Beavan v Beckett.

Mariners have the worst team AVG vs. RHP. The Red Sox have the best (.224 v .277)
Mariners have the worst team OBP vs. RHP. The Red Sox have the best (.289 v .353)
Mariners have the worst team SLG vs. RHP. The Red Sox have the best (.331 v .455)

Or, if you like your stats Fangraph style, wOBA — .276 to .354.
On the other hand, it’s a beautiful day here and the National Weather Service forecast for Boston is

Isolated showers and thunderstorms before 9pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Partly cloudy, with a low around 74. West wind between 7 and 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Heh.

Heading to my 20-year reunion in Tacoma, hopefully can catch a couple innings of the game on the drive there.

Gahh. This losing streak thing has to end for us soon.

And this trade deadline thing has to start for us soon.

    Go get ‘em, Blake.

  3. wilchiro on July 23rd, 2011 3:41 pm

Miguel Olivo collects two hits, and sits again. Justin Smoak has a .300 OPS in the last month and he’s batting clean-up.

Clearly, Eric Wedge is trying to lose.

  4. G-Man on July 23rd, 2011 3:49 pm

I think Wedge is catching Bard for Beavan’s sake.

a bunch of other guys you never heard of

Heh, I was going to peruse some of the Sox sites to see what kind of derision they might be heaping on the Mariners. Richly deserved, of course.

  5. Westside guy on July 23rd, 2011 4:17 pm

Miguel Olivo collects two hits, and sits again. Justin Smoak has a .300 OPS in the last month and he’s batting clean-up.

Olivo’s OPS over the last 30 days is .490 – he’s not exactly tearing it up. Bard’s been hitting better than Miguel over that time frame.

And thank you for making me look at the Mariners’ individual stats for the past month – now my eyes are bleeding. Oh, man, these guys are awful.

What on earth is wrong with Smoak? He’s hitting for basically no power, and his BABIP is absurdly low for even a slow guy like him. Maybe he needs to go on the DL to get that thumb issue taken care of – he’s not helping the team, and it’s not like we’re in a race for a playoff spot.

  6. msfanmike on July 23rd, 2011 4:29 pm

Maybe he needs to go on the DL to get that thumb issue taken care

You could be correct, Westy … but it might be a clear violation of the “toughness” rule and therefore, verboten.

Smoak has been pretty awful for 10+ weeks now, but at this point – any excuse would do.

  7. msfanmike on July 23rd, 2011 4:57 pm

Nice play Guti … that’s why we love you!

    Now please start hitting.

  8. xsacred24x on July 23rd, 2011 5:16 pm

Smoak is our future he has to play everyday and the sad part is there is nobody to replace him with unless you want to see Figgins play 3rd and Kennedy play 1st i certainly don’t keep Smoak out there please.

  9. pgreyy on July 23rd, 2011 5:55 pm

That inning was some weak sauce right there.

  10. Swungonandbelted on July 23rd, 2011 5:55 pm

And yet another opportunity goes to waste…

  11. CYK on July 23rd, 2011 5:57 pm

    Yuck–boys versus men.

  12. pgreyy on July 23rd, 2011 5:59 pm

…and, that said…Beavan deserves a couple of runs in support.

Hell, we ALL deserve a couple of runs…

  13. pgreyy on July 23rd, 2011 6:01 pm

OK, when I said that, I meant “we ALL” as in Mariners fans.

…didn’t mean to include the other team, there.

  14. stevemotivateir on July 23rd, 2011 6:07 pm

I’d like to see Smoak sit for a game or two with Carp at 1st. I’m not worried about Smoak, yet, but I think a break would do him good. Would like to see Ackley hitting 2nd.

  15. Swungonandbelted on July 23rd, 2011 6:07 pm

    FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. pgreyy on July 23rd, 2011 6:07 pm

    FISH STRIKE!!!

  17. stevemotivateir on July 23rd, 2011 6:08 pm

For the record, I wrote that before the home run.

  18. lalo on July 23rd, 2011 6:10 pm

    Last 3 years = 1 HR
    Last 2 games = 2 HR

  19. samregens on July 23rd, 2011 6:11 pm

Why the heck Wedge (or JZ??) insist on using Peguero while we were still contending I will never know.

Carp (or anybody) has a much better approach to hitting than Peguero.

  20. stevemotivateir on July 23rd, 2011 6:19 pm

Is it just me, or does it seem like Ichiro has been swinging for the fences a lot more this year? Wonder if he was asked to do that, or if he’s trying to carry more weight on his shoulders. Curious to know how many fly-outs he has this year compared to previous years.

  21. Westside guy on July 23rd, 2011 6:22 pm

    Hello, Brendan.

  22. Swungonandbelted on July 23rd, 2011 6:22 pm

Is it just me, or does it seem like Ichiro has been swinging for the fences a lot more this year?

I’d bet it has as much to do with him not being able to beat out the slap infield hits this year as anything…

  23. Westside guy on July 23rd, 2011 6:24 pm

The Red Sox manager looks like Father Mulcahey from MASH.

  24. stevemotivateir on July 23rd, 2011 6:24 pm

Yeah, I wouldn’t rule that out as a reason for it.

  25. Swungonandbelted on July 23rd, 2011 6:39 pm

    Well hell……

  26. pgreyy on July 23rd, 2011 6:39 pm

    We can’t have nice things.

  27. lalo on July 23rd, 2011 6:40 pm

Good job Beavan, but your team is awful…

  28. Ibuprofen on July 23rd, 2011 6:42 pm

Dammit Wedge. Learn to pull your starter before it’s too late.

  29. Westside guy on July 23rd, 2011 6:48 pm

    Crap.

  30. KiWiNiNjA on July 23rd, 2011 6:49 pm

    Wedge is an idiot.

  31. neo-realist on July 23rd, 2011 6:54 pm

I second that–Beavan did a fine job keeping the Mariners in this game and he’s been solid ever since they brought him up from AAA.

  32. pgreyy on July 23rd, 2011 6:59 pm

Bad bunt…lucky break. We’ll take whatever we can get!

  33. Westside guy on July 23rd, 2011 7:00 pm

Good time for a walk, Cust.

  34. lalo on July 23rd, 2011 7:03 pm

    Release Cust, he´s an idiot…

  35. pgreyy on July 23rd, 2011 7:04 pm

    Bases loaded, nobody out. Nothing.

    NOTHING!

  36. lalo on July 23rd, 2011 7:04 pm

    I hate the M´s!!

  37. NateTheGreat on July 23rd, 2011 7:05 pm

Cust is truly worthless but so is everyone else pretty much.

  38. r-gordon-7 on July 23rd, 2011 7:05 pm

Bases loaded, no outs – no score. Expectation met.

  39. pgreyy on July 23rd, 2011 7:05 pm

Should they have sent the runner on the flyout to shallow center?

My wife says they need to be more aggressive…I think it was pretty shallow, but I was surprised to NOT see him giving it a shot–at least forcing a throw. (The ball was casually thrown in…)

    Your thoughts?

  40. Ibuprofen on July 23rd, 2011 7:05 pm

    Over/Under: 100.9 losses this season?

    Over tbqh

  41. KaminaAyato on July 23rd, 2011 7:06 pm

Isn’t your first priority at this point trying to tie the game? If so, why not ask Carp to squeeze bunt? Yes, we have to make the assumption that it works, but it scores a run, puts the tying run 90 feet away and you can even do it again to get the tying run in. With so few innings left and the offense generally unable to get a hit, why not try this approach?

  42. Westside guy on July 23rd, 2011 7:14 pm

Yes, Mike, because Olivo hacking at the plate has served him so well over the past couple of months.

  43. pgreyy on July 23rd, 2011 7:31 pm

    And so it goes.

  44. nvn8vbryce on July 23rd, 2011 7:37 pm

What’s the over / under on us losing 20 consecutive games?

  45. wilchiro on July 23rd, 2011 7:39 pm

I’m hoping Houston goes on a massive winning streak so we can get the #1 pick in the draft.

  46. lalo on July 23rd, 2011 7:47 pm

I’m hoping Houston goes on a massive winning streak so we can get the #1 pick in the draft.

And then we pick another pitcher…

  47. lalo on July 23rd, 2011 7:50 pm

We´re on pace for the fifth pick in the draft, i like it

  48. xsacred24x on July 23rd, 2011 8:18 pm

I hope the kids continue to devolop but we keep losing so we can acquire talent through the draft.

  49. Swungonandbelted on July 23rd, 2011 8:26 pm

What’s the over / under on us losing 20 consecutive games?

Hrm…one more in Boston, then 3 in NY, and then Tampa at home for 3….I wouldn’t bet the mortgage payment on them winning again in July…

I just hope this “record setting” losing streak doesn’t prompt How-Chuck into action and they end up starting to get the idea that this can be fixed by firing the GM…..

  50. FelixFanChris420 on July 23rd, 2011 8:40 pm

Someone should fire How-Chuck…not that it’ll matter, but it would make me feel better.

  51. lamlor on July 23rd, 2011 8:59 pm

Hate to bring up the stat, but we were 25-18 in games Peguero started. Just saying….. :)

  52. Westside guy on July 23rd, 2011 9:08 pm

Hate to bring up the stat, but we were 25-18 in games Peguero started. Just saying….. :)

Considering how lousy he played, that’s quite a testament to the other 9 guys (counting the pitcher).

Hmm… maybe playing so hard during that stretch flat wore them out, and THAT’S the problem now!

  53. henryv on July 23rd, 2011 9:50 pm

We´re on pace for the fifth first pick in the draft, i like it

    Fixed for late August.

  54. furlong on July 24th, 2011 7:40 am

Looks like Wedge is about to have a stroke in the Dugout. Time to call Frisco and get Riggelman back up here.

  55. Dutch on July 24th, 2011 8:24 am

At what point does Z feel a little pressure to make a big move? I don’t think he’ll pull anything stupid at the trade deadline, but will he overspend for a Prince Fielder in the offseason? Even ppl around USSM/LL are going to lose faith if we end this year with 90+ losses, and don’t improve next year.

I’m not saying I want him to sign the big FA, I’m just asking, at what point do concerns about his personal job security begin to weigh on his decisions?
