Looks like Ryan is playing SS according to the Mariner’s blog… I’d rather see Kawasaki to be completely honest.

  2. argh on April 7th, 2012 5:25 pm

Ms’ site says Ryan has a stiff neck and Kawasaki’s in.

  3. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 5:37 pm

Ryan sure had a good day yesterday. For what that’s worth.

  4. msfanmike on April 7th, 2012 5:51 pm

Kind of surprised they did not take the opportunity to give olivo 2 days off and go with a LHB against a righty who owned them a week ago. Then again, olivo knows Felix much better than Jaso does. I hope we ultimately see less of olivo as the season evolves. Playing all your guys early in the season is a good idea and this seemed like an ideal day to give the backup catcher a start

  5. Westside guy on April 7th, 2012 5:53 pm

Why couldn’t Bartolo Colon have stayed washed up? ;-)

  6. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 6:05 pm

I’m thinking we’ll see Montero catching when Carp/Guti get back, since there will be more choices for DH.

  7. Slats on April 7th, 2012 6:11 pm

    Figgins triple!

  8. Swungonandbelted on April 7th, 2012 6:11 pm

    Figgy 2.0!

  9. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 6:12 pm

Okay, I LOVE Chone Figgins… (I may never say that again, but there it is… For all to see)

    3 for 4 yesterday, leadoff triple today… **** me

  10. Westside guy on April 7th, 2012 6:13 pm

Hey Figgins, you need to hit about .700 to make up for the 18 million the team’s wasted on you this past two years…

  11. georgmi on April 7th, 2012 6:13 pm

So who do we hate on if Figgins is actually good this year?

  12. Westside guy on April 7th, 2012 6:14 pm

Man, the A’s players seems to have some weird defensive issues right now.

  13. Transient Gadfly on April 7th, 2012 6:14 pm

God–what if instead of being below replacement level and epically terrible, Figgins was good?

  14. Slats on April 7th, 2012 6:15 pm

    Smoak is struggling so far.

  15. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 6:15 pm

    Westy-
If only somehow the guy could go down with the ship, during “sunken costs”…

But it never happens– just like that Italian Captain of that cruise ship. First one off.

  16. IwearMsHats on April 7th, 2012 6:16 pm

Come ON Smoak, get your head right!

  17. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 6:17 pm

    Slats-
I was thinking the same thing… He’s got his “careful/stiff” swing going from when he’s slumping/struggling. I remember it from last year… A slow, methodical swing, like he’s being extra careful/over thinking. He needs to “Saunders” it up a bit, just stop thinking and attack the ball.

  18. IwearMsHats on April 7th, 2012 6:19 pm

Felix’s weight loss caused his fastball velo dip

  19. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 6:19 pm

Felix just threw a 91 fastball. Looks like he looked last week.

  20. Westside guy on April 7th, 2012 6:20 pm

We’re slightly above three days in… let’s not write off anyone – or assume anyone has found their way again – quite yet. :-D

  21. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 6:22 pm

“God- what if instead of being below replacement level and epically terrible, Figgins was good?”

    God’s response: “Trade him!”

  22. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 6:24 pm

Yeah, I’m glad Figgins is doing well, but I’ll wait a few weeks to pass judgement.

  23. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 6:25 pm

Montero is a deeply religous man, highly ethical, and feels it’s only right that he should struggle while Pineda is on the Yankee’s IR.

  24. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 6:28 pm

In a way, Figgins actually still screwed up, because I think it’s pretty clear from last year that you’re NOT supposed to score any runs in the 1st inning.

  25. Slats on April 7th, 2012 6:31 pm

    Take that Cespedes!

  26. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 6:31 pm

Hey they just put up a tracer. So they do have it.

  27. eternal on April 7th, 2012 6:31 pm

I guess he is like Peguero

  28. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 6:32 pm

LOVED Felix giving a long extra look at Cespedes after making him look foolish…

  29. Westside guy on April 7th, 2012 6:33 pm

Maybe they’re limited to one per game. ;-)

  30. Westside guy on April 7th, 2012 6:35 pm

It will be interesting to watch Cespedes’ progress as the pitchers learn about him. He looks like a free swinger to me, along the lines of Olivo – if so, it should be possible to ameliorate the damage he does. But if he adjusts he’ll be truly scary.

  31. Westside guy on April 7th, 2012 6:37 pm

Wait, wait, wait… please tell me those aren’t vuvuzelas.

  32. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 6:38 pm

Felix is not lights out tonight.

  33. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 6:51 pm

    @Westy

I was just saying before the game, that it will be interesting to see how pitchers approach him, once they have a detailed scouting report. From the early going, I suspect his trouble will be going opposite field. Swings to kill everything.

  34. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 6:53 pm

    Paul-
If he keeps that breaking ball diving like that, he’ll be close enough to lights out for me. How fun is it to have a guy when he doesn’t have his best stuff he STILL dominates most lineups in MLB?!

  35. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 6:54 pm

OK, the guy that marries bacon is just so far beyond creepy.

  36. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 6:56 pm

    re: Cespedes

I think it will all be up to how well HE adjusts to MLB pitching… From what I’ve seen (limited, admittedly) when he swings at breaking balls, he’s not trying to hit a breaking ball, he’s been fooled and swings pretty blindly at what he thought was something else.

He can obviously handle straight stuff around the plate though.

  37. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 6:56 pm

    Nice!

  38. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 6:57 pm

    To quote someone else–

    He IS Peguero.

  39. Slats on April 7th, 2012 6:57 pm

    Ichiro!

  40. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 6:57 pm

THAT right there is all the explanation you need about how PREVENTING runs is as important as causing runs to be scored. Thank you Mr. Cespedes.

  41. Slats on April 7th, 2012 6:58 pm

Smoak – good to see him get a base hit + RBI.

  42. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 6:58 pm

Bad camera work, I didn’t see what happened there but figured it out on the replay. Oakland has some fielding issues.

  43. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 6:59 pm

    @Z

Well, it’s going to be a game. Pitchers will look for his holes and exploit them. Then, he’ll have to adjust. Once he has 2-300 at-bats, we’ll probably have a good idea what his issues are.

  44. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 6:59 pm

That was AWESOME– did you hear Montero swear in Spanish.

  45. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:01 pm

    Steve-
Yeah, that’s what I meant essentially– pitchers are going to be able to exploit him pretty easily, I think… So it’s all up to HIM and his adjustments. Until he shows he’s a threat to a major league breaking ball, I don’t think he’ll be scary to someone like Felix.

  46. justdan73 on April 7th, 2012 7:01 pm

Hello all. Long time reader, first time poster. #51 got lucky on that hit, true enough. However, even if it had been an out, I was very encouraged at the way he drove that ball with authority.

  47. Slats on April 7th, 2012 7:02 pm

    Finally Miggy.

  48. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:02 pm

Yeah, I thought it was funny how everyone talked about his monster home run last night, but didn’t seem to notice a couple of ugly K’s

  49. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:03 pm

Bottom of the order getting it done again!

  50. zzyzx on April 7th, 2012 7:04 pm

Huh? You’re allowed to score more than one run in an inning?

  51. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:04 pm

Damn, hope I didn’t jinx Saunders.

  52. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:05 pm

    zzyzx-
SHHHHHHHH… They’ll take these runs away!

  53. ManageWA on April 7th, 2012 7:05 pm

Who are these Mariners? I don’t like them here. They’re making me have hope. I can’t have hope for Seattle teams. It’s just not right!

  54. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 7:05 pm

Oakland could have saved a pile of money, they just could have given the Mariners something for Peguero instead of signing Careless.

  55. justdan73 on April 7th, 2012 7:05 pm

    Ichiro 2.0!

  56. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:05 pm

Geez, horrible defense by Oakland -again. But congrats to Kawasaki!! Great job!

  57. nvn8vbryce on April 7th, 2012 7:05 pm

Listening to the A’s announcers is like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard, however, I can’t argue with the crooked number on the board!

  58. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:06 pm

    Hey

SUDDENLY I think I know that guy on the mound… Is that Bartolo Colon? I recognize him by his pitching now (unlike last week).

  59. Slats on April 7th, 2012 7:06 pm

Figgins lol trade him whilst he’s hot!!

  60. Swungonandbelted on April 7th, 2012 7:07 pm

    Figgy!

  61. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:07 pm

Wow!! What the hell has gotten into Figgins?!!

  62. nvn8vbryce on April 7th, 2012 7:07 pm

    FIGGY!!!!!!!!!

  63. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 7:07 pm

Cespedes. But that was an interesting WordPerfect.

  64. Breadbaker on April 7th, 2012 7:07 pm

Is this the Mariners offense or am I going to wake up in a few minutes and see they’re 2 for 23 again?

  65. justdan73 on April 7th, 2012 7:07 pm

Don’t waste all those runs tonight, fellas! ;)

  66. groundzero55 on April 7th, 2012 7:07 pm

WHAT TEAM IS THIS AND WHAT HAVE THEY DONE WITH MY MARINERS??

  67. msfanmike on April 7th, 2012 7:07 pm

Any questions as to why it is important to be
Solid up the middle defensively. The A’s are horrible on defense. Good for us and hey – Figgins!

  68. Sports on a Schtick on April 7th, 2012 7:07 pm

Things learned this weekend: the A’s defense sucks and maybe the M’s offense is decent.

  69. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:07 pm

Maybe he’s going to provide all the hits he should have had last year, along with this years?!

  70. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 7:07 pm

Figgins almost had his annual homer there.

  71. zzyzx on April 7th, 2012 7:08 pm

2 extra base hits for Figgins? Colon must be washed up.

  72. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:08 pm

Your American League player of the week:

    the Mariners’ Chone Figgins!

    (gulp)

*Figgins goes for the cycle and all hell breaks lose in blog-ville*

  73. Slats on April 7th, 2012 7:08 pm

How’s this for run support Felix?

  74. zzyzx on April 7th, 2012 7:09 pm

I wonder is Felix is going to be confused walking out to the mound with a 7 run lead.

  75. msfanmike on April 7th, 2012 7:09 pm

    ‘Careless’ actually works, Paul

  76. Rboyle0628 on April 7th, 2012 7:09 pm

Ok… ok… who stuffed Figgins in a closet and is parading around in a Figgins mask?

  77. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:09 pm

7 runs, two nights in a row, off the A’s top starters… that’s gotta be a huge confidence builder!

  78. nvn8vbryce on April 7th, 2012 7:09 pm

Mom: Man, that A’s pitcher is fat.
Me: Yep, but I’m not going to complain about the results.

All I can say is go Felix and go M’s!

  79. seahopp on April 7th, 2012 7:09 pm

Is this real life? I have so much hope in me I thought that Figgins had hit a home run.

  80. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:10 pm

    Paul B-
That was hilarious word picking by WordPerfect… I think in many languages “Peguero” actually translates loosely to “Careless”.

  81. nvn8vbryce on April 7th, 2012 7:11 pm

*Figgins goes for the cycle and all hell breaks lose in blog-ville*
I hope that USS Mariner’s server will take the heat and not melt down…

  82. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:11 pm

    re: Cespedes’ Defense

I really can’t believe they gave us a triple on that ball to center that he came in on then rushed back and lost off the top of his glove. I’ll take it, but that was some iffy bookwork by the official scorer.

  83. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:12 pm

“Mom: Man, that A’s pitcher is fat.
Me: Yep, but I’m not going to complain about the results.”

The Onion has a sports headline this week
“Bartolo Colon Rolls Uncontrollably Down Hill”

    (cracked me up)

  84. nvn8vbryce on April 7th, 2012 7:14 pm

Time to worry about Felix yet?

  85. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:14 pm

That didn’t look like it hit him, but I still like the message sent.

  86. nvn8vbryce on April 7th, 2012 7:15 pm

That didn’t look like it hit him, but I still like the message sent.

It looked more like chin music to me…

  87. justdan73 on April 7th, 2012 7:15 pm

I wonder if the M’s have scored more runs is support of Felix so far this season then they did all of last year? I kid, but really, its gotta be close.

  88. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:16 pm

    Triple Play?

  89. groundzero55 on April 7th, 2012 7:16 pm

See? 7 run lead and now Felix is out of sorts.

  90. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:18 pm

“It looked more like chin music to me…”

Me too. Message sent, in response to his admiring his “Careless” Peguero-like homer yesterday:

“I don’t know where you’re from, but you can’t do whatever you want here… But I can.”

    (first at-bat: wicked strikeout)
(2nd at-bat: up and in brushback)

  91. WWUmariner on April 7th, 2012 7:19 pm

He’s just not used to pitching with a lead, or having a break between innings longer than a couple minutes. Hopefully he’ll get some practice with those things this year.

  92. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:19 pm

    GroundZero-
I was thinking that… Well, there’s our answer, Felix has NO IDEA how to pitch with a big lead. *laugh*

  93. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 7:20 pm

Bases loaded, no out, and they only got 1 run.

  94. msfanmike on April 7th, 2012 7:21 pm

3rd at bat: the real beaning should occur – assuming bases are empty.

  95. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:22 pm

Yes, because Major League Baseball fans are your market for “Smirnoff Whipped”. (?) Nice ad placement Smirnoff. (They advertise, what, for Mariners games and “Keeping up with the Kardashians”?)

  96. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:23 pm

Ichiro! They’re showing Colon no mercy tonight!

  97. nvn8vbryce on April 7th, 2012 7:23 pm

(They advertise, what, for Mariners games and “Keeping up with the Kardashians”?)

Why do you think Schick Shadel advertises so much?

    BTW, nice hit Ichi!

  98. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:24 pm

    re: Felix’s loss of velocity

Doesn’t worry me a bit. The man can put the ball where he wants it, any time, anywhere. And if he keeps his fastball in the low ’90s, he’ll be pitching in the 2025 World Series for your Seattle Mariners… And maybe the 2030 World Series too.

  99. msfanmike on April 7th, 2012 7:25 pm

If my lip reading skills are anywhere in the ballpark, Felix was talking to wells about cespedes. The words “take your base you piece of shit” seemed unmistakable.

  100. Breadbaker on April 7th, 2012 7:26 pm

Bases loaded, no out, and they only got 1 run.

One more than the expected scoring output from that situation of your 2011 Mariners.

  101. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:27 pm

What, if anything, is Oakland’s strength on defense? Ugly ugly baseball.

  102. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:28 pm

Thank You, Jesus! (nice hit, Son)

  103. msfanmike on April 7th, 2012 7:29 pm

Montero is just getting warmed up. He is going to be a real nice hitter. Likes the first pitch fastball – a lot! I suspect he will start seeing fewer of them

  104. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 7:30 pm

I don’t even question Ichiro. That baserunning looked crazy, but he did what was best, I’m sure.

  105. msfanmike on April 7th, 2012 7:31 pm

    Crap!

    Oops

  106. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 7:31 pm

    Montero fell asleep?

  107. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 7:33 pm

I’d forgotten the bad baserunning this spring.

  108. seahopp on April 7th, 2012 7:33 pm

Montero looks like a guy who is really nervous out there. Which is understandable when you’re the centerpiece of a blockbuster trade.

  109. Sports on a Schtick on April 7th, 2012 7:36 pm

Smoak is the one who really worries me. Ugh.

  110. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 7:36 pm

They scored that a caught stealing instead of a pickoff, so Ichiro doesn’t get a stolen base.

  111. jordan on April 7th, 2012 7:38 pm

So when did we move to San Francisco?

  112. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 7:40 pm

    SF? What did I miss?

  113. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:41 pm

Looked like he used every muscle and bone in his body to get into that pitch.

  114. texasmarinerfan on April 7th, 2012 7:43 pm

These MLB.Tv adds are getting SO annoying.

  115. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:44 pm

By the way, I was talking about Weeks.

Just heard about Fister going on the DL. Feel bad for him. I’d like to see him have a strong season.

  116. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:45 pm

    Wow-
    Who’s gonna call Z not a genius now…

    Michael Pineda – diaabled list
Doug Fister – diabled list (as of today)

  117. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:46 pm

    Steve-
Heh, just saw the same thing…

  118. jordan on April 7th, 2012 7:47 pm

…And this has been ongoing since the beginning of Spring for Pineda. Hopefully he isn’t going to have a career plauged by injury.

  119. Slats on April 7th, 2012 7:47 pm

    Saunders crushed that!

  120. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 7:47 pm

    BAM! Attack that ball…

  121. nvn8vbryce on April 7th, 2012 7:48 pm

    CONDOR!!!!!

  122. msfanmike on April 7th, 2012 7:48 pm

Yes – and off a lefty!!!

  123. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:48 pm

Condor! I swear, I just called that in front of my lady as I explained the count in his favor!

  124. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 7:49 pm

That is good to see. I’m with Schtick, Smoak is the one struggling now.

  125. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:50 pm

Too early to say anyone is struggling, unless they’ve got 10 k’s. Wait… he doesn’t have 10 k’s, does he?!

  126. seahopp on April 7th, 2012 7:53 pm

Smoak does not have 10 k’s. That bloop single was only his second hit this season (the first being the HR in Japan).

  127. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:53 pm

Here we go… Cespedes at the plate again

  128. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 7:55 pm

I was kidding, I know he doesn’t have 10k’s. I know he only has a couple hits as well, but it really is too early. I watched those games in Japan, and he still hit the ball real hard.

  129. nvn8vbryce on April 7th, 2012 7:55 pm

… and those are the results we want to see…

  130. msfanmike on April 7th, 2012 7:56 pm

Made careless look silly on that at bat. Silly as hell. Maybe league can plunk him in the 9th

  131. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 8:00 pm

Damn. Smart play by Smoak though to cut that off

  132. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 8:01 pm

Luetge has “old man” cleats… I didn’t even know New Balance made baseball shoes? He must have wide feet.

  133. ManageWA on April 7th, 2012 8:02 pm

Just to verify, we’re now calling Cespedes Careless?

  134. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 8:03 pm

    Manage-
Yeah, earlier WordPerfect autocorrected Cespedes to “Careless”, and we all found it amusing.

  135. ManageWA on April 7th, 2012 8:05 pm

Then I shall spread that across the wide world of webs.

  136. Westside guy on April 7th, 2012 8:05 pm

I’m rather late and catching up on the DVR, but I gotta say it – CONDOR!!!

  137. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 8:05 pm

New Balance is for oldsters? That explains why I like them, then.

  138. jordan on April 7th, 2012 8:07 pm

Cespedes reminds me so much of Peguero. ENJOY HIM OAKLAND… hope all that money is worth it.

  139. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 8:08 pm

hmmm, so Felix and Jason wont be starting every game?

  140. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 8:12 pm

Detroit fans probably aren’t as worried about Fister as we would be if we still had him…

    Today’s game vs Red Sox:
    Prince Fielder – 2 HR’s
    Miguel Cabrera – 2 HR’s

    That’s gotta be fun.

  141. Edgar4Hall on April 7th, 2012 8:17 pm

what was the pitchfx of Felix? I havent been worried about him but I just started watching in the 6th and it seems that he has gotten more line drives hit off of him than I like.

  142. ManageWA on April 7th, 2012 8:23 pm

    Fucking Careless :(

  143. msfanmike on April 7th, 2012 8:23 pm

    Frack!!!

  144. nvn8vbryce on April 7th, 2012 8:23 pm

    Damn…

  145. Slats on April 7th, 2012 8:23 pm

Please tell me we won’t lose this.

  146. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 8:23 pm

Damn. Right in the middle of the plate.

  147. eternal on April 7th, 2012 8:24 pm

Why put anything near the plate with him?

  148. Edgar4Hall on April 7th, 2012 8:24 pm

    Dammit

  149. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 8:24 pm

Way too much of the plate.

  150. Swungonandbelted on April 7th, 2012 8:24 pm

    Ruh-Roh…

  151. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 8:24 pm

Do they NOT read this blog, did I NOT say earlier he can obviously hit anything straight near the plate?

    Does anybody listen?

  152. Breadbaker on April 7th, 2012 8:24 pm

The only fastballs I’d throw him would be well inside.

  153. jordan on April 7th, 2012 8:25 pm

If you throw anything with a spin on it in the dirt he swings… WHY EVEN THROW A STRIKE?

  154. nvn8vbryce on April 7th, 2012 8:25 pm

I don’t care if first base is open or not, the only thing an opposing pitcher should be doing is intentionally walking Cespedes.

  155. Edgar4Hall on April 7th, 2012 8:25 pm

So felix is charged for Delabar screwing up. Remind me again why ERA has never been challenged until recently?

  156. nvn8vbryce on April 7th, 2012 8:26 pm

Felix better not get a no-decision…

  157. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 8:27 pm

The worst part is that we’re going to hear even more crap about what a great hitter Cespedes is, when he just simply drove a ball you’d see at batting practice.

  158. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 8:29 pm

    @Edgar4Hall

That was one of my first thoughts

  159. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 8:31 pm

    @nvn8vbryce

All he had to do was not hang anything in the middle of the plate.

  160. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 8:35 pm

Good to see the M’s aren’t rollin’ over. Would love to see Kawasaki get his second RBI here!

  161. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 8:36 pm

    I’ll blame Olivo.

  162. G-Man on April 7th, 2012 8:37 pm

A little surprised thers been no PHers in this sequence.

  163. IwearMsHats on April 7th, 2012 8:39 pm

I would have PH for Kawasaki there with Wells and put figgins at SS but Kawasaki had a pretty solid AB.

  164. Breadbaker on April 7th, 2012 8:41 pm

A little surprised thers been no PHers in this sequence.

Ordinarily I’d say it was the hot hand theory, but I don’t think Ryan is available so Kawasaki was clearly not being pinch hit for. If he had pinch hit Wells for Saunders, Kawasaki would have faced a righty, I’m guessing.

  165. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 8:45 pm

Is it cowardly to turn off the game and not watch the 9th inning… Then just wake up and see who won tomorrow?

    (Seriously tempted)

  166. msfanmike on April 7th, 2012 8:47 pm

Nice work by Willy. White knuckler ninth forthcoming

  167. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 8:48 pm

I used to do that a lot, turn the game off with a less.

with a 1 run lead, wouldn’t have wanted Figgins at short, so I wouldn’t have hit for Kawasaki.

  168. G-Man on April 7th, 2012 8:50 pm

Sold his soul to the devil, I swear.

    Figgins.

  169. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 8:51 pm

So which happened this season? Oakland’s pitching went in the toilet? Or the M’s offense is suddenly full of life?

Some mix of the two? Won’t know for a week or so, I suppose.

  170. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 8:52 pm

“Sold his soul to the devil, I swear.

    Figgins.”

I’m okay with that… We get the production we were hoping for, and he still burns in hell for his last two seasons… (I’m KIDDING, but funny…)

  171. G-Man on April 7th, 2012 8:53 pm

    Figgins with the takeout slide!

  172. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 8:53 pm

Great hit by Figgins, great slide by Figgins.

  173. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 8:55 pm

Why run into an out with the middle of the lineup up? Why?

**whatever, would have been a double play**

  174. nvn8vbryce on April 7th, 2012 8:55 pm

This aggressiveness is going to drive most of us to Schick Shadel, I’m afraid…

  175. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 8:56 pm

Yeah, I didn~t like that call.

  176. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 8:57 pm

I wonder if the A’s will complain about League’s shirt showing.

  177. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 8:57 pm

    nvn8vbryce

Yeah, suddenly I’m jonesin’ for some Smirnoff Whipped.

(holding my breath through the bottom of the 9th– don’t kill me Brandon)

  178. Edgar4Hall on April 7th, 2012 9:00 pm

Holy crap! Oakland fans are sounding interested in baseball!

  179. seahopp on April 7th, 2012 9:00 pm

Good to see Figgy playing well two games in a row.

  180. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 9:01 pm

This is totally petty, but I would be SO MUCH MORE of a Brandon League fan if he cut the Mallard tail off the back of his hair. Drives me nuts. I just wanna take some clippers and go right around the back edge of the cap.

  181. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 9:02 pm

I had the same haircut, but from age 17-21(?). Doesn’t bother me;)

  182. Slats on April 7th, 2012 9:05 pm

    Go Mariners!!

  183. stevemotivateir on April 7th, 2012 9:06 pm

3 and 1 -on the road! (yes, I know Japan wasn’t really road games)

  184. Edgar4Hall on April 7th, 2012 9:06 pm

MrZ concerning League, I couldn’t disagree more. In fact, I think he should do a reverse Brian Wilson, where he makes a huge “beard” in the back of his hair that sticks out from behind. I think it would be awesome :) .

    And Wuhoo! Win!

  185. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 9:06 pm

1st place in the AL West after 4 games.

    26 hits in the last 2 games… 15 runs.

    Figgins kickin’ butt?

    Wha?

If I’m asleep and the season hasn’t really started yet, I’m gonna so annoyed. (But don’t wake me up yet)

  186. Paul B on April 7th, 2012 9:06 pm

    OK, I can breathe again.

  187. henryv on April 7th, 2012 9:07 pm

    Mariners leading hitter… Chone Figgins(?)

  188. henryv on April 7th, 2012 9:08 pm

Oh god, Olivo interview… Please no.

  189. kimalanus on April 7th, 2012 9:08 pm

Welp, he’s not batting .188 any more.

  190. MrZDevotee on April 7th, 2012 9:09 pm

    henryv-

Olivo: “We just let (Colon) pitch and that’s when we hit him.”

    Uh.

    Hmmm.

  191. henryv on April 7th, 2012 9:11 pm

It feels like a pretty severe punishment to force us to watch Olivo try to catch, and THEN have to listen to him give an interview.

Please, just send Brendan Ryan out. He’s not busy.

  192. henryv on April 7th, 2012 9:13 pm

Cespedes might very well be the worst defensive center fielder I’ve ever seen.

  193. Westside guy on April 7th, 2012 9:44 pm

Cespedes is pretty bad – funny thing is I could swear I’d previously heard the talking heads playing up his ability… or maybe it was just his speed?

Anyway, he does seem to give a fair bit of his offensive value back when he’s out in the field.

  194. Westside guy on April 7th, 2012 9:51 pm

Ha ha, Figgins OPS currently sitting at an even 1.000, second on the team only to My Man Condor’s 1.015. I’d love to see those number hold up, if only because they’re so improbable!

  195. henryv on April 7th, 2012 10:01 pm

If I’m Billy Beane I’m looking for a defensive center fielder for cheap, ASAP, to move Cespedes to a corner spot.

Actually, I might have a call in for Treyvon Robinson.

  196. Westside guy on April 7th, 2012 10:18 pm

Hey, we’ve got a very versatile guy who can play center and all sorts of other positions – and he’s an offensive powerhouse as well! His OPS is 1.000!

Billy Beane, pick up the phone!

  197. eternal on April 7th, 2012 10:19 pm

why not just flip cespedes and crisp?

  198. currcoug on April 8th, 2012 2:01 pm

I am somewhat amused by the Cespedes/Peguero comparisons. Cespedes has all of four MLB games under his belt. His stats in Cuba do not evidence a free swinger, although it will take some time for him to adjust to MLB pitching.

O.co Park is a tough place to play. Cespedes is just getting used to MLB hitters, and night baseball in general. He has plus speed, a good first step, and a plus arm. I believe he will be a solid OF for the A’s, and a feared hitter for years to come. Crisp has a noodle arm, and the A’s should give Cespedes every opportunity to prove he belongs in CF.

I would be thrilled if Cespedes was in the middle of the Mariners’ order.

  199. henryv on April 8th, 2012 10:33 pm

eternal, I seem to remember Crisp not having a quality arm.

The excuse given by the A’s was that Cespedes has always played center, and Crisp has played the corners.

But I imagine it actually has something to do with his ridiculous name, and feeling like they don’t want a CF named after a breakfast cereal.

  200. Westside guy on April 8th, 2012 11:07 pm

It’s only been a handful of games, but it sure looks like all three A’s outfielders have defensive issues. I’m not sure that rearranging them will accomplish much.

But who knows, maybe these first games have been an aberration. As a Mariners’ fan… I’m hoping not though. :-D

  201. Paul B on April 9th, 2012 7:38 am

Is there someway to see stats from Cuba?

In his 4 games, he has 7 strikeouts and 0 walks, combined with his struggles in the outfield and his power at the plate, that certainly is a Peguero-esque performance.

If he has an ability to recognize the strikezone, then he will be a fearsome hitter indeed.
