Game 57, Mariners at Angels

Jay Yencich · June 4, 2012 at 6:44 pm · Filed Under Game Threads, Mariners

Vargas vs. Santana, 7:05 pm PDT

Gosh, there’s some baseball on today, isn’t there? On the TV and the radio and everything.

RF Ichiro!
2B Ackley
3B Seager
1B Smoak
DH Jaso
LF Carp
C Olivo
CF Saunders
SS Kawasaki

With a right-hander on the mound, the Mariners are going with their lefty-heavy lineup. One might prefer Montero considering he’s had multiple hits in four of his last six games, but Olivo is still around and he hit the dinger yesterday. Let Zunino’s being drafted serve as a reminder that the sun will soon set on the second Miguel Olivo Era.

Smoakamotive won AL Player of the Week. I hope he continues to chug along.

Zunino being drafted -might indicate an extension for Olivo. Who else has the veteran grittiness to show a new backstop the ropes?!

  2. Slats on June 4th, 2012 7:08 pm

    Keep it going Smoak!

    Lets go Seattle.

  3. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:12 pm

    Seager!

  4. henryv on June 4th, 2012 7:12 pm

Seager might actually be good at baseball.

  5. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:13 pm

I hope we can someday trade for his brother.

  6. henryv on June 4th, 2012 7:13 pm

I swear to god if this ends up being true, I’m going to become a San Diego Padres fan.

  7. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 7:14 pm

    haha Henry!

Nice start for the M’s tonight!

  8. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 7:14 pm

    Seager!

    (slightly late, I know)

  9. Slats on June 4th, 2012 7:15 pm

    Seager baby!

  10. Slats on June 4th, 2012 7:15 pm

    Smoak has it going still.

  11. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 7:16 pm

I will choose to believe Zunino being drafted indicates the team will never, EVER consider extending Olivo.

Although, unlike Henry, if they do I’ll switch loyalties to a less vexing team – maybe Philly.

  12. henryv on June 4th, 2012 7:20 pm

But… but… San Diego are our most hated rivals! Bud Selid says so!

  13. Bladerunner on June 4th, 2012 7:22 pm

Carp- the out machine ends the first inning.

  14. Slats on June 4th, 2012 7:23 pm

    Send Carp down.

  15. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:24 pm

Are you in the UK or from the UK and rooting stateside, blade runner?

  16. henryv on June 4th, 2012 7:24 pm

That throw by Ichiro was really, really bad? Was he just hoping to get the guy on first to run and get cut down at second?

  17. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 7:25 pm

But Carp was Ken Wilson’s Pick To Click(TM), Bladerunner!?

  18. henryv on June 4th, 2012 7:26 pm

There is something viciously mean about Vargas having a really good change-up that makes you lean out, and a cut fastball that he occasionally will throw high and inside.

  19. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:27 pm

Carp is out of options. He would have to clear before being sent down. Will be interesting to see if org provides him with the same luxury as Smoak (work out issues at MLB level). He has definitely stunk this year. Looks like he is Trying to “lift” everything and not ever really hitting the ball square.

  20. Bladerunner on June 4th, 2012 7:29 pm

Msfanmike, I am in the UK. 3:30am over here.

  21. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:30 pm

Saunders with a higher average, OBP, SLG %, wOBA and WRC+ than Ackley. Who would have ever thought that possible based on last season.

  22. henryv on June 4th, 2012 7:32 pm

Carp’s wOBA is just below Ichiro’s, and above Ryan’s and Olivo’s. And his current BABIP is .182, which is utterly impossible to sustain unless you’re Eric Byrnes hitting infield flies.

  23. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:32 pm

You are one dedicated mo-FO, blade runner. In what manner are you able to see the game?

  24. henryv on June 4th, 2012 7:33 pm

    Cocaine?

  25. henryv on June 4th, 2012 7:34 pm

Kawasaki got the ball all the way to the pitcher! We’re so proud of our mascot!

  26. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:34 pm

Speaking of KenWilson … He is great on the radio. Isn’t he an obvious full time choice for the gig? Assuming he even wants it.

  27. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 7:35 pm

I’m assuming you’re using mlbtv, bladerunner. Right? I’m certainly curious, as I’ll soon be attempting to follow the games from Sao Paulo.

  28. henryv on June 4th, 2012 7:35 pm

I just assume it’s Curto. Ken Wilson isn’t going to be able to do it all the time, I thought.

  29. Bladerunner on June 4th, 2012 7:36 pm

Thanks, I watch the game on vipbox.tv. But over the summer I will be investing in mlb.tv when I can afford it. You make a good point about Saunders, will Guti automatically replace in centre you think??

  30. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 7:36 pm

Funny you said that, Mike. I’ve caught more of the last few games on the radio, than on the TV. I’d like to hear more of him too.

  31. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 7:38 pm

Saunders will likely move to left when Guti’s back, though I would suspect Guti will still get plenty O’ days off.

  32. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 7:38 pm

I know that wasn’t addressed to me, but thought I’d respond anyway :P

  33. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:40 pm

Tagging from first on a fly to the RF corner. Gutsy!

  34. Bladerunner on June 4th, 2012 7:41 pm

It’s ok stevemotivateir, that is what I thought would happen. Better question, who would be replaced on the roster. Carp, if he still isn’t hitting. Or is it finally the end of Figgins?

  35. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 7:43 pm

That’s the million dollar (9mil) question! Logic says Figgins goes, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they sent Liddi down.

  36. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:44 pm

Steve, you may or may not be old enough to remember, but Ken Wilson was Dave Niehaus’ original partner in the booth … For the first few seasons of the franchise. He is very good. Not sure why he ever left, but I think Rizzs replaced him originally.

  37. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:46 pm

Two bad babip luck outs for Ichiro today. He hit both balls well.

  38. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:47 pm

Does anyone think Ackley might have been rushed to the majors?

  39. Bladerunner on June 4th, 2012 7:47 pm

Yeah, but I am hoping some logic prevails and they don’t send Liddi down. He is flat out better than Figgins.

  40. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:53 pm

How is Ackley not standing on 3B. Bad read on his part. Bad

  41. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 7:53 pm

Mike, I don’t remember actually hearing him back then (though, I did), as I was fairly young, but I did know he was Dave’s partner. There was a lot of talk about that at the time of Dave’s passing.

  42. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 7:54 pm

So was Wells, Bladerunner! Don’t put your money on logic if Wedge has a say in it!

    Jaso!

  43. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:54 pm

All is well that ends well.

    Jaso!

Come on Carp. Square one up

  44. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 7:56 pm

    Great play by Albert.

    Crap!!!

  45. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 7:56 pm

Wow, great hustle by Carp. Got robbed! At least he got the RBI and stayed out of the DP

  46. Bladerunner on June 4th, 2012 8:01 pm

That is exactly why I am hoping that Wedge doesn’t have a say. But Liddi has some flexibility (including LF despite it being terrifying whenever he is out there) so hopefully they can’t say Figgins needs to be kept for flexibility.

  47. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:03 pm

    Nice!

  48. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 8:05 pm

    Phew!

  49. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:07 pm

Yeah, there really isn’t an excuse for Figgins. It’s just pure stubbornness at this point.

  50. henryv on June 4th, 2012 8:08 pm

Yeah, there really isn’t an excuse for Figgins. It’s just pure stubbornness at this point.

    2013 draft positioning?

  51. henryv on June 4th, 2012 8:09 pm

Kawasaki with the best he can do: Reaches on error.

  52. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:10 pm

Drayer suggested (in her blog) there might have been some concern that the Angels or Rangers might pick him up if he were released. I fail to see how that should be a concern. It should be a prayer!

  53. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 8:10 pm

I would kind of like to see Liddi get a chance to play every day in AAA for about a month to see if he can dominate down there and to iron out his xontact rate issues. I think he needs it. The Figgins decision might likely come down to deciding between him and Wells, ultimately … Again. I can’t see the team dumping Figgins until they have cleared through the inter league schedule. I wish they would cut bait, but I doubt they will

  54. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:11 pm

He’s not playing enough for that to be an excuse, Henry! But that’s probably the most reasonable excuse.

  55. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:13 pm

Yeah, I kinda agree with ya, Mike. I’d rather see Liddi at third or first in Tacoma, than in LF here. Really, I wanna see Wells back up, replacing Figgins.

  56. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 8:16 pm

Ackleys head drops (in elevation) quite a bit when he strides. It’s hard to hit a ball with that type of swing mechanic. I am not sure if it is any more pronounced than when he got called up, but it is sure leading to a lot of ugly AB’s currently.

  57. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:19 pm

    crap

  58. WTF_Ms on June 4th, 2012 8:20 pm

I heard the TV guys mention that the other day. Something about keeping “still” when he swings.

  59. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:20 pm

And he milked Vargas for 7 pitches.

  60. henryv on June 4th, 2012 8:20 pm

Wade Boggs had a similar swing.

  61. Bladerunner on June 4th, 2012 8:22 pm

Dave Cameron tweeted something earlier. He said that with the addition of Appel by Pittsburgh, the Pirates have the best trio of pitching prospects in the minor leagues, taking over from the M’s. Thoughts anyone??

  62. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 8:23 pm

… But without the head drop. Boggs kept his head on plane very well.

  63. henryv on June 4th, 2012 8:24 pm

Dave Cameron tweeted something earlier. He said that with the addition of Appel by Pittsburgh, the Pirates have the best trio of pitching prospects in the minor leagues, taking over from the M’s. Thoughts anyone??

They’re the Pirates. I’m more concerned about the prospect of Arsenal playing baseball and outscoring the M’s than the Pittsburgh Pirates being competition in the future.

  64. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:25 pm

I was shocked Appel went that low. I wouldn’t have been surprised at all if the M’s had snagged him, though I did anticipate them taking Zunino.

  65. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 8:28 pm

More worried about Nationals than Pirates. Strasburg and someday soon (presumably) Giolito. Holy freaking fast ball smoke, Bat Man.

  66. henryv on June 4th, 2012 8:29 pm

I think that Ackley is now seeing a ton of low and outside pitches, and is starting to dive and lunge out to swing. I would like to see him get a few days off, and work on that.

  67. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 8:36 pm

    It’s a Christmas miracle. Olivo!

  68. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:36 pm

    Yes! Re-sign him now!

  69. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:37 pm

    Nobody’s gonna bite?

  70. WTF_Ms on June 4th, 2012 8:38 pm

The Angels are going to walk them loaded, cause they know we can’t get anyone in…

  71. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:39 pm

This is what I dreamed of… just give us a bases-loaded opportunity with Kawasaki at the plate!

  72. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 8:39 pm

    Woo hoo!!!

  73. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:40 pm

Oh no! Did Sims REALLY just say that?!

  74. Paul B on June 4th, 2012 8:40 pm

Manager’s rule #413: If you give up an extra base hit to Kawasaki, you get pulled from the game.

  75. californiamariner on June 4th, 2012 8:41 pm

Kawasaki with a 3 run double. Don’t get to say that very often!

  76. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:41 pm

Joking aside, I’m really happy for him. He really needed a big hit!

  77. Bladerunner on June 4th, 2012 8:41 pm

Wow, who expected that! In one inning, intentional walk on Carp, Olivo RBI, crowned by a bases-clearing double by the mascot. Is Vargas gonna throw 98 next inning to fully confuse me?

  78. meeksfred on June 4th, 2012 8:41 pm

Did i really just watch Olivo and Kawasaki do that back-to-back?

  79. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 8:43 pm

I said it was a Christmas miracle

  80. Paul B on June 4th, 2012 8:46 pm

What did Sims say? I’m watching the Angel’s broadcast.

  81. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 8:47 pm

Sims said “Let the good times roll!”

  82. Ichirolling51 on June 4th, 2012 8:52 pm

Do we have to play another home game this season?

  83. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 8:56 pm

Sims has said that any time Kawasaki has gotten a hit this season. Or scored a run. Or stolen a base. Or done a push up. He can’t stop saying it, apparently.

  84. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 8:59 pm

Jumping way back in the thread… sorry, I was away for a bit.

I really hope Wedge is smart when Guti comes back, and he does put Saunders in left most of the time. My fear, though, is Saunders will be relegated to a late-game defensive replacement in left on those days he’s not starting in center. I would not be surprised to see Carp and Liddi manning left field a good bit of the time.

What I say makes no logical sense, I realize – but that’s how little faith I have in Wedge’s ability to judge talent or make intelligent baseball decisions.

  85. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 9:00 pm

I heard him say it once before. I usually try to tune him out!

  86. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 9:02 pm

There’s a surprise…. Morales hitting the ball hard off Mariner pitching.

  87. Paul B on June 4th, 2012 9:03 pm

Kawasaki is leading all Mariner hitters with a .160 WPA so far in this game.

I had to post that, in case it changes later on.

  88. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 9:04 pm

Would be funny if the Angels have trouble seeing the ball because of the smoke

  89. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:06 pm

Kawasaki deserves a multi-year extension right now!

  90. Paul B on June 4th, 2012 9:06 pm

I would not be surprised to see Carp and Liddi manning left field a good bit of the time

OTOH, this probably would mean that Figgins would be gone, so… silver lining?

  91. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:08 pm

That would be the worst silver lining in the history of silver linings, Paul. ;-)

More of a aluminum foil lining.

  92. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:10 pm

BTW that sinker of Vargas’ must be very difficult to pick up, given the swings he’s getting at those bouncing in the dirt.

  93. Paul B on June 4th, 2012 9:11 pm

Guess I was just thinking of who they would send out when Guti comes back. Logical choice would be Figgins. My second choice would be Olivo. I guess they could give up on Carp, but I don’t really see that happening now.

If Liddi stays on a downward track, maybe they’d send him out.

  94. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:12 pm

I don’t want them to give up on Carp – I just don’t think he should be getting a lot of starts ahead of Condor, given their relative levels of production this year.

And Liddi… should never be out there. Liddi should probably go down, actually.

  95. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 9:12 pm

Hey, maybe the smoke DID have something to do with it, eh?!

  96. Paul B on June 4th, 2012 9:13 pm

    Oh boy, League.

  97. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:13 pm

Woo hoo – League Time!! Wait, what am I saying?

Steve – that would be funny if the smoke was blinding their own players.

  98. Paul B on June 4th, 2012 9:15 pm

This lead does not feel safe.

  99. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:15 pm

I fear Trout is going to be a pain in our collective backsides for many years to come…

  100. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:24 pm

I thought that was foul! Way to go Condor!!

Kawasaki looks like a high school kid up there… :-)

  101. EricL on June 4th, 2012 9:25 pm

    That was fair? Really?

  102. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:27 pm

    Kawasaki is an on-base MACHINE.

    (tonight)

  103. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 9:28 pm

Don’t go fishing this time, Ichiro. You need to
Get things rolling. Please start now

  104. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 9:28 pm

I’d laugh if the contracts for Wilson and Pujols ended up making it difficult to re-sign Trout after his arbitration years.

  105. Kazinski on June 4th, 2012 9:31 pm

I’d be a little worried that Olivo’s games yesterday and today would relegate Jaso back to the bench, but Jaso is having a pretty good game himself. Maybe by the time Guti comes back Olivo will be traded, that would solve a few problems too.

  106. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 9:34 pm

^Yeah, that would make too much sense!

  107. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:36 pm

Kazinski, Jaso did very well while Olivo was out; yet all that seems to have gained him is a little more DH activity.

    It’s surreal.

  108. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:39 pm

Boy, that Morrow trade sure got us a good 7th-inning guy.

  109. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:42 pm

Am I the only one who keeps thinking Smoak is hurt every time they show his perpetually-clenched teeth?

  110. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 9:44 pm

That had me thinking he naws on trees to make his bats, rather than punching one down, like in the commercial.

  111. californiamariner on June 4th, 2012 9:45 pm

Anyone know if Pryor is unavailable tonight after pitching the last two days? I’d like to see him pitching in these close ganes with the lead.

  112. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:45 pm

    ^ hehe Steve

  113. stevemotivateir on June 4th, 2012 9:47 pm

Pryor should be available. I’d kinda like to see him have a go at the Angels.

  114. californiamariner on June 4th, 2012 9:49 pm

So would I, but it looks like Wedge is going Kelley, Wilhelmsen

  115. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:53 pm

Ah, yes, there’s why we have the veteran behind the plate.

  116. WTF_Ms on June 4th, 2012 9:54 pm

Agreed….giving away outs is what he’s good at!

  117. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 9:54 pm

    Olivo’d into a 4-out inning. Right through the 5-hole.

  118. georgmi on June 4th, 2012 9:55 pm

It’s almost like there isn’t any point in complainIng about the awful, awful “catching” going on back there. :/

  119. nvn8vbryce on June 4th, 2012 9:56 pm

I’m not so sure Olivo should be the catcher for a beer league softball team, much less a major league baseball team…

  120. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:57 pm

    Crap, WTH Mascot!?

  121. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 9:57 pm

    This is really happening again.

  122. WTF_Ms on June 4th, 2012 9:57 pm

I miss Ryan at short too:(

  123. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 9:58 pm

Oh man, I was scared when that came off the bat.

  124. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 9:59 pm

Now a DP, please. Sims was worried about a fly ball 40′ short of the fence. What is he watching?

  125. californiamariner on June 4th, 2012 9:59 pm

Who else had their heart skip a beat when Trout hit that

  126. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:00 pm

Mike, you reminded me of a Twin Peaks episode…

    “It is happening again.”

  127. WTF_Ms on June 4th, 2012 10:00 pm

    Frack

  128. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:01 pm

Oh crap on a crap cracker.

    And now… PUJOLS.

  129. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 10:01 pm

    What a crap pitch.

    Walk Pujols!

  130. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:02 pm

The bartender against the tea totaler.

  131. WTF_Ms on June 4th, 2012 10:03 pm

West’s, that reminds me of Full Metal Jacket…”It’s a huge sh*t sandwich, and we’re all gonna have to take a bite.”

  132. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 10:03 pm

This feels a lot like the last time this happened.

Was that a Twin Peaks episode, too – by any chance?

  133. Slats on June 4th, 2012 10:04 pm

    Mariner’s meltdown.

  134. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 10:05 pm

They are going to get what they are asking for. Pujols will come through.

  135. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:05 pm

Hehe, quite apropos to the situation WTF.

Mike, might be – not sure. It would make sense.

  136. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:05 pm

    Okay, exhale everyone!

Happily corrected. Still managed to get two runners into scoring position with that interesting run down. Still have big trouble.

  138. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:07 pm

Crap, I thought it was the ninth for some reason.

At least we have a 2 run lead…

  139. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 10:08 pm

    Phew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am getting too old for this

  140. Slats on June 4th, 2012 10:09 pm

    Stephen Pryor to close?!

  141. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 10:10 pm

Typing it out means the wife doesn’t have to hear me complain about it, though … As she thumbs through the Life Insurance policy papers.

  142. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:11 pm

Good contact by Carp – just not quite enough.

  143. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:11 pm

    hehe Mike.

  144. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 10:12 pm

Brendan Ryan in at SS in the 9th? Please!

  145. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:12 pm

No comment re: the last at bat.

  146. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 10:13 pm

Man, Zunino looks quite a bit like Casper Wells. Maybe they will both be called up around the same time.

  147. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:17 pm

    Oh COME ON.

  148. fargomsfan on June 4th, 2012 10:18 pm

More 8th innings like this is going to me grateful for having spirits at the grocery store

  149. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:20 pm

We may need to start watching the games from the grocery store, fargomsfan.

  150. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:21 pm

    WHOO HOO!! Yeah!!

  151. fargomsfan on June 4th, 2012 10:21 pm

    Bartender serving up a victory!!!

  152. Kazinski on June 4th, 2012 10:21 pm

Wilhelmsen is nails with that curveball.

  153. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:23 pm

When he isn’t nailing a batter with it, anyway. ;-)

  154. Slats on June 4th, 2012 10:24 pm

    Mariners win!

  155. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 10:27 pm

Seager on pace for approximately 48 doubles and 21 homers this season. No real reason to believe he wont end up being close to it at seasons end.

    Sweet!

  156. WalterNeff on June 4th, 2012 10:29 pm

I hope Seager gets an at-bat at the All-Star Game

  157. Westside guy on June 4th, 2012 10:29 pm

Agreed, Mike – Seager certainly seems to be better than many of us expected him to be.

  158. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 10:31 pm

Speaking of the all star game … Who would be the mariners rep if Felix isn’t healthy?

  159. msfanmike on June 4th, 2012 10:35 pm

Many of you likely know, but I just learned that ZUnino’s dad is a pro scout. There is no way there will be signability issues. He is a lock – and soon me thinks. I hope they place him anywhere other than high desert.

  160. Kazinski on June 4th, 2012 10:41 pm

Right now it would be Luetge. 20 appearances 0.00 era. Never mind those FIP xFIP things they don’t count for All-Star stats.

I’m not sure Felix’s stats are All-Star worthy right now.

  161. nvn8vbryce on June 5th, 2012 12:24 am

I was thinking Luetge, with Smoak, Ackley and Ichiro being long shots…

  162. groundzero55 on June 5th, 2012 1:33 am

Luetge is most deserving, followed by Seager. Seager of course won’t get it unless he is taken as an alternate because his competition includes Cabrera and Beltre. Smoak, Ackley and Ichiro won’t happen.
