Game 102, Mariners at Yankees

DMZ · July 25, 2011 at 3:18 pm · Filed Under Mariners

4:05. Feels weird to put up a game thread today. Vargas versus Garcia! And Vargas gets

RF-L Ichiro!
SS-R Ryan
2B-L Ackley
C-R Olivo
3B-L Kennedy
DH-L Carp
1B-S Smoak
CF-R Gutierrez
LF-R Halman

Two back to back lefties! Nooooooooooooooooooo! And since so far I’m 100% for Olivo having good games when I doubt him, let me just try our luck: you stink Olivo! Don’t worry, he’s a professional, this stuff washes right off him.

He still shouldn’t be hitting #4.

SS-R Jeter
CF-L Granderson
1B-S Teixeira
2B-L Cano
DH-S Swisher
C-R Martin
RF-R Jones
3B-R Nunez
LF-L Gardner

So here’s where the isolation pod problem comes in. I gotta go look at the Yankee roster to figure out — wait, Andruw Jones? How.. I have to go read a transaction log. I will note that I still hate the Yankees, so I can’t be that far out of things.

While the circumstances that have brought you back are not ideal, it is awfully good to read you again.

  2. Westside guy on July 25th, 2011 3:29 pm

Would it be wrong of me to root for rain today?

  3. robbbbbb on July 25th, 2011 3:53 pm

Can we get Derek back *and* Dave writing regularly for USSM again? That’d make my year.

  4. groundzero55 on July 25th, 2011 3:59 pm

Anybody on the Mariners He still shouldn’t be hitting #4.

    Fixed.

  5. l3ird on July 25th, 2011 4:12 pm

Thanks Derek for stepping up again! USSM misses your awesome commentary!

  6. Rayvensdad on July 25th, 2011 4:14 pm

Only do the Yankees spend 1.2 Billion dollars to build a stadium, and not have anything to combat the rain that NY gets. Though I doubt anyone would want a roof over Yankee Stadium… I just hate rain delays!

  7. Breadbaker on July 25th, 2011 4:17 pm

Derek, I used to do that with Dan Wilson. I’d scream “you can’t hit, Wilson” and he’d double. These may have been his only doubles.

  8. Ichirolling51 on July 25th, 2011 4:27 pm

I’m from (Upstate) NY, and it has been storming here, pretty much every since noonish, so this could take a while. Which I guess isn’t a bad thing considering….Just hope the next couple days are like this too, with a tornado or two mixed in there as well. Anything that’ll help us avoid getting embarrassed. But who know’s we always seem to play the Yankees tough, as is the case with Boston.

Just our luck, I’m predicting the game starts late.. we shell Freddy for 7 runs in 2 2/3.. and the game gets called in the 4th.

Edit: Yeah, that’s right.. I just predicted the M’s offense actually beats up an opposing pitcher.

    I’ve also been drinking.

  11. Jokerman on July 25th, 2011 4:42 pm

Want to feel even more depressed about this season? If you subtract when the Mariners were at their best, and winning all the close games (lets call it April 26 through the end of May, a 20-11 record), they’re playing at a pace to lose 109 games. Ugh.

  12. jephdood on July 25th, 2011 4:46 pm

They should have gone for 116 losses. Probably wouldn’t hang a banner or honor the team 10 years from now for that tho.

  13. Dave Spiwak on July 25th, 2011 4:53 pm

At first I thought it was Rupert Jones in right. C’mon, Nunez at third, statues in right and short. This team is beatable!

  14. Jokerman on July 25th, 2011 4:59 pm

Who wants to bet as soon as they remove the “116 Wins” mini banner from the 2001 banner in Safeco they will the next four world series after 2011?

  15. Breadbaker on July 25th, 2011 6:13 pm

Seven minutes after the Mariners Facebook feed says the Yankees were taking the field, I turn on the game and the M’s are already in the field.

  16. Paul B on July 25th, 2011 6:13 pm

I pretty much don’t believe anything Baker says.

  17. Breadbaker on July 25th, 2011 6:15 pm

    Definitely Mr. Hyde Vargas tonight.

  18. G-Man on July 25th, 2011 6:20 pm

One of the things I’ll be watching for tonight is to see if Vargas pitches well enough to attract a little attention by the trade deadline.

    Not gonna happen, is it?

  19. texasmarinerfan on July 25th, 2011 6:23 pm

There goes the game. Stupid Yankees, always hitting homeruns.

  20. Paul B on July 25th, 2011 6:25 pm

I guess the ump made the out call because, hey, Jeter.

  21. G-Man on July 25th, 2011 6:25 pm

    Kennedy robbed by the umpire.

  22. Breadbaker on July 25th, 2011 6:25 pm

Apparently Mr. Jeter gets an extra foot on his throws courtesy of the men in blue.

  23. Breadbaker on July 25th, 2011 6:25 pm

I swear I clicked only once.

  25. Ichirolling51 on July 25th, 2011 6:33 pm

And Tex with a walk-off 1st inning HR!!!!!!

  26. Paul B on July 25th, 2011 6:36 pm

Smoak was patient, got a good pitch up, and drove it. Cool.

  27. Hammy57 on July 25th, 2011 6:36 pm

Smoak has been hitting more balls hard lately. Good to see.

  28. FelixFanChris420 on July 25th, 2011 6:39 pm

    1st and 3rd no out… over/under .9 runs scored?

  29. Hammy57 on July 25th, 2011 6:40 pm

Here comes the grounder to 2nd by Ichiro that results in double play.

  30. Hammy57 on July 25th, 2011 6:42 pm

What? A productive out? I haven’t seen one of those in a long time!

  31. FelixFanChris420 on July 25th, 2011 6:43 pm

Nope, sac fly…better find that “edit post” button :-)

  32. Ichirolling51 on July 25th, 2011 6:50 pm

    God I hate this team!!!!!

  33. sherdogg21 on July 25th, 2011 6:51 pm

ugh, Jeters lucky night. Pop fly HR and a 6-3 gift from the ump

When the answer to the trivia question is unveiled, Sims always intones “survey says…”

I think that is not the survey result, that is the real answer. When they unveil what the people texted, then he could say “survey says”.

OK, not important, just something I notice every game.

  35. Hammy57 on July 25th, 2011 6:52 pm

I don’t see how GM Jack Z keeps his job. No GM can have back to back seasons like this (if the Mariners keep this pace) and keep their job. Yes, he is a hell of a scouter of young talent, but something is to be said about 3 years into your gig and the team is still this bad. I personally hope they give him one more year, but I don’t see the higher ups doing that.

  36. Ibuprofen on July 25th, 2011 6:52 pm

Jeter’s lucky to end up with a double on that swing in any field that’s bigger than one you’d find at your typical high school.

  37. sherdogg21 on July 25th, 2011 6:57 pm

I dont know whats better watching Jeter lumber after routine groundouts, or watching Andrew Jones chunking his way after a “gapper”

  38. Hammy57 on July 25th, 2011 6:59 pm

Unfortunately I think this is true as well.

And isn’t it funny that HoChuck go through 10 GM’s and manage to have them ALL not be good enough? Almost as though the GMs and managers AREN’T the problem. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…

I just walked in the door, back from 12 days vacation. So I can’t be blamed for any of this.

I know I’m super late to the party, but my initial joy at seeing Derek post again immediately became sadness.

Whether the Mariners let you down for another 70 years, or finally build a trophy case, I wish you a speedy recovery, Dave. You’ve been instrumental to my thinking as a baseball fan in ways you probably can’t comprehend.

Also, thank goodness for Dustin Ackley.

    My sentiments exactly.

Without USS Mariner and LL, I don’t know that I could endure being an M’s fan. Or at least be as dedicated as I am.

Jay’s minor league info, Dave’s analysis, and Jeff and Matthew’s sense of humor really make these 100 loss seasons bearable.

  43. Paul B on July 25th, 2011 7:05 pm

    wait, Andruw Jones? How..

Yeah,I was thinking he’d retired a couple of years ago.

Some first base ump tonight. Is he wearing pinstripes?

  45. Paul B on July 25th, 2011 7:07 pm

    Well, that call sucked.

Actually, I sort of expect all close calls to be wrong.

  48. henryv on July 25th, 2011 7:09 pm

When I was delivering pizza (not that long ago) we had a guy who started working who was supposedly in his late 20s, however, he looked like he was 40.

He said he was delivering pizza because he has lost his job or gotten a pay cut at his other job. He never actually said what his old job was, other then that he worked for the government.

After a while I started to be convinced that the pizza delivery thing was actually a cover for him, and that he was actually a narc working for the cops.

That is exactly how I feel about Mike Carp.

  49. Jokerman on July 25th, 2011 7:10 pm

Brian Kingman went 8-20 in 1980. Anyone willing to bet if some team dusted him off today and threw him out against the M’s hed blank them for 7 innings?

  50. henryv on July 25th, 2011 7:15 pm

Wonder what that conversation was like.

Carl Willis: “Listen, Jason, our bullpen is shot, and also, they suck. You’re playing against one of the best teams in the MLB, and you’re also having to play against a first base umpire who has a few large on the game. So, just keep throwing, and we’ll buy you a nice meal after the game.”
    Jason Vargas: —
Justin Smoak: “My thumb is turning green. Is that bad?”
    Dustin Ackley: :sigh:
Home Plate Umpire: “Okay, guys, lets go. I got tickets for ‘The Book of Mormon’”
Dave Willis: “Then tell the moron at first base umpire to stop calling guys safe when they’re not.”

  51. Hammy57 on July 25th, 2011 7:15 pm

“The throw hit the bat”. Can our season get any worse?

  52. henryv on July 25th, 2011 7:16 pm

What position player do they have to pitch the 8th and 9th?

    Figgins?
    Cust?
    Wilson?

I’d really like to see Cust pitch.

  53. Breadbaker on July 25th, 2011 7:16 pm

    The Curse of Bobby Ayala?

  54. sherdogg21 on July 25th, 2011 7:17 pm

i am actually curious as to what would happen if you replaced the opposing pitcher with a pitching machine, set it 85 mph and let Mariners hack away, what would happen? 5 runs? 6?

  55. henryv on July 25th, 2011 7:17 pm

Oh, right Figgins is away from the team…

    However, Bard could pitch.

  56. henryv on July 25th, 2011 7:18 pm

I should call Vegas right now and drop $50 on us not winning another game this season. Funny thing is Id probably get even odds.

  58. sherdogg21 on July 25th, 2011 7:19 pm

Texas has scored 18 runs against the Twins, taken out Michael Young and Josh Hamilton… and its only the top of the 6th.

Is there anyone who is going to be a 3+ WAR player? I guess Ryan, maybe, but that’s it.

  67. henryv on July 25th, 2011 7:30 pm

The A’s put up a banner to honor their 2001 winning streak, which didn’t come close to winning them a division, a much bigger banner than the 116 wins thing. Bigger than the division title banner. I haven’t seen them cursed.

  84. FelixFanChris420 on July 25th, 2011 9:24 pm

It feels like were never going to win again. Is it just me, or has this year been even more frustrating than last year? Also, in regards to Jack Z not coming back, I think that would be horrible givin what he had to start with..and if all the GM’s we hire “don’t get the job done”, when will ownership wise up and fire the guys choosing all the GM’s? I honestly don’t think this team will win anything as long as HowChuck is around. Didn’t Pat Gillick say he’d be open to becoming a team president?(I know, its a pipe dream)

  85. DMZ on July 25th, 2011 9:25 pm

  86. The Nickster on July 25th, 2011 10:25 pm

So, if yer Ms management (and if you were, I’d be pissed at you), who do you sacrifice for this pathetic fall off a cliff? If we finish with another 100 losses (well on our way!), they have to do something right?

But of course that’s just for PR. I don’t think this season is Jack’s or Wedgie’s fault. A lot of stuff just happened to go wrong (but not the starting pitching). Maybe it’s a curse thing. I think you change on-field personnel (including a certain right fielder, but that’s never going to happen), but I keep Wedgie and Jack for another year.

Which means I just cursed them and they will be fired. Perhaps within the week.

I think you change on-field personnel (including a certain right fielder, but that’s never going to happen), but I keep Wedgie and Jack for another year.

Agreed…given the cluster that Jack inherited from the previous (ahem) GM, it’s tempting to blame him, but it’s honestly a tough sell. Wedge? It’s hard to blame him entirely either.

There’s enough blame to go around this year, just like in years past. When we pitch, we can’t hit. When we hit, we can’t pitch. “No one’s job is safe…everyone’s playing for their roster spot” is such a huge cliche, but I would like to see it have some teeth for once. I’m not suggesting that we DFA Ichiro or anything, but for once can we stop just flapping gums and actually mean what we say?

    Jeez…16? That’s 10% of the season!

… with more to come tonight. Unfortunately, there is an easy parallel to be made between the NFL and the Mariners: They are the Detroit Lions of Major League baseball.

As a lifelong Packer fan (47 years and counting now), I always wondered what it was like to be a Lions fan. Now I know.

    I don’t like it.
