Game 59 – Mariners at Angels

marc w · June 6, 2012 at 6:45 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Hector Noesi vs. Jerome Williams, 7:05pm

To cleanse our collective palate after last night’s drubbing of an M’s flyballing righty, the M’s send up Hector Noesi toAwwww C’mon, M’s.

1: Ichiro (RF)
2: Ackley (2B)
3: Seager (3B)
4: Montero (DH)
5: Smoak (1B)
6: Saunders (CF)
7: Olivo (C)
8: Carp (LF)
9: Ryan (SS)
SP: Hector Noesi

Link of the day? Shannon Drayer’s piece on Felix finally watching himself on video. Sounds like it was sort of a Malkovich-in-his-own-portal thing – disorienting, troubling, harmful to self-confidence. But at least Felix is trying new things, and let’s hope he’s able to correct some of the faults he identified in his next start, which sounds like it’ll be this weekend.

Seems like John Jaso would be a good guy to have in this lineup facing a right-handed pitcher, but I know it’s futile to continue complaining about Olivo showing up so much so I’ll just strike this whole sentence I guess.

Really, this lineup isn’t that bad.

    GO M’S!

  2. Slats on June 6th, 2012 6:55 pm

Good to see some veteran presence in the line up!

  3. The Nickster on June 6th, 2012 7:00 pm

Last game on the road… come on, Ms, we want 21 runs! Ok, I’ll settle for high single digits. Just score, ok? OK!

  4. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 7:01 pm

Just read Drayer’s piece… as painful as it is to not see Felix pitch, I’d just as soon the team take every precaution with the guy – especially in a year like this. We’re not going to the playoffs, so let’s be sure we give our big hoss every opportunity to be healthy for the year we DO make the playoffs.

After all, he’s one of the few guys on the current roster that’s pretty much guaranteed to be on future rosters as well (for as long as he’s willing).

  5. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 7:05 pm

Just for laughs, I’d love to hear a prank call, Z ringing Cashman, asking what he’s willing to give for Felix, and playing dumb about the back issue.

  6. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 7:07 pm

Maybe you all already know about this, but:

Why Jerome Williams uses a pink glove

  7. MX on June 6th, 2012 7:08 pm

I can’t remember ichiro’s last hit. Please wake up, ichiro!

  8. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 7:08 pm

I guess so much for making the pitcher work.

  9. greentunic on June 6th, 2012 7:09 pm

Is it just me or does Ackley ground out to second way too much not to be concerned?

  10. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 7:18 pm

Big booboo by Trout there. His youth showed on that play.

  11. Slats on June 6th, 2012 7:22 pm

    Jesus!

  12. Slats on June 6th, 2012 7:25 pm

    Another hit for Condor.

  13. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 7:25 pm

Maybe they could use Trout’s goof for a new acting commercial?

  14. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 7:25 pm

    Saunders!

  15. Kyle Miller on June 6th, 2012 7:26 pm

Runners on 1st and 2nd, 1 out. Here comes Olivo.

    Fate is cruel sometimes.

  16. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 7:27 pm

Whew, a strike out. Better than GIDP.

  17. Kyle Miller on June 6th, 2012 7:28 pm

At least we got that going for us.

  18. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 7:28 pm

Man, Saunders is really in the zone right now.

  19. Kyle Miller on June 6th, 2012 7:29 pm

    CARP!

  20. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 7:29 pm

    Carp comes through!

  21. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 7:30 pm

Carp needs to heat up. That was a good AB.

  22. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 7:30 pm

What is it the veterans do for the team, again?

I ask because I’m not seeing it right now.

  23. nickman66 on June 6th, 2012 7:31 pm

They have good jokes and impressions in the clubhouse?!

  24. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 7:32 pm

Carp hit it about the only place that’d give Montero enough time to score from second. :-D

    And Saunders almost caught him.

  25. Slats on June 6th, 2012 7:39 pm

WOW Carp, did you even look?

  26. Kyle Miller on June 6th, 2012 7:39 pm

    Carp in LF, everyone.

  27. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 7:40 pm

    Oh man.

  28. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 7:41 pm

Geez…. is Seager aware that he’s the third baseman tonight? I’m still shocked the Angels were willing to test the arm of Carp.

  29. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 7:41 pm

Wow….if he heats up the bat, his defense is OPPOSITE??? That was almost Raul Ibanez-esque.

  30. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 7:42 pm

Veterans wouldn’t have made those mistakes…

    ;-)

  31. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 7:42 pm

Honestly, that was probably more Seager’s fault. He should have known that throw wasn’t going to come home.

  32. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 7:43 pm

Are you suggesting Figgins should have been at third or in left, Westy?!

  33. Zero Gravitas on June 6th, 2012 7:43 pm

Noesi’s officially starting to bug me. That lead lasted what, 30 seconds?

  34. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 7:44 pm

I’m surprised we HAD a lead.

  35. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 7:45 pm

Oh, I guess Figgins is technically a “veteran”.

I loved in the replay how Ryan just watches the ball sailing over his head, unaware it’s heading to nobody…

  36. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 7:46 pm

That was a nice play by Kendrick.

  37. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 7:48 pm

Westy, Ryan is considered a “veteran” :(

And that was a “veteran” strike out!

  38. Slats on June 6th, 2012 7:52 pm

Sims just goes vote often and vote often. LOL

  39. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 7:55 pm

Ryan and Olivo actually both strike out slightly less often than Saunders does. It just FEELS like they strike out all the time, I guess.

Their on-base percentages don’t compare, though – although Ryan does continue to take walks on occasion.

  40. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 7:55 pm

Olivo to Noesi: “If you throw a strike, he’ll nail it. If you throw it in the dirt, I’ll miss it. You’re pretty much screwed”.

  41. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 7:56 pm

    Westy, they strike out worse!

  42. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 7:57 pm

Seriously, why is John Jaso not in there?

  43. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 7:58 pm

By “worse” do you mean “in a stupider manner”, Steve? I’d certainly agree with that! ;-)

  44. nickman66 on June 6th, 2012 7:58 pm

    Seriously? Another 0-2 meatball? Oye.

  45. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 7:58 pm

Yeah, gotta love our pitching staff lately.

  46. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 7:59 pm

    Note to Mariner’s pitching coaches:

Good hitting teams will hit the meat ball a mile.

Print and post in the dugout, and bull pen please.

  47. nickman66 on June 6th, 2012 7:59 pm

He hit his spot. Unfortunately his spot was right down the middle.

  48. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 8:00 pm

And Blowers even said that Olivo has been CALLING for that pitch??? Refer to my username.

  49. Kyle Miller on June 6th, 2012 8:00 pm

Noesi needs to keep those fastballs down.

  50. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:00 pm

    YES, Westy!

  51. greentunic on June 6th, 2012 8:01 pm

    Wow Noesi. Stop beaing terrible!!!

  52. Zero Gravitas on June 6th, 2012 8:01 pm

We were totally winning this game just a few minutes ago

  53. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:02 pm

There is no excuse for giving up repeated home runs in an 0-2 count. It’s just stupid. Noesi is stupid for throwing a strike. Olivo is more stupid for letting him do it. If he was a veteran leader he would be jumping all over his stupid ass. So would Wedge.

    Dumbfuckery all around.

  54. eponymous coward on June 6th, 2012 8:02 pm

    Ladies and gentlemen, Hector Noesi.

  55. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 8:02 pm

I’m going to have to go ahead and blame Olivo…he’s a convenient place to lay the blame.

  56. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:04 pm

I kind of expected this from Noesi tonight. Short on rest, asked to shut-down a tough offense… not a huge surprise at all.

  57. Slats on June 6th, 2012 8:04 pm

WOW now Sims is talking about NHL.

  58. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:05 pm

Morales has been killin’ us this year. Intentional walks don’t seem like a bad idea.

  59. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 8:05 pm

Well, given last nights debacle, Wedge will let him pitch his way out. He left Beavan in with a 4-1 deficit.

  60. Slats on June 6th, 2012 8:06 pm

    Condor once again!

  61. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:06 pm

Man, I know Condor will regress on BABIP but – I’m enjoying watching him hit right now!

  62. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:06 pm

    Michael freakin Saunders!!! Give it
Up for the teams leading hitter.

  63. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:07 pm

The good new is, it’s still early, and only down 2 runs.

Seriously, Saunders is on his way to player of the week!

  64. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:07 pm

Hey Mike, stop beating around the bush. Tell us how you REALLY feel!

  65. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 8:07 pm

This is why I argue for “batting order matters”…

Saunders is on base AGAIN, and Olivo will strand him.

  66. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:07 pm

Maybe just go ahead and give him the award now?!

  67. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:09 pm

Westy, just in case he ends the year at .270 or above – how best is a shoe cooked? I said I would eat my shoe if he hit .270 this year. With all of your “life experiences” I figure you might know the answer.

  68. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:09 pm

    Miguel Olivo, ladies and gentlemen!

  69. Slats on June 6th, 2012 8:09 pm

    Olivo blows.

  70. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:09 pm

2-0 count, runner in scoring position, and he watches one go right down the middle. How is it he can resist swinging on a hitters count, yet swing at crap, when in the hole?

  71. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:10 pm

Hey I’m not that much older than you Mike!!

    Um… are we talking leather, canvas,…? ;-)

  72. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 8:11 pm

Don’t worry Mike, they are making shoes tasty these days!

  73. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:11 pm

Re: 0-2 pitch: my high school coach would throw a combo Knute Rockne Bobby Knight tirade if our pitchers threw anything approximating a strike. Coach was right.

  74. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:11 pm

Mike, I don’t know what Westy will say, but if I were to rub it in, I’d just say make sure you step in dog crap first :P

  75. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:14 pm

I think I might have to go with my baby shoe. My mom still has it somewhere. Moms can never part with that stuff. I think it was leather. I might try deep frying it in chocolate sauce. Any objections?

  76. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:16 pm

I am not a welcher.I will eat some kind of shoe if Saunders ends up hitting .270 this season. There is a minor need presently for me to start some planning in that regard.

  77. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 8:16 pm

Let’s not eat our shoes before the season is over…

  78. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:16 pm

Hopefully she didn’t have it bronzed, Mike.

I don’t want Saunders to end the season leading the team in average, simply because that’ll mean several other guys underachieved.

  79. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:18 pm

You could probably buy a hemp shoe, shred it, and make a soup of it.

  80. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:19 pm

What if Saunders finishes hitting .315 Westy?

  81. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:21 pm

On my way home tonight, I heard (unfortunately) a little of Bob & Groz. They were discussing Ichiro. To describe Groz’s rambling in a single word: retarded.

  82. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:23 pm

That would be cool, Steve, but I’ll be happy if he finishes above .250 – even that would be so much better than any of us expected of him at this point.

  83. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 8:24 pm

If you’re too stupid to be retarded, you’re just a tard…and that’s what I assign to Bob AND Groz.

  84. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:24 pm

I swear most sports talk radio hosts are basically barstool prognosticators who’ve just happened to get a mic shoved in front of them.

  85. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:25 pm

    haha, WTF

  86. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:25 pm

I think my parents were a little light on funds at that time to be bronzing anything, but yeah … I will double check on that. Maybe I should fo double or nothing on my own self inflicted honor aysten bet, now.

In all seriousness if Saunders ends up above .250 – he had a good year. I am secretly rooting for .269. Shhhh

  87. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:27 pm

Coming out of spring, I was hopeful (and fairly confident) Saunders would hit .250. He’s exceeded my expectations to this point, for the most part.

  88. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:28 pm

Did Ichiro get a hit? I was checking out the former Sonics game.

  89. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:29 pm

Not sure if it was ruled an error or not. Probably an error.

  90. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:29 pm

Bad break, there – but Ackley needed a hit any kind of way.

    Come on Seags!

  91. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:29 pm

    Bad luck there!

  92. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:29 pm

    Seager!!

  93. Slats on June 6th, 2012 8:30 pm

    Seager!

    Mr Double!

  95. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 8:30 pm

  96. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:30 pm

    SEAGER!

  97. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:31 pm

That was weird. Trumbo wasn’t short or high, he missed wide!

  98. Slats on June 6th, 2012 8:32 pm

    Seattle into NBA Finals.

  99. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:32 pm

Seager and Saunders having a doubles competition this season.

And Monty keeps the inning alive…

  100. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:32 pm

OKC is going to the Finals. Mixed feelings, anyone? Or are your feelings pure?

  101. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:33 pm

I would think Edgar probably enjoys seeing the team hitting doubles again.

  102. Kyle Miller on June 6th, 2012 8:33 pm

My feelings are pure. OKC can die in a fire.

  103. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:34 pm

I haven’t paid attention to OKC at all since they left, to be honest.

  104. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:34 pm

    @Mike

Hate Bennett, hate Stern, no feelings for the team, or the NBA.

  105. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:34 pm

    That was GREAT Kyle!

  106. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:35 pm

Is this pink glove thing a breast cancer awareness related item? Does anybody know this answer … Since nobody has any shoe recipes, I figured I would ask an easier question.

  107. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:36 pm

I linked to a story at the top of the thread – the pink glove is in memory of his mother, who died from cancer.

  108. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:36 pm

I miss the Sonics, too – but you know a team will be back and you know it won’t be related to the NBA expanding.

  109. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:37 pm

I was trying to learn more about Williams in general and happened to find that.

  110. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:38 pm

I’m more excited about Hockey possibly coming here.

  111. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:38 pm

    Roger that, Westy. Makes sense.

    I missed your link linkage.

  112. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 8:39 pm

I like the arena dude. He’s a fan of pro sports, and has the money to get it done without tax payer money.

  113. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:40 pm

I shouldn’t care either way about the NBA or NHL, my ass is Brazil-bound fairly soon. It’s all football there, then some more football, and then even MORE football. Not much of a baseball community of all.

  114. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:44 pm

    CRAP.

  115. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:44 pm

I’m surprised Noesi’s lasted this long. He’s gotta get pulled soon.

  116. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:44 pm

    Frack!!!

  117. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:45 pm

    PLEASE pull Noesi, Wedge.

    THANK you.

  118. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 8:47 pm

Man, Iwakuma can’t even get into a long relief appearance anymore.

  119. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 8:48 pm

Brazil?? Did you lose a bet? Are you an oil baron? Family matters? Exchange student? MLB Scout? Tug boat Captain? Howard Schultz looking for safe haven? Seeking shoe cooking recipes? Other?

  120. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 8:48 pm

Love it when Pujols doesn’t come through…

  121. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 8:51 pm

Haha Mike! Actually, my lady is Brazilian and… we’re opening a vegan bakery/restaurant in Sao Paulo, so yes, we could give you a unique shoe recipe! Would love to be an MLB scout. Not going to happen there though!

  125. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 8:55 pm

Get a dish … Another dish … One that hangs on the roof of the house

    What the fuck, Saunders!

  132. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 8:59 pm

Low risk, high reward, Westy. I’m comfortable there, too. It cost me my house here, but it’s worth it. Also get to ditch a dead-end job with incompetent managers, so that’s the bonus!

  133. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:00 pm

I used to work with people in Brasil. Went to Rio for a couple of weeks once for work.

I tried to learn a little Portuguese. I failed miserably. I was unable to make myself understood to hotel clerks when all I was saying was the digits in my room number.

    Or pão de quiejo-sapato

  139. r-gordon-7 on June 6th, 2012 9:01 pm

As for the Sonics/Thunder… just two points:

    1. It’s basketball. So, do we really care?

    2. Let their fans enjoy it. Even if they win it all, at the end of the day, we live here and they’re still in Oklahoma. Anybody here wanna’ trade places? Didn’t think so.

  140. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 9:01 pm

Hey Ryan is up. Batting order sure does seem to matter when olivo and Ryan are in it

  146. caldog on June 6th, 2012 9:04 pm

    wow ichiro came thru

  147. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 9:04 pm

Oh snap….Ichiro clutch it. He was 0-16 since the two homers, this was good.

  148. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:04 pm

    Take that, bob & groz!

  149. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 9:06 pm

Bailing on a dead end job, Steve? I was unaware there was any ither kind. And Good for you.

  150. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:07 pm

I have to wonder if the studies about batting order took into account the possibility that a lineup might have two sub-.200 hitters in it. :-D

  151. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:07 pm

haha, Portuguese is very different than Spanish, Mike. But what I said translates to “bread of cheese”. But for you, I said “bread of shoe”. Pao de queijo is probably the single most popular food unique to Brasil. Good stuff! We make a version with potato that’s every bit as good.

  152. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:09 pm

All right, bases loaded for Seager!

  153. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:10 pm

    Seager!!

  154. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:10 pm

    Seager!!!

  155. Slats on June 6th, 2012 9:11 pm

Seager puts the M’s in front!

  156. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 9:11 pm

    That dude is clutch.

  157. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:11 pm

Kyle maybe wants us to realize Saunders isn’t the only young guy hitting right now…

  158. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:12 pm

I think the point is that who is in the lineup is more important than the order.

It would be hard to hide both Olivo and Ryan in the same lineup regardless of where you put them.

  159. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 9:14 pm

    Portuguese, huh?

George Costanza learned it in less than a day.

The only thing I know about Brazil is that the capital is Brazilia. My Spanish teacher in 1978 made us memorize all the capitals in south America

    Bolivia: La Paz

    Ecuador: Quito

    Etc etc

  160. Catherwood on June 6th, 2012 9:15 pm

Yee! That was an ugly swing.

  161. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:15 pm

Angie Mentink once talked about how, in college softball, you could technically DH for any player – not just the pitcher.

Maybe we need to push for adoption of that rule in the AL.

  162. justinh on June 6th, 2012 9:16 pm

Seager better get a new cup, because the guy has huge balls!!! I’m getting a Seager jersey this home stand. Was gonna wait, but I just love the guy too much to wait.

  163. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:16 pm

I thought that was the rule?

  164. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:17 pm

That pitch would be a candidate for Jeff’s worst of the week article.

  165. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:19 pm

Paul, the Portuguese spoken in Rio is weird, so don’t feel bad! They make things harder than they need to be. It’s kind of a joke throughout the rest of Brasil, that people from Rio have their own language. The way they pronounce “t” is “d” is completely ridiculous.

Mike, Brasilia is the capitol, but Sao Paulo is by far the largest city, and the economical capitol. And where I will be;)

  166. Kyle Miller on June 6th, 2012 9:20 pm

    SEAGERRRRR!!!!

  167. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:20 pm

damn, I hope my Portuguese is better than my English. Meant to say the way they pronounce “t” AND “d” in Rio, is ridiculous.

  168. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:21 pm

Kyle Seager advanced on a wild pitch to 2B.

Kyle Seager singled to center (Grounder). Mike Carp scored. Ichiro Suzuki scored. Dustin Ackley advanced to 2B.

The play by play on Fangraphs makes it sound like Ackley vanished.

  169. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 9:22 pm

Needed a little faster runner, there

Also, High School rules used to allow for the DH to hit for anyone. high school changea their rulea so often, that i do not know if that rule atill applies. I think the same held true for college, but can’t remember. That is right around the time that pitchers just became strictly pitchers and there was usually a few much better bats on the bench than most pitchers could provide. Plus, they just stopped working on it at that point. Kinda like Brendan Ryan stopped a couple years ago.

  170. justinh on June 6th, 2012 9:24 pm

The one move JZ made that irks me is the Brandon Morrow deal. That was the one deal I was pissed we made during his tenure. Even though it hasn’t worked out, I thought the Figgins deal was a good move at the time.

Watching a few innings pitched by Morrow, he has really developed into a pitcher. If it was part of the Cliff Lee deal, I would understand. I love Zdurienzik more than anyone but that move was crazy then and much worse now.

Oh well, we still have TMAC, the most important person in the organization and I still love JZ.

  171. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:25 pm

Crap. Smoak shouldn’t have charged on that.

  172. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:25 pm

Olivo really is a bad catcher. The only things he does good is throw, and once in awhile hit a homer. He really stinks at everything else.

  173. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 9:25 pm

Yeah, I am making my I-phone look like it can’t spell, tonight. No excuses. Not drinking. Just having an off night and I can’t find my cheaters. I am sure you can relate, Westy.

  174. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:25 pm

They might not have caught him, but really Kelly should’ve stayed out of the way.

  175. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:26 pm

    Hehe Mike.

  176. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:27 pm

    Hey! Pryor sighting!

  177. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:28 pm

Why didn’t Olivo call them off? The catcher should be in charge there. And, isn’t he a “veteran”?

  178. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 9:29 pm

Unfortunately, Steve … We were not quizzed on “population” – only Capitals. But good for you, anyway.

  179. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:29 pm

    @Justin

The deal for League wouldn’t have been as bad, if they had sold high on him last year.

  180. californiamariner on June 6th, 2012 9:29 pm

    Pryor!

  181. Slats on June 6th, 2012 9:29 pm

  184. Slats on June 6th, 2012 9:30 pm

    Thanks Izzy! LOL

  185. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:31 pm

You’re absolutely right Paul, regarding Olivo.

Nice DP to end the inning!

  186. justinh on June 6th, 2012 9:31 pm

Wooo Hooo!!! Does it make me gay if I find Pryor kinda sexy after that play?

  187. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:31 pm

    Nice snag by Pryor there!!

  188. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 9:31 pm

Olivo is only in charge of being shitty. And, he is the master of it.

You are right though … He has to take charge, there

Fucking sweet DP. Game saver! Great footwork. Now get a gad damn hit once in a while.

  189. Catherwood on June 6th, 2012 9:31 pm

Man, when’s the last time you saw a PITCHER stretching for that relay to first like that? The kid’s got a lot of moxie.

  190. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:32 pm

Justin, in the words of George Costanza: “It doesn’t help”.

    ;-)

  191. justinh on June 6th, 2012 9:34 pm

    @steve

Totally agree, we should have dealt League last year. I really hope he gets back on track and finds the splitty. When a guy has a good splitty going (i.e. Norm Charlton in ’95) I think it’s the best pitch in baseball. It was great having Dan Wilson behind the dish because that guy could block a dump truck.

  192. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:35 pm

    Boo, Saunders! BOO!!

  193. justinh on June 6th, 2012 9:35 pm

    Westy,

    Lol!

  194. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:36 pm

Smoak made a nice stop and throw to start that DP, and i think that was Ryan who turned it, pretty amazing.

  195. justinh on June 6th, 2012 9:39 pm

I love the chemistry on this team. And Pryor is the type of guy we need who can fire you up. I think he needs to take a page from Trevor Hoffman and play Hell’s Bell’s. We haven’t had a pitcher since Randy who could just fire you up sitting in the stands. And, Pryor is kinda sexy.

  196. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:39 pm

Oh this could be something – Pryor versus Pujols.

  197. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:40 pm

Oh man, I thought that was gone!

  198. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:40 pm

Crap, it would have been really funny if they had thrown Pujols out at second.

  199. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:41 pm

That was a weak throw by Carp.

  200. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:42 pm

Unfortunately, the M’s don’t have a good fielder to put in left.

  201. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:42 pm

How was that a strong throw? It bounced at least twice.

  202. justinh on June 6th, 2012 9:42 pm

Yeah that was not a great throw. He didn’t really have his momentum moving forward either.

  203. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:44 pm

    NICE!!

  204. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:44 pm

    We got out of it!

  205. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:45 pm

When they walked Trumbo, the Angels had a 48.4% chance of winning.

After the double play, it is 22.4%.

  206. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 9:45 pm

Two Costanza references in one thread. Yay old dudes!

  207. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:46 pm

    Seinfeld is timeless.

  208. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:48 pm

That last Costanza reference made by Westy, reminded me of the male-massage episode. So funny!

  209. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:48 pm

Today is hula girl at the Angel’s park. The announcers are wondering if the rally monkey could have a skirt.

  210. justinh on June 6th, 2012 9:49 pm

My friend said he was watching MLB network today and they were talking about various clubs. Gammons and someone else both said they have heard from many executives and scouts that the Mariners are looking like the next TB Rays, but will have money to spend as well.

  211. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:50 pm

Oh, yeah, I remember that one Steve – “I think it moved”. hehehe

  212. Slats on June 6th, 2012 9:50 pm

    ICHIRO!!!!

  213. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:50 pm

Too bad Ichiro is such a bad hitter, isn’t it?

  214. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:50 pm

    ICHIRO!!!!!!!!

  215. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 9:51 pm

    Good bye!

Hey bob and Groz – eat it

  216. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:51 pm

Kawasaki in the dugout looks happier than Ichiro.

  217. justinh on June 6th, 2012 9:51 pm

Ichiro! Great to see him get going.

  218. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:51 pm

  219. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 9:51 pm

  220. georgmi on June 6th, 2012 9:52 pm

Move him back to the three hole!

  221. justinh on June 6th, 2012 9:52 pm

With all the power he is displaying, we should move Ichiro to the three hole…

  222. nvn8vbryce on June 6th, 2012 9:53 pm

Are my eyes broken or did Ichiro hit another homer?

  223. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:54 pm

Maybe there’s something wrong with Ackley, Westy? He does have good speed normally.

  224. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:55 pm

I didn’t mean to imply he was slow – just that he didn’t really get into a stride the way, say, Saunders or Ichiro does.

  225. justinh on June 6th, 2012 9:55 pm

    @Westy

Ackley has great quickness. I think that was a messed up view because they really had no chance, but I thought the same thing that he didn’t look like he was flying. And Ackley can fly!

  226. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 9:55 pm

Steve, it’s the end of a long road trip. Some people don’t travel well? I think he looks ok.

  227. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:55 pm

Ackley is lucky that was ball 4 – looked like he slipped and was probably a sitting duck.

  228. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:55 pm

Looked like Ackley slipped when he broke for second. Lucky it was ball 4.

  229. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:55 pm

Ah, I missed the play. I missed Ichiro’s shot too.

  230. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:56 pm

Haha, great minds and all that, Paul.

  231. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 9:56 pm

Ackley is not and has never been a burner. He has good, not great speed. He cuts the bases very very well and that helps a ton!

  232. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 9:57 pm

If the Mariners are going to be the Rays of the AL West, they are going to have to find a couple of good hitting outfielders in the next year or two.

  233. justinh on June 6th, 2012 9:58 pm

The only problem with 3 1/2 hour games is listening to Sims for another half hour. Seriously I’d rather listen to Mike Blowers just talk to himself. Sims makes Fairly seem like Vin Scully.

  234. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 9:58 pm

I wonder who’s the fastest runner on the club now. I might put my money on Saunders.

  235. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 9:58 pm

Yeah, could’ve been the angle Justin.

  236. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 9:59 pm

Figgy sighting! Time to build that trade value!

  237. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 10:00 pm

Totally agree, Paul. With Guti’s issues, and the possibility of Ichiro saying farewell, we could have two glaring holes, very quickly.

  238. justinh on June 6th, 2012 10:00 pm

    @msfanmike

That is what I meant in saying Ackley is very quick. Saunders would beat Ackley in a 40 yard dash but Ackley would be ahead after the first 20 yards. Ackley is a 65/70 on the base paths.

  239. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 10:00 pm

Might indeed be Condor, Steve. He’s always been fast – but, up until this year, it was like they said about Brian Hunter: “You can’t steal first base”.

  240. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 10:01 pm

Yes – Saunders definitely in a straight 60 or 100 yard dash. He would crush Figgins and lap Montero … And that is tough to do in a straight race.

  241. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 10:03 pm

    Nice job by League.

  242. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 10:03 pm

So… do they bring League back out for the ninth?

  243. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 10:04 pm

League is back – obviously … So trade him!!!

    Tonight.

  244. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 10:04 pm

Totally agree, Paul. With Guti’s issues, and the possibility of Ichiro saying farewell, we could have two glaring holes, very quickly.

I was going to say three, but Saunders really stepped up. I’m not sold on Carp as a long term solution, or Liddi. Wells would make a good 4th, or a platoon partner.

  245. justinh on June 6th, 2012 10:05 pm

I said at the beginning of the year, I think Saunders is a future all-star if he can hit the way he was in Spring Training. Well, over 1/3 of the way through, Saunders is looking pretty damn good. I know we will have two glaring holes, but we can move Ackley to the OF and put Seager at 2nd if we want to sign a 3B, or we can let it be and sign an OF. This is the year where we make a big splash in the offseason and grab a bat.

  246. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 10:06 pm

Man, who would’ve thought ROOT would ever do a video montage of Saunders hitting?!

  247. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 10:06 pm

I am thinking the bartender is coming out for the ninth. League is usually pretty decent until it matters most. That was the rap on him when he was in Toronto and he has mostly lived up to his billing.

  248. justinh on June 6th, 2012 10:06 pm

Saunders has all the tools and he is finally hitting. I was kind of frustrated when Guti went down, but Saunders is going to be a future all-star if he keeps this up.

  249. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 10:07 pm

My thoughts exactly, Paul. Not sold on Carp, Liddi isn’t even in the discussion. Saunders has been a very pleasant surprise. I’ve seen Wells as the 4th outfielder.

  250. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 10:10 pm

I doubt Ackley goes to the outfield. He’s been good at second and Seager has fit-in pretty well at third. Kind of an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” kind of thing.

  251. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 10:11 pm

I don’t understand Wedge’s thought process, obviously (Liddi in left?) – but Carp hasn’t really made a case this year for playing every day. If he doesn’t pick it up soon, I would think we’ll see Saunders-Guti-Ichiro most of the time once Guti is back.

  252. Paul B on June 6th, 2012 10:12 pm

We’d have to see those 3 get most of the time, unless Wedge has his favorite toy syndrome (e.g., Liddi, Peguero, Olivo).

  253. WTF_Ms on June 6th, 2012 10:12 pm

If Gutierrez stays healthy, and his bat shows up, we’ll have a great outfield.

  254. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 10:14 pm

    Mike called it.

  255. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 10:14 pm

^ no doubt … In regard to your outfield of the near future projection

  256. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 10:16 pm

    Tom Wilhelmensensnensen.

I think I’ll stick with “bartender”.

  257. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 10:17 pm

I worry that Paul is right, though, with regards to what passes as Wedge’s thought process.

  258. stevemotivateir on June 6th, 2012 10:17 pm

I would be really happy if Guti came back healthy and hittin’ well. I just don’t think that’s likely. Not this year anyway.

  259. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 10:18 pm

    Getting late for you, Westy?

  260. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 10:20 pm

  263. Westside guy on June 6th, 2012 10:21 pm

Ichiro’s homer may be very important…

  264. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 10:21 pm

  275. msfanmike on June 6th, 2012 10:32 pm

  277. greentunic on June 6th, 2012 10:56 pm

I’ll bet the M’s follow this blog closely. I’d imagine other teams wouldn’t but since this is a more evidence-developed blog, I wouldn’t be terribly surprised.

Not all smart baseball people work for an MLB team.

  278. Kazinski on June 6th, 2012 11:31 pm

The M’s have played 22 games and home so far, and 37 on the road, it will be interesting to see what happens when the catch up on their home games. Will their runs scored go back down to their comfort zone? Or will they win a few more games at home and inch their way back to respectability.

  279. samregens on June 6th, 2012 11:46 pm

Wedge is really dragging this team down.

Beavan and Noesi are pitching pretty badly (and deservedly so, i.e. not really much bad luck involved for those two). That’s 40% of the starting rotation.

Wedge, please get over the ill-conceived dislike, the preconceived bad notions, or whatever the heck your freaking problem is.

And, at the receiving end – Wedge is choosing to have Olivo catch most of the time rather than Jaso. That means he’s giving up 210 points of OPS from the catcher position, every frigging game – and it’s not like Olivo is making up for that with his “stellar” defense…

We could just have one gaping hole on offense; but Wedge is choosing to include a second one.

OK, I got the high single-digit runs I asked for, and we got the W! Very nice come from behind win. This teams is starting to show some intestinal fortitude. Now we need to bring the momentum home and win a few series. Be nice to start with this weekend…

I was referring (specifically) to the notion of other “teams management reading this” and becoming interested in the “nice package” deal of Figgins/Olivo/League.

Of course the blog has value, but no “other teams management” is going to be fooled into believing the triumvirate of terrible would be a good trade opportunity. If they read the blog (and understand the analysis and stats used), they would conclude the opposite, correct?

I suppose a fake blog could be created which would pump up the triumvirates virtues instead of pointing out their glaring weaknesses, but I believe the team already has a website.
