Game 80, Red Sox at Mariners
Ramirez Furbush vs. Beckett, 7:10 pm.
Posting late enough that Ramirez has been removed early, apparently due to some kind of injury. I know Blake Beavan is still hanging around in Tacoma, but with Millwood coming up lame every other start as well, this team can’t really afford to lose guys out of the rotation. There may be sentiment to go ahead and call Hultzen up, but though he’s arguably already as good as the middling guys behind Felix, so far in Tacoma he’s showing there’s no reason to rush him.
RF-L Ichiro
CF-R Wells
3B-L Seager
DH-L Jaso
1B-B Smoak
2B-L Ackley
C-R Olivo
LF-B Figgins

Condor must still be sick – we’re being treated to Figgins in left again.
Westy, I’d rather be treated to poison ivy than Figgins, thank you very much…
Dave Sims’ fedora is a thing of beauty.
Another one? Oh good golly.
Crap, are you kidding me?! Not Ramirez. Take Figgins, take Olivo, maybe even Noesi, but not Ramirez! Geez.
If anyone is curious, the answer to their trivia, is 8. Ortiz has 399. Would be funny if he hit one before they revealed the answer. They didn’t list 9 as a choice.
Nice job Charlie.
I thought Ramirez quickly pointed to his forearm after Griffin arrived at the mound. If he did, that’s a bad sign.
Hope that’s not the case.
When it rains, it pours.
Ichiro was so close to a triple. Damn you, Cody Ross!
SO close.
I did not know Ross was capable of a play like that.
Seager was probably just telling Furbush not to hurt himself.
I also did not known Ross could hit a ball 450′ to LF – until yesterday.
Ross has taught me more than I wanted to know – over the past two days.
I thought it was silly when the Mariners brought up Delabar after Guti’s injury – I’ve changed my mind now.
Even my daughter thought Langston looked like David Bowie.
My wife thought he was a flat-chested woman! hehe
Thanks very much for posting the new thread Mike! And for moving the existing posts over.
Ditto. Hopefully it was just a cramp and not anything worse.
Haha, I made the Bowie comparison too! A younger version of course. But he also screams ‘California’.
Wells, it’s simply not a good time to start your BABIP regression!
Hehe, Steve – he really does look like a “Californian” doesn’t he?
Yes, he certainly does! I always liked Langston. I remember seeing him pitch in the King Dome.
Did I miss the signing of Cy Young with the Red Sox, or is our offense really this inept?
Hey they’ve read Dave’s FanGraphs piece! And acknowledged the fact!
Shout out from Dave Sims to FanGraphs.
Root just used BABIP.
I remember Langston pitching for us – and, later, losing to us in that all-or-nothing game.
You know, they didn’t explain BABIP this time (yet?) – but I’ve appreciated when Blowers has apparently done his homework and tried to explain advanced stats like UZR. Not every broadcast team would bother.
That’s another reason to like him!
Pujols has 457 homers at age 32 – I wonder if he’ll eventually challenge Bonds?
That pitch hit Miggy in a real bad spot.
Rotating threads. Technology!
Fangraphs getting a lot of kudos from ROOT tonight.
What?! They’re wrong!
Alex Rodriguez 642
Jim Thome 609
Manny Ramirez 555
Chipper Jones 460
Albert Pujols 457
Vladimir Guerrero 449
Jason Giambi 429
Andruw Jones 427
Paul Konerko 410
Unless they’re considering Ramirez and Guerro inactive. But the funny thing is, they included Ortiz, who’s one short at 399.
Langston reminds me of Bowie, too … But it doesn’t end there. He looks like a cross between John Denver, David Bowie and Bruce Jenner with some Pere Carroll thrown in for good measure – IMO
He sure was a good pitcher though.
They didn’t mention Vlad, but Sims did say they weren’t counting Manny since he’s not currently active.
You know it’s getting really bad when this hard core Ms fan is starting to root for the inept offense to continue. How low can you go? How about getting a perfect game AND a no-hitter thrown against you in your park in a half-season?
It still doesn’t make sense, because even without Manny, it’s 8. With Ortiz (though he shouldn’t be on there) it’s 9.
Yes, the two you mentioned are “inactive” technically.
And, Ortiz was close enough to mention or not mention … All depending on how one counts to 7 … I guess ???
Well, if you count Ortiz, then it is 8!
They missed somebody. As far as I know, everyone else is active.
That a way, Smoaky!
Damn, gotta roll. Hope they score some runs tonight. Wont hold my breath.
Miggy breaks up the no-no!
(why is every game lately a potential no hitter?)
Hopefully the “take away” message for the org (in regard to the Fangraphs data quoted) is that any fence line changes they may be considering – would benefit the visiting team as much if not more – than it would benefit the Mariners.
In other words: no drastic changes, please. No need for it! No changes at all would be even better. IMO
Dammit. Olivo lets me down once again.
I know Ortiz would make 8, but he sits at 399 – and the question was 400 and above.
Ask Professor of Professional Hitting, Dr. Mendoza about something called the Mendoza Line, and how the Mariners got a cut-rate subscription for most of their hitters…
The list confused me too, because I counted eight names on it, but the total HRs hit (to the right of the names) revealed the true answer to the riddle.
To clarify, Manny and Vlad are not “active”, and Ortiz only has 399 Home Runs. 7 Active Players were listed with 400 or more HR’s.
I’ve switched over to MLS soccer. Actual scoring! San Jose 4, LA 3 with 15 minutes left.
Thank you Mr. Producer!
I think it made sense to include Ortiz in the list (but not in the count), given he’s only one away – which is exactly what was done.
Soccer?
Noooooooooooooo!
Come back Nickster! Come back!!!
All right Ichiro! Now come on, Casper!
Mr Producer: the list made sense. Thanks for clarifying, though. Sims stumbled a bit with it and it sounded like Blowers tried to assist while we were all counting names and lining it up with the stated answer.
On a side note – Ortiz sounds like a classy guy. Pre-game they were talking about how he had a chat with Noesi and Montero regarding their approach – how Noesi pitched him very well, but seemed to get lazy against the lesser hitters.
Baseball Gods owe us a double from Seager. Hopefully they are listening and in the mood.
YES!!! As Mike’s said previously – better to be lucky than good! hehehe
I said a “double” baseball Gods.
But thank you, anyway.
Great read by Ichiro.
DO IT JASO!
YES!! YESS!!
Jaso baby!!!
Who’s this Jaso guy and why hasn’t he been playing all year?
That’s better.
Baseball Gods hath speaketh.
M’s fans finally cheering louder than “the others” – a welcome sound!
Maybe they finally got a live chicken
Come on Smoaky! Please!
A sacrifice fly would be fine, here. Get something done, Smoak
Stay away Nickster! Soccer is awesome!!!
I think they started breathing through their eyelids.
What just happened?
Send Smoak down – he really needs to work on a few things.
Foul ball?
He can’t even fake an injury correctly.
Limp, dummy!
Sell it
Smoak is numb from the neck area downward, so if it did graze his shoe, he would not feel it.
Can’t pitch hit for Olivio with Jaso, darnit.
That’s it for Smoak as far as I’m concerned. He hasn’t got a clue. He should be in Tacoma by tomorrow.
The chance for two hits in a row for Miggy against a RHP are …
Yeah, Smoak is…not good. Really disappointing.
I think Smoak was so happy he didnt K – that he ran out of pure giddiness. I agree vetted – he should be gone to Tacoma, yesterday.
Ah, well – two runs anyway!
Freaking Jaso pasted that ball. Damn that was sweet.
We want more, please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m all in favor of moving Montero to the 1 bag and letting Jaso and Miggy take care of the catcher position…like Jaso 90% of the time. It shouldn’t be that hard to convert a catcher to first.
Jaso should be at first base and raking every day. No-brainer. If you can’t make that decision, I don’t know what they’re paying you for. That 1-out at bat by Smoak was criminal. Infield in, for crying out loud. Pure crap.
I was literally just typing the question here, because I didn’t see the play – why didn’t they tag Guti out? Now they show the replay and talk about it.
Frack, we needed that DP
Unless he lost his grip on the ball, there is no reason to not throw to 1B. Batter runner was not fast down the line. I think Ryan spins that play into two outs. I truly do.
Hate. Olivio. Hate.
Oh and League.
Change that suggested lineup. Mid80 – Jaso at catcher.
Ahhh, now I remember.
Mariners
O-li-vo! Whoa oh oh oh! O-li-vo! Whoa whoa whoa oh!
Olivo’s work is nowhere near done. Still plenty of game left to end up hating him even more
Can we just call Olivo “Olé!!” from now on?
I did say Jaso at catcher. They still need a backup and Miggy can fill that roll for the rest of the year.
F you, Olivo. F you to f ing Hell.
I agree about Kawasaki. You have to throw that ball. Pete Rose would have hit the guy between the eyes if he didn’t get down. Makes Oliva’s and Smoak’s at bats crucial. And the passed ball? What are we doing here? Get rid of both of those two wastes of time. Brutal.

That was to the tune of “Volare” by Domenico Modugno, for what it’s worth. And in Olivo’s case it’s worth approximately -6 TZ.
(Oops)
Crap, stepped away for a bit and the BoSox got two runs.
I picked a heck of a time to finish defrosting that freezer… (of course, I’ve been putting it off about six months now)
And if he did hit the runner between the eyes, it would have been interference and the batter runner called out. Our SS in high school turned a DP off an opponents helmet that way, once. Nice kid. Big heart. Coach told him after the game “nice play”. It’s the runners job to get down. He doesn’t get down, he eats it.
Come on, ump! Figgy’s got a tiny strike zone!
I don’t have a problem with that strike call… if ALL the umpires called it.
Mascot!
Westy, are you saying watching ice melt is more exciting than Mariners baseball?
Hit it out, Eech!
There isn’t anything Kawasaki doesn’t do that isn’t a little weird. Just diving back to first, he dives, crawls, and then swats at the bag.
Figgins – Kawasaki – Ichiro. Fear this!
Westy, are you saying watching ice melt is more exciting than Mariners baseball?
Hell, watching ice NOT melt is more interesting than this team’s offense most nights.
Yeah, that Ichiro! guy sucks. He’s the biggest problem on the team
Defrosting a freezer?!
Isn’t that what kids are for when they aren’t fetching the remote?
Well, G-Man…
Actually tonight’s game has been fun to watch. But I’ve found it’s a lot easier to defrost our big chest freezer if I get rid of most of the ice after the walls have warmed up, but the ice hasn’t yet melted much.
Hehe Mike.
Need one!
Frack
That was an interesting route. Marine layer must be working extra hard tonight in unison with the wind
Why do they keep having player nights on games where that player isn’t playing? This is apparently “Viva Las Vargas” night.
A-Gon is A-GONE!!
Nice job by Figgy!
I have always liked Gonzales. After seeing that extended replay from the other night, how can anybody not like him
And just tagged out! I am liking him even more!!
If A-Gon shaved his beard, he’d look a whole heck of a lot like Keith Hernandez.
Not a big Sims fan, but he just made the comment of the year (for him.). “You want a video game, buy one.”. In response to question about using technology to call balls and strikes.
And yes – Mike – you have to finish the play. Maybe he did lose the grip. Didn’t look like it though, did it?
Using replay to review home runs is using technology to affect the game, coach.
Ackley! Nice to see some hits falling for once!
With technology Mariano Rivera would have been a significantly worse closer, given that he received a huge strike zone from the umps.
And Felix’s Cy Young season would have been even better, as he got one of the smallest strike zones of any starter in MLB.
But, if we want to keep letting 60 year olds with diminished capabilities call games, we should continue to accept terrible and biased calls as part of the game.
Why does Olivio always seem to be up?
No, it did not look like Kawasaki lost his grip, but if he said he did, ii wouldnt argue against it. Its the only reason i could see for him to not make the throw, but i dont think that is what happened. It looked like he played it conservatively. Overly conservative.
Just liking the comment by Sims. The HR vs. balls and strikes thing is a whole other conversation. The HR call happens less frequently than a borderline strike, and you get an assist from the yellow stripe. I think the ball-strike thing opens a can of worms because you can’t get the paste back in the tube. Every hitter will be crying for a replay.
In truth I don’t have a strong opinion on that particular subject – it’s just that we’ve already got technology involved in the games, so it’s more a question of where we draw the line.
I recall when Sandy Alderson (IIRC) cracked down on individual umpire’s strike zones – for a year or two we got pretty good calls. But after that it seems MLB relaxed things, and umpires are back to their own personal strike zones. Really, I think we could do a lot to improve umpiring without even dealing with automation.
“Why does Olivio always seem to be up?”
Because he does shit like that.
Boy, there was almost no way to predict Olivo would strike out, there. Who would have ever thunk it?
Yes, thunk – you iPhone!
I have posted this before, but it may bare repeating. My dad umpires in the Florida state league in the early 60′s. They experimented with some sort of lazed technology during a spring training game. The “machine” called strike three
The batter subsequently beat the living fuck out of the machine with his bat.
Experiment concluded.
Umpire returned to his rightful position.
Ironically, using robots to call a strike zone would actually speed up the game, given that balls and strikes could be called faster and that there would be less ejections and arguing.
Tennis uses line cameras with great success and it takes about 10 seconds to check on a call.
The only plays that are hard to determine are where there is 2 or more variables, like a ball arrive and a runner touching the bag.
To be honest, these are the only plays that I don’t have a problem with the umpire calling because it would be too hard to measure with a computer.
“umpired” … And “laser”
I thought of tennis. How awful would that be? I like the human element behind the plate. There’s nothing like a wad of gum bouncing off of Valentine’s face.
Stop wearing horse heads to the ball game.
I was about to ask if your dad was a time traveler, Mike.
We have an imposing lineup coming up in the 9th.
Loved the old Kingdome footage there.
Maybe they should use Vargas as a pinch hitter.
I think he wishes he could be. He is 72, now … So going back to the early 60′s would be fine with him. He made it to AA and was expecting a promotion to AAA (only 16 big league teams then, too) but he hated the travel and he hated being away from his newborn son. I am glad he made the choice he did. He missed nothing.
I like the players to determine the game. Not old moronic jackasses like Joe West.
Felix should PH.
Kawasaki just threw a strike to Alvin Davis. (If he hits a dinger this inning, I’ll purchase his jersey.)
What was THAT?
Kawasaki with a winning home run here.
Hey Muni’s trying to grow a mustache! Isn’t that cute…
Put a machine behind the catcher and see how long lasts, Henry.
Is Joe West here today?
The computers are actually around the stadium, and no where near the field. Yet another good reason. Nothing to get in the way.
God willing, Joe West is being mauled by boars somewhere.
Come on Ichiro!
Sorry, that was mean. Boars have better sense than to get near Joe West.
Bye the way, I don’t like joe west, either. There needs to be a stricter criteria for longevity, but there needs to be a “gevity”
IMO
Replay of Olivo’s latest miscue – what’s the timetable for Zunino’s arrival again?
Replay of Olivo’s latest miscue – what’s the timetable for Zunino’s arrival again?
2014, I would guess.
“Ball not hit hard enough for a double play,” Blowers BS.
*sigh*
Ichi-D’oh!
There’s something wrong with a Randy Johnson bobblehead where he’s smiling.
This is boring. Just hurry up and drop a 3rd strike, and then let 3 passed balls go by, Olivo.
Adam Moore makes more sense than Olivo until then. Anybody does.
Are we playing the Dodgers soon? They’ve been scoring even less than the M’s.
Are we playing the Dodgers soon? They’ve been scoring even less than the M’s.
I seem to remember them taking 2 of 3 from us after we no hit them.
I do hope Adam Moore gets another shot. I suspect it won’t be here though.
I’d bet half of this season’s attendance will be fans from other teams.
Yes, we know the cameras are around the stadium and would not be behind the catcher, literally. To me, it means it would simply take longer for the players to walk into the stands before beating the holy fuck out of it/them
Expanded replay is coming for sure and for certain, but it will NEVER be used to call balls and strikes.
Come on Wilhelmsen.
Why were they not shifted for Ortiz?
Painful. Very painful to watch.
Wedge doesn’t believe in that new-fangled stuff like shifting, Henry. That’s for those young pups like Joe Maddon to try.
Rick has just come up with the M’s 2013 slogan.
“Painful. Very painful to watch.”
Actually I think Wedge has shifted the defense on rare occasions.
Wilhelmensnesoensonemensen!!
I do love that curve!
What’s wrong with a green/red light in the ump’s mask and if he wants too go against the computer he still can? Kind of like an assist, rather than full on computers.
You know Westy, Wesge is younger than us. He might not look it, but he is.
That play has to be made by Ackley. They got a break, there – but he has to make that play in a pressure situation (high leverage I should say)
I think I am too old to agree with the red light green light kids game thingy, but I respect your opinion regardless of how wrong I believe it to be.
Mid80s
Cool idea, especially if the computer was configured to each upm’s tendencies rather than a cookie cutter zone.
Holy crap, Mike. He’s eight years younger than me!
Can we get to closing time and get the bartender a win, please?
Wedge is not 63!
????
Oooh, that was low.
Hendu is awful, simply awful. He’s telling me how Jaso has some tantric hitting technique and frankly, he’s skeeving me when I’m trying to just listen to the game.
Where’s the thesaurus?
Tantric?
Please dumb it down for game threads.
Haha Juneau, I was thinking the same thing! He’s got “mystical” powers!
Better than the vultures circling, Sims
Seagulls getting impatient and circling … Maybe they think the mariner offense is dead already.
Jaso has had two very borderline/out side the strike zone pitches called as strike three.
And Olivo has called time at least once, if not twice, and not gotten it.
Apparently the ump doesn’t like catchers.
Wow, actually a good crowd for once!
Wow, actually a good crowd for once!
35,000 Boston fans.
Probably too drunk to know where they are.
Nice!
Now:
Runs runs runs runs runs!
Or:
Run run run run run!
Jaso was a nice pickup by Z, methinks. Even if he doesn’t manage a 1.000 BABIP, despite Hendu’s expectations.
PROVE ME WRONG, SMOAK!
Smoak is starting to look like Sexson.
Who would Jaso argue with when K zone showed that high strike as a strike last inning?
Which “light” goes off (red or green or fuscia) to let everyone know that Miggy wants time?
D*mn you A-Gon!
That was a nice play, unfortunately.
Nice play by A-Gon.
msfanmike, that was a sex reference. We need something to perk this game up.
I’m starting to hate Smoak, that’s sad.
A little more wind and Smoak hits that one out of the park.
Is he down to .200 yet?
Henry, I *wish* Smoak was as good at 25 as Sexson was.
We could be here all night.
Seems like the “dumb-guy-that’s-supposed-to-stop-balls-from-hitting-you puts his hand up right in front of you” light would be good.
Jeez, maybe Hendu’s been in that booth too long. Now he’s saying that ball found some love to get through.
And Olivio’s up again. Gack!
“Up in the zone”, my *ss.
That was at eye level, and Miggy swung at it.
If it’s a strike, Mike, it’s a strike. The rule book is quite clear..
We need a money bag, Ackley
And I need a thesaurus!
Pull Olivo now. Put a good runner in to prevent a double play.
Crap, Olivo will be in the line-up until the ASB.
BUNT. I’M CALLING FOR A BUNT HERE.
(seriously)
Lucky vs good, Westy!
In living color.
I think it was actually a Wee Willie Keeler quote.
Don’t suck figgins….
Montero should be pinch hitting!
Whoa, both Figgins and Olivo did something useful in this game…
Chone Figgins for a deep fly ball? Really?!?
Might as well put Noesi in to prevent home runs.
LUCKY AGAIN!!!!!!
I love you Figgy!
Thank the gods. Wait, they will 2 games because Salty drops the ball twice?
I’ll take it. I’m missing my Saturday night Lockup:Raw after all.
The good news is that Figgy’s trade value has gone way up tonight!
Please tell me someone saw Kawasaki being creepy there!
Figgy!
It was not more strength Ross needed, it was more accuracy.
Trade Figgy now!
I want to see Wedge call for a suicide squeeze, one of these days…
Mid 80′s: in no way are we disagreeing. We only disagree on who should be calling the rule book. Human error is part of the deal.
I can certainly live with it, anyway. I might not always like it, but I can live with it.
I saw Kawasaki getting a little extra wrestle time with someone who was not Figgins … If that is what you mean.
I did see it and my wife noticed it too.
Muni definitely is a strange dude. I watched his entire routine when Ackley scored. Impossible to describe.
“a littleo extra wrestle time.”. I am doubled over laughing. What was that?!
A love that dare not speak its name?
I think Muni is just in heaven right now, being in Major League Baseball and on the same roster as his idol, Ichiro.
He’s just living in the moment. I think it’s great, even if it’s a bit odd at times.
I love the jazz hands. I love the pushups at first base.
It looked like he dove on your boy Wells for a few extra seconds of manly celebration. And with a weird grin to boot.
Maybe Muni has the Griffey tickle lead, now with his own interpretation thereof
Right elbow, arm numbness/twinge For Erasmo.
Yeah, wait for the MRI – but this sounds just like it looked.
I’m with you, Westy – all numbers aside, in an otherwise pretty bleak season, Muni’s quirky but genuinely heartfelt enthusiasm is a joy to watch… Often odd to be sure, but a joy nonetheless…
@ Juneau: bring more scrabble words tomorrow
Don’t mess with the streak …………. Of one, that is
Whatever it takes…
*sitting here with one sock on*
I somewhat agree Mike, I enjoy the human aspect. But, in my example it would give the umps the option of disagreeing with the computer, maintaining the human element.
Too many beers in an extra inning game..
I’m late, but I wanted to point out, that I understood there were 7 active players on that list. The confusing part, was that they mentioned Ortiz. Maybe I heard wrong? Regardless of what Sims said, 7 is the correct number of active players. That number will change very soon, though!
The greatest GIF ever
Mike, I’m with you on Ramirez. Crap on a cracker, it’ll suck if another player goes down.
O-key, Henry, I gotta admit that was weird.
Who would have thought, that Kawasaki was the alpha-male on the club?!
I’m a tiny bit concerned about Henry…
