Game 57, Mariners at Angels
Vargas vs. Santana, 7:05 pm PDT
Gosh, there’s some baseball on today, isn’t there? On the TV and the radio and everything.
RF Ichiro!
2B Ackley
3B Seager
1B Smoak
DH Jaso
LF Carp
C Olivo
CF Saunders
SS Kawasaki
With a right-hander on the mound, the Mariners are going with their lefty-heavy lineup. One might prefer Montero considering he’s had multiple hits in four of his last six games, but Olivo is still around and he hit the dinger yesterday. Let Zunino’s being drafted serve as a reminder that the sun will soon set on the second Miguel Olivo Era.
Smoakamotive won AL Player of the Week. I hope he continues to chug along.

Zunino being drafted -might indicate an extension for Olivo. Who else has the veteran grittiness to show a new backstop the ropes?!
Keep it going Smoak!
Lets go Seattle.
Seager!
Seager might actually be good at baseball.
I hope we can someday trade for his brother.

I swear to god if this ends up being true, I’m going to become a San Diego Padres fan.
haha Henry!
Nice start for the M’s tonight!
Seager!
(slightly late, I know)
Seager baby!
Smoak has it going still.
I will choose to believe Zunino being drafted indicates the team will never, EVER consider extending Olivo.
Although, unlike Henry, if they do I’ll switch loyalties to a less vexing team – maybe Philly.
But… but… San Diego are our most hated rivals! Bud Selid says so!
Carp- the out machine ends the first inning.
Send Carp down.
Are you in the UK or from the UK and rooting stateside, blade runner?
That throw by Ichiro was really, really bad? Was he just hoping to get the guy on first to run and get cut down at second?
But Carp was Ken Wilson’s Pick To Click(TM), Bladerunner!?
There is something viciously mean about Vargas having a really good change-up that makes you lean out, and a cut fastball that he occasionally will throw high and inside.
Carp is out of options. He would have to clear before being sent down. Will be interesting to see if org provides him with the same luxury as Smoak (work out issues at MLB level). He has definitely stunk this year. Looks like he is Trying to “lift” everything and not ever really hitting the ball square.
Msfanmike, I am in the UK. 3:30am over here.
Saunders with a higher average, OBP, SLG %, wOBA and WRC+ than Ackley. Who would have ever thought that possible based on last season.
Carp’s wOBA is just below Ichiro’s, and above Ryan’s and Olivo’s. And his current BABIP is .182, which is utterly impossible to sustain unless you’re Eric Byrnes hitting infield flies.
You are one dedicated mo-FO, blade runner. In what manner are you able to see the game?
Cocaine?
Kawasaki got the ball all the way to the pitcher! We’re so proud of our mascot!
Speaking of KenWilson … He is great on the radio. Isn’t he an obvious full time choice for the gig? Assuming he even wants it.
I’m assuming you’re using mlbtv, bladerunner. Right? I’m certainly curious, as I’ll soon be attempting to follow the games from Sao Paulo.
I just assume it’s Curto. Ken Wilson isn’t going to be able to do it all the time, I thought.
Thanks, I watch the game on vipbox.tv. But over the summer I will be investing in mlb.tv when I can afford it. You make a good point about Saunders, will Guti automatically replace in centre you think??
Funny you said that, Mike. I’ve caught more of the last few games on the radio, than on the TV. I’d like to hear more of him too.
Saunders will likely move to left when Guti’s back, though I would suspect Guti will still get plenty O’ days off.
I know that wasn’t addressed to me, but thought I’d respond anyway
Tagging from first on a fly to the RF corner. Gutsy!
It’s ok stevemotivateir, that is what I thought would happen. Better question, who would be replaced on the roster. Carp, if he still isn’t hitting. Or is it finally the end of Figgins?
That’s the million dollar (9mil) question! Logic says Figgins goes, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they sent Liddi down.
Steve, you may or may not be old enough to remember, but Ken Wilson was Dave Niehaus’ original partner in the booth … For the first few seasons of the franchise. He is very good. Not sure why he ever left, but I think Rizzs replaced him originally.
Two bad babip luck outs for Ichiro today. He hit both balls well.
Does anyone think Ackley might have been rushed to the majors?
Yeah, but I am hoping some logic prevails and they don’t send Liddi down. He is flat out better than Figgins.
How is Ackley not standing on 3B. Bad read on his part. Bad
Mike, I don’t remember actually hearing him back then (though, I did), as I was fairly young, but I did know he was Dave’s partner. There was a lot of talk about that at the time of Dave’s passing.
So was Wells, Bladerunner! Don’t put your money on logic if Wedge has a say in it!
Jaso!
All is well that ends well.
Jaso!
Come on Carp. Square one up
Great play by Albert.
Crap!!!
Wow, great hustle by Carp. Got robbed! At least he got the RBI and stayed out of the DP
That is exactly why I am hoping that Wedge doesn’t have a say. But Liddi has some flexibility (including LF despite it being terrifying whenever he is out there) so hopefully they can’t say Figgins needs to be kept for flexibility.
Nice!
Phew!
Yeah, there really isn’t an excuse for Figgins. It’s just pure stubbornness at this point.

2013 draft positioning?
Kawasaki with the best he can do: Reaches on error.
Drayer suggested (in her blog) there might have been some concern that the Angels or Rangers might pick him up if he were released. I fail to see how that should be a concern. It should be a prayer!
I would kind of like to see Liddi get a chance to play every day in AAA for about a month to see if he can dominate down there and to iron out his xontact rate issues. I think he needs it. The Figgins decision might likely come down to deciding between him and Wells, ultimately … Again. I can’t see the team dumping Figgins until they have cleared through the inter league schedule. I wish they would cut bait, but I doubt they will
He’s not playing enough for that to be an excuse, Henry! But that’s probably the most reasonable excuse.
Yeah, I kinda agree with ya, Mike. I’d rather see Liddi at third or first in Tacoma, than in LF here. Really, I wanna see Wells back up, replacing Figgins.
Ackleys head drops (in elevation) quite a bit when he strides. It’s hard to hit a ball with that type of swing mechanic. I am not sure if it is any more pronounced than when he got called up, but it is sure leading to a lot of ugly AB’s currently.
crap
I heard the TV guys mention that the other day. Something about keeping “still” when he swings.
And he milked Vargas for 7 pitches.

Wade Boggs had a similar swing.
Dave Cameron tweeted something earlier. He said that with the addition of Appel by Pittsburgh, the Pirates have the best trio of pitching prospects in the minor leagues, taking over from the M’s. Thoughts anyone??
… But without the head drop. Boggs kept his head on plane very well.

They’re the Pirates. I’m more concerned about the prospect of Arsenal playing baseball and outscoring the M’s than the Pittsburgh Pirates being competition in the future.
I was shocked Appel went that low. I wouldn’t have been surprised at all if the M’s had snagged him, though I did anticipate them taking Zunino.
More worried about Nationals than Pirates. Strasburg and someday soon (presumably) Giolito. Holy freaking fast ball smoke, Bat Man.
I think that Ackley is now seeing a ton of low and outside pitches, and is starting to dive and lunge out to swing. I would like to see him get a few days off, and work on that.
It’s a Christmas miracle. Olivo!
Yes! Re-sign him now!
Nobody’s gonna bite?
The Angels are going to walk them loaded, cause they know we can’t get anyone in…
This is what I dreamed of… just give us a bases-loaded opportunity with Kawasaki at the plate!
Woo hoo!!!
Oh no! Did Sims REALLY just say that?!
Manager’s rule #413: If you give up an extra base hit to Kawasaki, you get pulled from the game.
Kawasaki with a 3 run double. Don’t get to say that very often!
Joking aside, I’m really happy for him. He really needed a big hit!
Wow, who expected that! In one inning, intentional walk on Carp, Olivo RBI, crowned by a bases-clearing double by the mascot. Is Vargas gonna throw 98 next inning to fully confuse me?
Did i really just watch Olivo and Kawasaki do that back-to-back?
I said it was a Christmas miracle
What did Sims say? I’m watching the Angel’s broadcast.
Sims said “Let the good times roll!”
Do we have to play another home game this season?
Sims has said that any time Kawasaki has gotten a hit this season. Or scored a run. Or stolen a base. Or done a push up. He can’t stop saying it, apparently.
Jumping way back in the thread… sorry, I was away for a bit.
I really hope Wedge is smart when Guti comes back, and he does put Saunders in left most of the time. My fear, though, is Saunders will be relegated to a late-game defensive replacement in left on those days he’s not starting in center. I would not be surprised to see Carp and Liddi manning left field a good bit of the time.
What I say makes no logical sense, I realize – but that’s how little faith I have in Wedge’s ability to judge talent or make intelligent baseball decisions.
I heard him say it once before. I usually try to tune him out!
There’s a surprise…. Morales hitting the ball hard off Mariner pitching.
Kawasaki is leading all Mariner hitters with a .160 WPA so far in this game.
I had to post that, in case it changes later on.
Would be funny if the Angels have trouble seeing the ball because of the smoke
Kawasaki deserves a multi-year extension right now!
I would not be surprised to see Carp and Liddi manning left field a good bit of the time
OTOH, this probably would mean that Figgins would be gone, so… silver lining?
That would be the worst silver lining in the history of silver linings, Paul.
More of a aluminum foil lining.
BTW that sinker of Vargas’ must be very difficult to pick up, given the swings he’s getting at those bouncing in the dirt.
Guess I was just thinking of who they would send out when Guti comes back. Logical choice would be Figgins. My second choice would be Olivo. I guess they could give up on Carp, but I don’t really see that happening now.
If Liddi stays on a downward track, maybe they’d send him out.
I don’t want them to give up on Carp – I just don’t think he should be getting a lot of starts ahead of Condor, given their relative levels of production this year.
And Liddi… should never be out there. Liddi should probably go down, actually.
Hey, maybe the smoke DID have something to do with it, eh?!
Oh boy, League.
Woo hoo – League Time!! Wait, what am I saying?
Steve – that would be funny if the smoke was blinding their own players.
This lead does not feel safe.
I fear Trout is going to be a pain in our collective backsides for many years to come…
I thought that was foul! Way to go Condor!!
Kawasaki looks like a high school kid up there…
That was fair? Really?
Kawasaki is an on-base MACHINE.
(tonight)
Don’t go fishing this time, Ichiro. You need to
Get things rolling. Please start now
I’d laugh if the contracts for Wilson and Pujols ended up making it difficult to re-sign Trout after his arbitration years.
I’d be a little worried that Olivo’s games yesterday and today would relegate Jaso back to the bench, but Jaso is having a pretty good game himself. Maybe by the time Guti comes back Olivo will be traded, that would solve a few problems too.
^Yeah, that would make too much sense!
Kazinski, Jaso did very well while Olivo was out; yet all that seems to have gained him is a little more DH activity.
It’s surreal.
Boy, that Morrow trade sure got us a good 7th-inning guy.
Am I the only one who keeps thinking Smoak is hurt every time they show his perpetually-clenched teeth?
That had me thinking he naws on trees to make his bats, rather than punching one down, like in the commercial.
Anyone know if Pryor is unavailable tonight after pitching the last two days? I’d like to see him pitching in these close ganes with the lead.
^ hehe Steve
Pryor should be available. I’d kinda like to see him have a go at the Angels.
So would I, but it looks like Wedge is going Kelley, Wilhelmsen
Ah, yes, there’s why we have the veteran behind the plate.
Agreed….giving away outs is what he’s good at!
Olivo’d into a 4-out inning. Right through the 5-hole.
It’s almost like there isn’t any point in complainIng about the awful, awful “catching” going on back there. :/
I’m not so sure Olivo should be the catcher for a beer league softball team, much less a major league baseball team…
Crap, WTH Mascot!?
This is really happening again.
I miss Ryan at short too:(
Oh man, I was scared when that came off the bat.
Now a DP, please. Sims was worried about a fly ball 40′ short of the fence. What is he watching?
Who else had their heart skip a beat when Trout hit that
Mike, you reminded me of a Twin Peaks episode…
“It is happening again.”
Frack
Oh crap on a crap cracker.
And now… PUJOLS.
What a crap pitch.
Walk Pujols!
The bartender against the tea totaler.
West’s, that reminds me of Full Metal Jacket…”It’s a huge sh*t sandwich, and we’re all gonna have to take a bite.”
This feels a lot like the last time this happened.
Was that a Twin Peaks episode, too – by any chance?
Mariner’s meltdown.
They are going to get what they are asking for. Pujols will come through.
Hehe, quite apropos to the situation WTF.
Mike, might be – not sure. It would make sense.
Okay, exhale everyone!
Happily corrected. Still managed to get two runners into scoring position with that interesting run down. Still have big trouble.
Crap, I thought it was the ninth for some reason.
At least we have a 2 run lead…
Phew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am getting too old for this
Stephen Pryor to close?!
Typing it out means the wife doesn’t have to hear me complain about it, though … As she thumbs through the Life Insurance policy papers.
Good contact by Carp – just not quite enough.
hehe Mike.
Brendan Ryan in at SS in the 9th? Please!
No comment re: the last at bat.
Man, Zunino looks quite a bit like Casper Wells. Maybe they will both be called up around the same time.
Oh COME ON.
More 8th innings like this is going to me grateful for having spirits at the grocery store
We may need to start watching the games from the grocery store, fargomsfan.
WHOO HOO!! Yeah!!
Bartender serving up a victory!!!
Wilhelmsen is nails with that curveball.
When he isn’t nailing a batter with it, anyway.
Mariners win!
Seager on pace for approximately 48 doubles and 21 homers this season. No real reason to believe he wont end up being close to it at seasons end.
Sweet!
I hope Seager gets an at-bat at the All-Star Game
Agreed, Mike – Seager certainly seems to be better than many of us expected him to be.
Speaking of the all star game … Who would be the mariners rep if Felix isn’t healthy?
Many of you likely know, but I just learned that ZUnino’s dad is a pro scout. There is no way there will be signability issues. He is a lock – and soon me thinks. I hope they place him anywhere other than high desert.
Right now it would be Luetge. 20 appearances 0.00 era. Never mind those FIP xFIP things they don’t count for All-Star stats.
I’m not sure Felix’s stats are All-Star worthy right now.
I was thinking Luetge, with Smoak, Ackley and Ichiro being long shots…
Luetge is most deserving, followed by Seager. Seager of course won’t get it unless he is taken as an alternate because his competition includes Cabrera and Beltre. Smoak, Ackley and Ichiro won’t happen.
