Fister vs. Weaver
Kyle Seager’s first game in an M’s uniform is a divisional clash against arguably the best pitcher in the American League. The M’s did beat Weaver back on May 18th behind a Jason Vargas shutout, but Weaver responded with a complete game shutout of his own on June 14th.
M’s line-up:
1: Ichiro
2: Ryan
3: Kennedy (1B)
4: Smoak (DH)
5: Ackley
6: Olivo
7: Seager (3B)
8: Gutierrez
9: Peguero

Yeah, but realize that about half the stadiums favor left-handed hitters and half favor right-handed hitters. So, you have and “advantage” in 75% of the stadiums that you play in.
Which is also why the M’s have so many left-handed fly ball pitchers.
And the Boston Red Sox had so much success with Adrian Beltre, and we thought he was terrible.
M’s Homers-
At Home:
RH – 8
LH – 24
Away:
RH – 10
LH – 12
The Mariners play 81 games at Safeco. The most the Mariners play at any one other stadium is 8 (I think). Think about it… Why woulnt a team build around the only constant in the game–the home field.
Beltre in 2010:
Home HR’s – 13
Away HR’s – 15
What might be slightly more interesting is Home Runs per at-bat.
But, yeah, pretty much what one would expect. Balanced power away, and LHB power at home.
Look at his BABIP. It’s not so much about home runs as hits that he put up. It is hard to hit them over the green monster, but it is much easier to hit into it.
Beltre’s BABIP in Safeco 2009: .296
Fenway: .336
Krueger’s Keys to the Game should be sponsored by Grecian Formula, apparently.
Because I don’t see it as an advantage. M’s have scored the exact same amount of runs at home as they have away but with 9 fewer road games.
Their team AVG and team Slg% is worse at home as well. So we overload from one side to play better at home and the numbers there are actually worse than on the road. Because of the ‘left-handed’ advantage at home we get the luxury of seeing guys like Peguero and Cust more because simply the left-handed theory. That is when you let the park dictate the player instead of letting the player dictate the lineup. Can you explain any other reason for those two still on the team?
Beltre’s OPS on fly balls in 2009: .618
OPS on fly balls in 2010: 1.159
Sorry, I thought your point was that Beltre played better because of Fenway last year which is obvious that Fenway plays better than Safeco for an offensive player, but doesn’t explain why he hit better on the road last year versus why he didn’t hit on the road that well when with M’s.
Cust: Because he has the 3rd highest OPS on the team.
Peguero: No.
Almost every team scores less runs in Safeco.
Seattle had an 11% home field advantage last year. That’s 8th best in MLB.
Last year it had the 2nd biggest park factor.
Safeco might be 2nd best player at the moment.
I agree with that when you compare him to what we have which is not much. I like to compare him to what other teams have at DH which in that case we need him gone and someone else in.
In AL he is 11th out of 14 DH’s (at least 200 AB’s) in OPS.
In the meantime, and until you get a better batter in, you really should play him and not inferior batters. (That’s not hard to understand, right?)
Another bad night for Peguero. I’m sick of hearing people complain about him, but I agree with them more every day. I might rather see Saunders get another chance. Hell, let’s give Blowers a chance.
It seems Peguero will have to go hitless this whole series to get sent down and every time he hits a HR he buys himself another week or two.
I still hold out hope for Saunders (call me a cockeyed optimist) – but he needs to spend the rest of the year down in AAA with the instructions “focus exclusively on that getting that new swing down”. Or maybe he can, as Dave suggested, be part of a deal for a MLB-ready left fielder – that might be best for both the Mariners and for Condor.
At this point I think our best in-house shot is to bring up Langerhans – we just don’t seem to have anyone else (the shine is rapidly wearing off Halman).
Hey, Rickey Henderson might still be looking to play…
And now for something completely different…
The Angels have called up Mike Trout! I’m hoping we get to see him (you know, other than on the bench).
No, absolutely not. Especially on a hot day when a breeze is needed.
Insanity.
