Vargas vs Moseley, 7:10 pm.

Dustin Ackley is not in the line-up tonight due to bruised ribs, but apparently he’ll be back in the line-up tomorrow. Still, that makes tonight’s game about 99% less interesting.

Ryan, SS
Kennedy, 2B
Smoak, 1B
Cust, DH
Peguero, LF
Gutierrez, CF
Bard, C
Figgins, 3B

I got comments allowed for this game. You’re welcome.

  2. Ibuprofen on July 1st, 2011 6:43 pm

Okay folks, we got our comments back. Let’s not be posting death threats/wishes no matter how poorly a player does, that’s just messed up.

Thanks for giving us another chance Dave, the discussions I have with this little community here really enhance the game experience for me. I think I learn something new about the sport every night in the comments so I’ve been missing the game threads.

  3. Dustbust on July 1st, 2011 6:45 pm

Oh no! “F-Word” is back in the lineup, and The Prodigy is injured. This would be an excellent day for Smoak to break out of his slump. Smoak Bomb!

Please, Lord, tell me I’m not wasting one of the few beautiful days in Seattle watching weak infield grounders.

  4. texasmarinerfan on July 1st, 2011 7:05 pm

Dave, thanks for turning comments back on. You did the right thing with turning them off, then turning them back on. I really like the comments because it’s a great place to discuss Mariners baseball with fellow Mariners fans.

Let’s hope for the the Fire alarm tonight. (Justin Smoak getting hot)

  5. Ibuprofen on July 1st, 2011 7:11 pm

I like the 80s uniforms better than our current bland white/gray/navy blue ones.

  6. bookbook on July 1st, 2011 7:11 pm

Is it just me, or is Carp not getting a chance to try and establish himself? It almost feels like they brought him up and buried him on the bench so he’d stop embarrassing the Major league roster by OPSing as much as three ML starters combined.

  7. Dustbust on July 1st, 2011 7:17 pm

I’ve wondered that about Carp! Why even bring him up if he’s going to sit on the bench? He’s played OK in a limited role..but he’s not going to get hot (again) riding the pine.

At this point I don’t care who they DH the rest of the year; just pick a guy and stick with him!

    IWearMsHats-
Let’s wait to see how the commenting goes before we award you a medal! *laugh*

And Ibuprofen– um, the uniforms? Really? (Although I do dig the tri-color stripes on the sleeves). I think I’m just averse to these uniforms based on remembering how we played in them.

  9. sexymarinersfan on July 1st, 2011 7:23 pm

Senator!!!!! Does it again! Lovin’ Adam Kennedy!

I think I’m just getting tired of seeing the same uniform style year after year haha. Maybe if we switch it up we’ll play better <_<

  11. texasmarinerfan on July 1st, 2011 7:28 pm

The throwback uniforms definately work for Brendan Ryan.

  13. MrZDevotee on July 1st, 2011 7:29 pm

I think it’s a shame if none of our pitchers throw a spitball tonight– these uni’s scream “Gaylord Perry” to my memory.

  14. IwearMsHats on July 1st, 2011 7:34 pm

I was thinking that exact thing and wondering if the Umps would allow it.

  15. juneau_fan on July 1st, 2011 7:34 pm

I love when they’ll say, ‘what an awful injury,’ and then the crew immediately replays it.

  16. Ibuprofen on July 1st, 2011 7:37 pm

Why isn’t Halman playing on an everyday basis? Seems like we might be squandering any advances he’s made by playing Peggy all the time instead.

  17. SODOMOJO360 on July 1st, 2011 7:37 pm

Seager at SS tonight but natural position is 2B and has played 3B lately too, Nick Franklin should be up by 2013. Trade Seager for a LF or 3B?

  18. SODOMOJO360 on July 1st, 2011 7:39 pm

Why isn’t Halman playing on an everyday basis? Seems like we might be squandering any advances he’s made by playing Peggy all the time instead.

Agree, Halman has much more potential. Better defense and speed but needs more AB’s

  19. Ibuprofen on July 1st, 2011 7:39 pm

Trade Seager for a LF or 3B?

Attempt to mold Seager into a 3B/super utility player.

How ’bout Lenny Randle trying to blow a ball foul circa 1981..!

  21. MrZDevotee on July 1st, 2011 7:47 pm

    bostock-
I STILL don’t know why they didn’t allow that to be a foul ball– classic baseball moment, it’s on all those 70s and 80s blooper reels…

  22. sexymarinersfan on July 1st, 2011 7:48 pm

Holy crap! Something good happened after Figgin’s hit the ball! What’s going on?!

  23. MrZDevotee on July 1st, 2011 7:53 pm

Brendan Ryan doing his part for the “throwback” game by looking like a cross between Gorman Thomas and Spike Owen.

  24. texasmarinerfan on July 1st, 2011 7:55 pm

And that boys and girls is called a hit and run.

  25. Edgar4Hall on July 1st, 2011 7:56 pm

I just tuned in and forgot about the throwback night but these Unis are Amazing!!!! Its nice to come in when we have a lead and look awesome while doing it.

Also Dave thanks for giving us this responsibiity back. I think that we sometimes forget that event though we comment on here this is YOUR website as well as your name on the title of it. We should remember that and not try to do something that can tarnish what a great educational tool that you have set up for us.

  26. OffensivelyChallenged on July 1st, 2011 7:58 pm

So stupid Ryan. What are you thinking?

  27. Ibuprofen on July 1st, 2011 7:59 pm

Perfect time for Smoak to break out of this funk he’s in.

  28. Ibuprofen on July 1st, 2011 8:06 pm

    The Jack Cust Special!

  29. MrZDevotee on July 1st, 2011 8:06 pm

Custard… Doing his thing. Scratch up another one… (And I’m NOT complaining)

  30. MrZDevotee on July 1st, 2011 8:07 pm

Let me be the only guy who will compliment a nice at bat by Peguero. Good job, kid!

  31. megatunnage on July 1st, 2011 8:07 pm

Jack Cust, doing what he does best w/the bases loaded. Lol.

  32. Ibuprofen on July 1st, 2011 8:07 pm

Good job by Peggy jumping on that pitch.

  33. Breadbaker on July 1st, 2011 8:08 pm

    Dear Mr. Rizzs,

That’s a trident, not a pitchfork. Tridents are associated with Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. The Mariners are a team associated with the sea. That is why they used a trident.

    Thanks.

  34. OffensivelyChallenged on July 1st, 2011 8:08 pm

I think I’d honestly like to see Halman start in CF. Guti looks horrible at the plate this year. Way to go Peggy.

  35. Edgar4Hall on July 1st, 2011 8:08 pm

Think that is Peguero ever learns to be a disciplined hitter (I know, I chuckled when I wrote it too) think he will have to register his swing as a lethal weapon?

  36. MrZDevotee on July 1st, 2011 8:08 pm

(tip of the cap to Ibuprofen- on Peggy’s behalf)

  37. sexymarinersfan on July 1st, 2011 8:09 pm

I find it ironic that Figgins lead off that inning.

  38. MrZDevotee on July 1st, 2011 8:10 pm

    Edgar-
I know he won’t be able to carry his bat onto an airplane. Fer sure. And he’ll have to carry a permit everywhere else.

  39. Westside guy on July 1st, 2011 8:17 pm

Wow! Coming in late, Mariners are leading the hated Padres, and comments are on!

BTW I love Blowers comment – “I love that Peguero was aggressive” followed by a qualifier about the situation. Like Peggy is EVER not aggressive.

    And yay Figgins!

  40. sexymarinersfan on July 1st, 2011 8:17 pm

OMG! I just had De javu!!

  41. ndrfx on July 1st, 2011 8:17 pm

    WHAT JUST HAPPENED!?

…and he almost just gave it away.

  42. sexymarinersfan on July 1st, 2011 8:18 pm

    I like it!

  43. Breadbaker on July 1st, 2011 8:18 pm

Per the spray charts we’ve seen, that was exactly the sort of hit–over the infield–that Figgins hit as an Angel and has rarely hit as a Mariner.

  44. Westside guy on July 1st, 2011 8:20 pm

I swear that uniform is two sizes too big for Chone- he looks like a little leaguer standing out there.

And Ryan’s stache matches the retro theme perfectly.

  45. Edgar4Hall on July 1st, 2011 8:21 pm

Westy the Unis look big even on Peggy

  46. MrZDevotee on July 1st, 2011 8:23 pm

    Westy-
You missed the picture of the Michael Jackson “Thriller” cover with Ichiro’s face superimposed over Michael Jackson’s… Instant Classic!

  47. IwearMsHats on July 1st, 2011 8:25 pm

Figgins is looking good tonight! This is exactly what the M’s need. Instead of hoping figgins dies, let’s hope he improves eh? Sound reasonable???

  48. bostock4ever on July 1st, 2011 8:25 pm

Really want to see Ichiro get his 200 hits for 2011 …think he’s tied with Rose for 10 consecutive 200 hit seasons.
92 thru 81 games get HOT Ichiro!

Pretty safe to assume Figgins would play better ANY year than 2011. We just need more “Turn Back the Clock” games.

Rizzo saw his life flash before his eyes… And Peggy barrelling down the basepath.

  59. sexymarinersfan on July 1st, 2011 8:34 pm

I wish Peguero would’ve bowled Rizzo over!

  60. Ibuprofen on July 1st, 2011 8:36 pm

You know, if Peggy never learns any plate discipline we could probably send him across the street to be a linebacker.

  61. Paul B on July 1st, 2011 8:38 pm

Even though Vargas has pitched a little better at home, he actually has a lower ERA on the road than at Safeco this year.

I was thinking of that during the trade Pineda discussion. If I was a team that wanted to win in 2011, I think I’d rather have Vargas than a Pineda who probably won’t pitch all that many more innings anyway.

    Peguero is a cartoon ballplayer.

  65. texasmarinerfan on July 1st, 2011 8:44 pm

Peguero with plate discipline and better fielding could become a legit power source, I’m not kidding.

  66. juneau_fan on July 1st, 2011 8:44 pm

Wow, Vargas has really fat calves. Not a good look for you, Jason.

  67. texasmarinerfan on July 1st, 2011 8:46 pm

  68. Paul B on July 1st, 2011 8:48 pm

Peguero with plate discipline and better fielding could become a legit power source, I’m not kidding.

I’m not too clear on what his fielding has to do with power, but, yes, if he had better plate discipline he would be a potential major leaguer.

  69. Paul B on July 1st, 2011 8:51 pm

5 K 0 BB for Vargas. A very nice start.

  70. MarinerFanMike03 on July 1st, 2011 8:54 pm

This game has been fun to watch. Especially listening to the guys in the booth. Bone, Blowers and Simms are really good together.

  71. MrZDevotee on July 1st, 2011 8:54 pm

    Paul B-
I’m not too good on definitions, but I think Peguero is actually already a real “major leaguer”.

The Senator passing bills like crazy! (I don’t know what that means, sorry)

  74. Ibuprofen on July 1st, 2011 8:56 pm

Gah! Stop scoring, you’ll use up all the runs that you have for the entire series!

  75. Westside guy on July 1st, 2011 8:56 pm

Wow the Mariners (like most AL teams, I guess) really enjoy playing most NL teams.

Really want to see Ichiro get his 200 hits for 2011 …think he’s tied with Rose for 10 consecutive 200 hit seasons.

I’m actually pretty sure that the consecutive record is 9, and he’s tied for it. Pete Rose has 10 total seasons with 200+ in his career, not consecutive. So if Ichiro gets to 200, he’ll have the consecutive record and be tied for all time number of seasons.

  79. juneau_fan on July 1st, 2011 9:00 pm

That’s your future, gents. Sitting in the stands, next to your lady love, wearing a matching hot pink windbreaker. And picking your nose on regional TV.

I’m worried about all this scoring too. Wouldn’t want it to catch on.

  80. Auggeydog on July 1st, 2011 9:00 pm

How could you not like these uni’s they are great. When they are next to the Padre’s uni’s they look even better. That said, if they score like this with them on, let them wear them all the time.

Did anyone catch when they were showing Sim’s in the 80′s and Bones said his hair looked like a cul-de-sac? That was some funny stuff

  81. MrZDevotee on July 1st, 2011 9:01 pm

    Westy-
    Damn.. How ’bout…

The Senator sending that ball on a golf junket to the right field corner, courtesy the Tabacco industry (ie, the wad of chew he always has in him mouth)

(Thanks, I like that one better…)

Yeah! My wife and I cried laughing.

  87. sexymarinersfan on July 1st, 2011 9:04 pm

I think Kennedy might be wearing “The Miracle Ear!” Wasn’t that invented in the ’80s? I loved the “Cul de sac” expression!

  88. texasmarinerfan on July 1st, 2011 9:05 pm

    Paul B

If Peguero does both of those things he could be a good everyday left fielder.

  89. Westside guy on July 1st, 2011 9:05 pm

Man the fans are really into this! I love the kid in the right field stands who’s wearing “Rock-n-Rollen” hair.

Wow, you guys were right – That shirt IS big even on Peggy!

  91. Auggeydog on July 1st, 2011 9:07 pm

Cust walk up music should be, “these boots are made for Walking”.

  92. Westside guy on July 1st, 2011 9:08 pm

Hehe Auggey – although I’m pretty sure that song is from the 60s. But that would be hilarious!

  93. henryv on July 1st, 2011 9:09 pm

I’m thinking that the M’s should follow the mid 90′s Chargers, and go back to the retro uniforms, and stay with them.

The Chargers rode theirs all the way to the Super Bowl.

  94. henryv on July 1st, 2011 9:10 pm

Guti is looking like Beltre minus the contact and power.

  95. henryv on July 1st, 2011 9:12 pm

Jack Cust “digging for third” really looks like a fat softball player jogging as hard as he can.

Figgys has looked better this game, but thanks for reminding us why we dislike you a whole bunch.

  100. Auggeydog on July 1st, 2011 9:17 pm

    Mr Z

That would be good too, but I was thinking all the time. Walk this way would probably be a better one for every game. Anyone know the sound guy, we could give him that track and play it until Cust compalins.

  101. henryv on July 1st, 2011 9:17 pm

Ryan could have put a little more on that, and he knew it.

I love Ryan so much. He gets pissed when he doesn’t perform perfectly.

  102. Westside guy on July 1st, 2011 9:18 pm

Or, for the fifties, Cust could use Patsy Kline’s “Walkin’ after Midnight”.

Now we need to cover the 70s and the 90s…

  103. MrZDevotee on July 1st, 2011 9:18 pm

    RE: Cust-

I REALLY wanna see a “throwback” Jack Cust, sitting in the dugout in one of those old school, interwoven polyester/aluminum frame lawnchairs, next to an old green, metal Coleman cooler, poppin’ cold ones between innings (REAL aluminum pull tabs on the cans, that come all the way off!)… Straight out of a 1980′s softball tournament.

  104. henryv on July 1st, 2011 9:19 pm

    83 MPH high and inside.

Change up? Didn’t really have any apparent movement. Does Vargas have a slider?

  105. henryv on July 1st, 2011 9:20 pm

Now we need to cover the 70s and the 90s…

    Bad Religion’s “A Walk” for the 90′s.

  106. Auggeydog on July 1st, 2011 9:21 pm

    90′s walk like an egyptian
    70′s walk of life

  107. nvn8vbryce on July 1st, 2011 9:21 pm

I think that Fats Domino – “I’m Walkin’” would be better for Mr. Cust…

  108. MrZDevotee on July 1st, 2011 9:22 pm

Cust’s ’60s song could also be, “Walk Don’t Run” by local faves The Ventures (first surf song to ever crack the Top 40).

You kow the guy who invented the pop top on beer and pop cans lived in Medina until he was killed in a plane crash about 10 years ago? Just a little trivia to make you a bit smarter.

hehehehe I am loving all of these ideas…

    Also, Vargas is a stud.

  111. nvn8vbryce on July 1st, 2011 9:24 pm

MrZ – I was also thinking that Walk Away Renee would work too…

  112. Westside guy on July 1st, 2011 9:25 pm

    90’s walk like an egyptian

It would be GREAT to see him doing the whole hand thing on his way to first…

  116. sexymarinersfan on July 1st, 2011 9:26 pm

I’m pretty sure “Walk Like an Egyptian” was from the 80′s.

Could Cust wear the gold makeup and have the stone next to his eye? Maybe the pitcher would be laughing so hard and never be able to throw a strike.

I’m pretty sure “Walk Like an Egyptian” was from the 80’s.

    Was thinking the same thing.

    In fact, it was 1986.

I have mentioned that I am in love with Brenden Ryan, right?

  121. Auggeydog on July 1st, 2011 9:32 pm

Mr Z I might be able to top it. His second invention made him even more money. He invented the 1st cornea transplant. He sold it to Dow for millions and stock. From a pop top to a cornea transplant. When I worked construction (I was an ironworker/welder) I worked at his house 3 days tying up the rebar for retainig walls around his house on the water next to Jack Sikma. OH and he was a jack ass.

Tip of the hat to Denorfio for giving the bat to the fan.

Walking on the Moon by The Police came out in 1979

@IPL_Baseball: Helsin Martinez agrees to terms with the Seattle #Mariners for 2 million!

I heard he has ridiculous power, we´ll see!

  125. Westside guy on July 1st, 2011 9:33 pm

That was a classy move by Denorfio – AND a great jump by Ryan!

Tip of the hat to Denorfio for giving the bat to the fan.

After that robbery, he probably doesn’t want the bat any more. But, yeah, good for him giving it back.

Not sure where that 0-1 pitch was.

  127. henryv on July 1st, 2011 9:34 pm

    So close.

  128. henryv on July 1st, 2011 9:35 pm

Ryan is pissed that he didn’t make two incredible catches in one inning.

  129. nvn8vbryce on July 1st, 2011 9:35 pm

How about “Jumping Jack Flash?” as a theme for Cust?

  130. Ibuprofen on July 1st, 2011 9:36 pm

    DAMN VARGAS YOU SCARY

  131. Auggeydog on July 1st, 2011 9:36 pm

When I googled Walk like an Egyptian there was a rerelease or something like that in 1990.

I’ll take being pissed about that over making two boneheaded errors any day of the week!

I like the high school football horn at the end of the win.

  134. Auggeydog on July 1st, 2011 9:38 pm

Vargas looked really good tonight, pitch placement is so important. Not the fastest, not the best stuff, but the ball in the right place both sides of the plate.

  135. Westside guy on July 1st, 2011 9:39 pm

Hey I just realized RoJo wasn’t catching for our hated rivals.

  136. Ibuprofen on July 1st, 2011 9:39 pm

Cust’s walk up music must now be the Oompa Loompa song <_<

  137. nvn8vbryce on July 1st, 2011 9:40 pm

Nice job, Jason! I think that the theme of the game for Mr. Vargas was “Gettin Jiggy Wit’ It!”

  138. Auggeydog on July 1st, 2011 9:41 pm

IBU’s got it oomps loomps loopity doo

LOVED the oompa loompa reference by him there.

Seems like someone would mention to him that Babe Ruth wore a loose uniform. And that Babe Ruth was fat. And that he’s a little chunky. And that Babe Ruth hit home runs. And that he used to hit home runs. And maybe then he’ll get it.

  141. Auggeydog on July 1st, 2011 9:44 pm

Maybe if we trade all 5 of our pitchers Peguero Figgy and Carp for their 5 a LF a 3rd bm a C and a DH would that work? Maybe we throw in walking man too.
Hey we could have a big party in the woods were women are topless and call it walking man. In place of running man, and Cust could be the star attraction.

Hey, ‘Hatari’ is a fun movie!

In all honesty by next year, how good could Vargas be? he keeps getting better! 3 Shutouts this half of a year!!

  144. frontstreetfan on July 2nd, 2011 7:57 am

We were first Row just behind first base and noticed the left ear medical bandage Kennedy had what appeared to be a cut bandage inside his left ear. Good guy gave autographs to the kids just before game time. Solid pro.
Smoak looked pretty good at the plate but man does he have some wheel problems? I’ve got to believe he’s got a problem with a knee? Ludwick made a nice catch off Peggy tonight. If we could get him cheap he’d be a nice addition. Cheap is pick up his salary and a B prospect.

You want a walk up 90′s song for Cust? How about Walking Contradiction by Green Day? Fits him perfectly.
