Game 69, Mariners at Athletics

King Felix vs. AJ Griffin, 4:10pm *NOTE THE WEIRD START TIME*

Happy Felix day! The M’s are celebrating by having Henry Blanco make his M’s debut. Kendrys Morales turns 30 in a few days, but he’s still barely in his 20s today. That gives the M’s four players in their 20s compared to just three over 35-year olds. This line-up is…something.

1: Chavez, RF
2: Franklin, 2B
3: Seager, 3B
4: Morales, DH
5: Ibanez, LF
6: Morse, 1B
7: Saunders, CF
8: Blanco, C
9: Ryan, SS
SP: King Felix

With Hector Noesi starting for Tacoma, maybe the most interesting SP in the M’s minors is Lars Huijer, the Dutchman who’ll start game 2 of the AquaSox season in Spokane.

Given the roster we have, I can’t complain too much about this line-up. I’d rather see Zunino than Blanco; but Morse and Morales at 1B/DH in some combination actually is the best use for the two players.

I realize Wedge will, unfortunately, inflict Morse on the outfield as soon as he can, though.

Funny that Blanco is hitting ahead of Ryan…

  2. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 4:08 pm

    Oh, boy, game’s on Fox.

  3. Kazinski on June 15th, 2013 4:27 pm

According to the Fox announcers Ackley will probably be back up soon. I guess that means Triunfel gets sent down, Ackley is the back up at 2nd, 1st and gets some outfield starts. Franklin will be the back up at short. Who backs up 3rd? I guess it would be Franklin.

Unless they are planning to send Saunders down to get him straightened out.

  4. henryv on June 15th, 2013 4:32 pm

Holy fuck Felix is looking sexy today.

Also, I’ve been out of the loop. Has there been any explanation as to “Shoppach, WTF happened?”

  5. henryv on June 15th, 2013 4:34 pm

Funny that Blanco is hitting ahead of Ryan…

I’m wondering if AL managers think that the #8 spot is actually less important than the #9, since you might be able to argue that you want your #1 guy to also have guys on base.

  6. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 4:47 pm

The narrative has all been about Blanco , Henry. They’re basically saying nothing about Shoppach.

  7. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 5:03 pm

    Typical Felix outing so far.

  8. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 5:04 pm

Man, these announcers are unbelievably boring.

  9. nvn8vbryce on June 15th, 2013 5:17 pm

Westy, I’m stuck watching a Bonderman interview right now…

C’mon, Fox, that double would have been nice to see!

  10. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 5:21 pm

Oh, is there a ball game going on? I thought I was watching an interview show! ;-)

  11. Woodcutta on June 15th, 2013 5:35 pm

Thank you Rich Waltz, now I know the Astros offense isn’t bad despite them leading the league in strikeouts and 10+ strikeout games.

  12. djw on June 15th, 2013 5:39 pm

Gah. In 29 major league ballparks, Seager gets a crack at 3-2.

  13. djw on June 15th, 2013 5:44 pm

Not sure if a good 1B would have had it, but Morse looked pretty immobile on that double.

  14. HighlightsAt11 on June 15th, 2013 5:45 pm

Thought it was a night game. But it’s on Fox. Arriving late just to see Chavez hit a single and Franklin double. Too bad Kyle couldn’t convert.

Was Morse playing too far off the bag with a switch hitter at bat?

Now the A’s are threatening with no outs. Felix time to tighten the reins.

  15. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 5:45 pm

    Nice play!

  16. djw on June 15th, 2013 5:46 pm

That….was a better throw than I was expecting from Chavez.

  17. KiWiNiNjA on June 15th, 2013 5:46 pm

    **** yes!

And Felix calls him out at the plate. :)

  18. HighlightsAt11 on June 15th, 2013 5:46 pm

Nice throw Chavez and good tag Blanco!

  19. Seattleken on June 15th, 2013 5:46 pm

Sweet play and Blanco held on….

  20. HighlightsAt11 on June 15th, 2013 5:50 pm

Kazinski…yes time for Saunders to get his game together in Tacoma.

Now that I’ve posted that, Condor hits it over the fence his next at bat…

  21. nvn8vbryce on June 15th, 2013 5:51 pm

Now we need to get Felix some run support…

  22. HighlightsAt11 on June 15th, 2013 5:55 pm

I happy the drumming in Oakland is not over taking the Fox broadcast audio as it does on the Root Sports broadcasts.

The Mariners have some slow base runners for sure.

  23. nvn8vbryce on June 15th, 2013 5:55 pm

Had anyone else but Morales been on, we would be up 1-0

  24. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 5:55 pm

    Man, Condor, come ON.

  25. HighlightsAt11 on June 15th, 2013 5:58 pm

    Blanco!!!!!! Welcome to the M’s!!!!

  26. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 5:58 pm

    WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!!

  27. Slats on June 15th, 2013 5:58 pm

  29. KiWiNiNjA on June 15th, 2013 5:58 pm

    Blanco salamiiiiiiiii!

    Felix says “Not bad!”

  30. Section329 on June 15th, 2013 5:58 pm

    Blanko!!!

  31. nvn8vbryce on June 15th, 2013 5:58 pm

    Blanco!!!

  32. terryoftacoma on June 15th, 2013 6:00 pm

    kelly who? haha

  33. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 6:01 pm

Blanco sez “you did NOT just walk Saunders to get to me. Oh no you DIDN’T!”

  34. djw on June 15th, 2013 6:05 pm

Great play by Franklin. Would have had most runners.

  35. KiWiNiNjA on June 15th, 2013 6:06 pm

And Felix keeps his pitch count down again.

    Bloody brilliant.

  36. darndy on June 15th, 2013 6:07 pm

Damn shame what they did to that dog..

  37. G-Man on June 15th, 2013 6:18 pm

Hey, It’s a good thing for Blanco that he hit that salami, because his job would be in jeopardy, as the Marlins just put Olivo on their restricted list and want to trade him.

  38. Paul B on June 15th, 2013 6:23 pm

    Dear god,

    Don’t even joke about that.

  39. Seattleken on June 15th, 2013 6:24 pm

    come on change speeds

  40. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 6:26 pm

Did you hear what Olivo did, though?

He left the team, unannounced, just before the game. He looked at the lineup card and saw he wasnt on it, then came out for BP. but then one of his teammates was heading into the clubhouse before the game and found him putting on street clothes.

No way Wedge would want him after that – it’s a cardinal sin.

  41. Seattleken on June 15th, 2013 6:26 pm

yes change up – good call Felix

  42. msfanmike on June 15th, 2013 6:44 pm

Nice clean inning by Furbush. That was good to see.

  43. terryoftacoma on June 15th, 2013 6:46 pm

Olivo screwed himself on that one. Instead, of DFA ing him. They put him on the restricted list. Can’t play and can’t get traded either.

  44. G-Man on June 15th, 2013 6:47 pm

So do you guys think the story is true, that Blanco is really a much better mentor than Shoppach? Even if he is, I think Kelly must have rubbed Wedge the wrong way. But heck, they were together in Cleveland.

  45. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 6:50 pm

    Nice catch by Moss there.

  46. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 6:53 pm

I have no idea, G-Man. It’s hard to believe they’d just flat out dump Shoppach for a worse player… But on the other hand, they seem to believe in the power of old guy mentors, despite the fact that the team is doing worse in 2013 than it did in 2012.

It just reinforces in me the desire to see the org clean house soon.

  47. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 6:58 pm

Medina has a “live arm” = no idea where the ball is going

  48. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 7:00 pm

I feel like I should wear a rally cap even though my team has a 4 run lead…

  49. G-Man on June 15th, 2013 7:02 pm

I think they’re looking for the fast ball.

  50. G-Man on June 15th, 2013 7:02 pm

    Ha, right, Westy.

  51. msfanmike on June 15th, 2013 7:03 pm

That was a big K! More work left to do.

  52. G-Man on June 15th, 2013 7:04 pm

    No problemo.

  53. Westside guy on June 15th, 2013 7:04 pm

    Woooo!!!!

  54. raul_podzednick on June 15th, 2013 7:40 pm

I have to admit I was calling for Zunino to PH with the bases juiced.

  55. MrZDevotee on June 15th, 2013 11:00 pm

    Raul-
Confession: me too. My wife mocked me afterwards… “Still want Zunino to bat instead?!”

Westy- funniest post of all-time only because it TOTALLY struck a “yep” chord with me… Your “My team is up by 4 and I feel like I need a rally cap!”

Cracked me up. But nailed the feeling I had when the 9th inning was playing out… Up by 4 and thinking “we have no chance to win this” when Furbush and Medina were getting the matchups.

Maybe the team is FINALLY learning to fool itself, with reverse psychology, meaning– to screw up screwing up. Maybe we’ve come full circle finally and we’re so bad now, we can’t even lose when we should!? *laugh*

  56. HighlightsAt11 on June 16th, 2013 2:22 am

    “to screw up screwing up”

    A good line.

I assumed Saunders was going to strike out. Instead he receives an intentional walk. Give Saunders credit, if he had not been patient enough to get to the advantageous count, he wouldn’t have been given the free base and likely could have hit into a double play which would have killed the inning.

  57. HighlightsAt11 on June 16th, 2013 2:23 am

From ESPN game notes: Wedge said 1B Justin Smoak (strained right oblique), CF Franklin Gutierrez (strained right hamstring) and demoted 2B Dustin Ackley would likely be re-evaluated after Sunday’s game to determine their next steps

  58. Woodcutta on June 16th, 2013 3:10 am

    MrZ-

So does that mean George Costanza was hired as a team mentor?

  59. qwerty on June 16th, 2013 9:27 am

    “old guy mentors”….
I heard Carlton Fisk is being considered.
