Game 73, Mariners At Nationals

Fister vs Hernandez, 4:05 pm.

It took all of three games for Dustin Ackley to move up in the line-up. He’s not in the two spot that he was born for just yet, but I’d imagine it won’t take very long at this point. Also, Kennedy plays third again tonight, so it seems like Wedge is probably going to go with something close to a straight platoon at third base, with Kennedy getting most of the starts against right-handers. Chone Figgins is now a very expensive guy who will start twice a week.

Ichiro, RF
Ryan, SS
Kennedy, 3B
Smoak, 1B
Ackley, 2B
Peguero, LF
Gutierrez, CF
Gimenez, C
Fister, P

    What a crock of shit.

Fister goes out and throws a hell of a game, and this is how he gets repaid?

Good god, and the nationals to boot? THEY SUCK.

Sorry, Mr Nostalgia, but this is the type of loss that started the last big slide the M’s had…enjoyed it while it lasted.

I was going to go to bed after the game. But now I feel obligated to play Call of Duty and take my rage out on some nubes. Totally disgusting.

  10. lalo on June 21st, 2011 7:24 pm

Pineda and Bedard for the next two games, don´t worry…

  11. MrZDevotee on June 21st, 2011 7:25 pm

What a tease of a half hour… I really think it IS my fault, ’cause as I was watching the Texas Gameday and our game on Root, I had already said to myself “I can’t believe we’re in first place.”

    And then, almost instantly…

We’re not. And Texas ties there game.

Not funny, whoever is doing this. NOT funny.

No this is my fault, something told me that we were going to blow it before the inning even started. Fuck me and my blasphemic thought’s!!!!!

I left the game, 5-1 in the Ninth, and come back.. urgh. Just in time to see a… can’t talk about it, going into post-what-the-heck-just-happened-the-Mariners-fail shock (you would’ve thougt I’d of grown immune over the last few years…).

I NEVER feel comfortable when League comes in. Even with a 4 run lead. The problem I have with League is than he never throws anything above the thighs, so guys can just zero on that plane. That’s why you see lots of hard hit grounders off of him, and, for a closer who throws 98-99, not that many K’s (31 innings, 20 K’s). Usually you like lots of grounders, but for a closer, there are times when you need to dial up a strikeout, and if you throw 98-99, if you throw it at the top of the zone, guys aren’t going to get on top of it, especially if you’ve been mostly throwing at the bottom of the zone. I’d like to see League throw some two-strike high fastballs and get guys to swing and miss, but you never see that. It seems he’s incapable of throwing a high strike.

I had the exact same picture in my mind, walkoff HR.

I went to mow the lawn and we were up 5-1, what in the hell happened?

  19. msfanmike on June 21st, 2011 7:39 pm

Good luck figuring out this crazy game. The Baseball Gods owe us one … and they owe Fister a few more than that.

  20. Ibuprofen on June 21st, 2011 7:42 pm

    Fister – 99 pitches

Just saw this. Who in their right mind pulls a pitcher who’s dominating going into the 9th when they’ve pitched less than 100 pitches?

  21. MrZDevotee on June 21st, 2011 7:51 pm

    AND…

It’s ALSO my fault because Wedge must have read these blogs and saw where I wrote, TWO different times, that we can’t contend, because all of our starters are gonna be too tired at the end of year, for going so deep into games–

So… It IS my fault that he took Fister out… He does basically whatever I say. (Crap)

(Ask my wife, I think EVERYTHING is ultimately somehow about me.)

  22. lalo on June 21st, 2011 7:52 pm

Pineda will go after him (Wilson Ramos) tomorrow, it calms me down…

Just kidding, but i´m pretty angry

  23. jase411 on June 21st, 2011 8:30 pm

Texas just won, as if no one saw that coming..

  24. groundzero55 on June 21st, 2011 8:36 pm

Quit blaming Pauley…every pitcher has some bad outings and he has been lights out for us.

  25. jryoung222 on June 21st, 2011 8:44 pm

One other thing – I was reading posts over at Lookout Landing, and lots of guys were saying League was unlucky because the grounders weren’t turned into outs. So, why then isn’t the double play he got “lucky”? I’d say he was equally lucky and unlucky, so basically I think what happened to him was about what should have happened, particularly since he got no strikeouts and walked a guy. The point is, if you give up lots of grounders, which League does, a certain percentage of those are going to get through, and a certain (low) percentage will be booted. There’s no chance of a strikeout being a hit or an error, which is why you like your closer to have an inning:strikeout ratio something close to 1:1. League’s is more than 1.5:1. League isn’t “unlucky” when 2-3 grounders get through in an inning and he pukes up the game – it’s just the odds showing up based on the type of pitcher he is. When you rely on grounders as your out-getters, the odds say a certain percentage of the games you’re in are going to end up the way they did tonight and in Baltimore earlier this year, because he doesn’t many get fly balls and he doesn’t get enough strikeouts. I think if we can just realize that League is probably going to blow 3-4 more saves this year (I know this wasn’t a BS), and set our expectations accordingly, we’ll be able to better deal with games like this.

Painful day…Was tracking the score at work and I tuned in at the very end just to see the celebration. Ugh.

Seems like especially a tough one for Smoak. He cost us a run by being unfairly doubled up in the first inning. Then he wound up costing us the game by botching the fairly routine ball in 9th.

Let’s hope that we can easily take the next two games and regain some ground.

  27. groundzero55 on June 21st, 2011 9:38 pm

Just saw this. Who in their right mind pulls a pitcher who’s dominating going into the 9th when they’ve pitched less than 100 pitches?

And if Fister had gone out and then blown the game, it would have been “He was almost at a hundred pitches, why take the chance, should have gone to the bullpen.”

    Keep second guessing.

  28. TherzAlwaysHope on June 21st, 2011 10:12 pm

Remember, the first two batters League faced he pitched well enough to be 2outs: Smoak error. The 2-2 pitch to Bernadina was a 98mph fb that caught the corner. No call.

Of course, there was the blown call against Smoak earlier when he was called out at 3rd. I watched that again a couple of times on DVR. The ump had his back turned to Smoak (of course) watching the foul ball being caught. I think the ump was confused. My guess is that he thought Smoak had not tagged up and that the throw had beaten him back to the bag. It did. BUT we know that he did tag up turning the play into tagout play.

My guess is that his fellow umps knew he had screwed up, but they were not asked for help.

And about taking Fister out? Probably a good call considering the heat and humidity Fister had pitched in.

  29. KiWiNiNjA on June 22nd, 2011 12:45 am

    Poor Fister.

Came home to see gameday at 5-2, and I mistakenly thought the game was over. If only I hadn’t looked I could have saved myself some heartache.

    🙁

  30. MrZDevotee on June 22nd, 2011 1:48 am

Big question now– who’s our closer? I read that Brandon League was walking with a noticeable limp after the game, and in his own words he expects it to be worse tomorrow…

It’s just a muscle bruise, which is good (they didn’t even order xrays), but he also said he couldn’t push off the hurting ankle, that he was basically “falling towards home plate” on the few practice pitches he threw before taking himself out of the game.

    Dammit. Dammit. Dammit.

  31. samregens on June 22nd, 2011 4:49 am

Big question now– who’s our closer?

Good question indeed. If League can’t pitch, normally it would be Pauley, but he’s probably pretty scarred badly for now, and it can’t be Wright, so *gulp* maybe it’s Ray.

However, scars or not, it will probably be Pauley (this time warmed up!) if League can’t do it.

And I’m very worried about Ichiro who was also reported to have a painful leg contusion. The man is incredibly tough so I think he will be out there tomorrow, but if not, it’s a crying shame because he was heating up very nicely.

  32. plyka on June 22nd, 2011 7:19 am

This game is just a simple abberation, i wouldn’t put too much thought into it after that. Over 162 game season, you’re going to have some incredible outcomes. Beleive me, if you played 1000 games, you’d probably see a team come back from down 15-0 to win. The higher the sampe size, eventually you’ll get games like yesterday.

The question is, can the manager get through to the players that this was just a F it, forget about it, game?
