What a disaster of a series performance! And versus the Angels no less, a team I think I despise over all else in baseball, though that’s a variable and subjective assessment.

Unadjusted, the Mariners batting line for the previous fortnight is a whopping .221/.277/.329. I wonder how much longer Dustin Ackley stays down in Tacoma.

I found it humorous that a game or two ago, Eric Wedge sat Justin Smoak on the basis that he was crunched trying to get Morales and Morse in the lineup as well. Not that slumps are predictable, but injuries are and Morales and Morse were/are both battling nagging injuries and currently sucking. I know Justin Smoak doesn’t inspire much, but he’s also still under team control and maybe worth prioritizing over those two in the short run. Let them rest and heal so they can hopefully mash and maybe incite some trade interest.

I mean, how else are the Mariners going to go get Andre Ethier? It’s not like Zduriencik would be dumb enough to trade away promising young prospects for a hideously over-priced and aging outfielder, right? Ha, ha. Of course not.

Well, Wedge was right that Jaso sure doesn’t hit many dingers. This is just depressing.

OVERALL -21.7 (26th) -11.5 19.4 (4th) ATHLETICS

Just awful. UZR pegs the Mariners as dead last in the Majors at defense, and my metric is close to agreement. Sure glad the defensive sacrifices have paid off in all those extra runs scored. It was a bad plan, badly executed, and now yielding predictably bad results.

Meanwhile, the Athletics have an interestingly schizophrenic talent pool between the infield and outfield, but overall it’s led them to decent success.

21 JUN 19:10 – HISASHI IWAKUMA vs BARTOLO COLON

The Mariners managed to get to Bartolo Colon last time out. Well, for a couple innings. And then they packed it in and just made outs the rest of the way. Maybe the Mariners are confused about how long baseball games are? Maybe they operate under the assumption that games are five innings long and that everything afterward is like that cool down stretching period you’re supposed to do after workouts, but never actually do because you treat your body like it’s no big deal? Stop doing that.

22 JUN 19:10 – AARON HARANG vs DAN STRAILY

23 JUN 13:10 – JEREMY BONDERMAN vs JARROD PARKER

Six innings with six hits allowed, a home run, three walks issued, a hit batter, and nobody stuck out in his last outing garnered Jeremy Bonderman with praise. I understand wanting to be positive and I understand that runs rules all, but those goals are not incompatible with praising the defense or expressing concern over the lack of strikeouts. You could do nuance, Mariners, though I’m not sure why you’d care to.

The bullpen has lost control. Over the past 14 days, they’re last in FIP by almost a full run, they’re last in ERA by almost two full runs. Unsurprisingly given those, they’re last in home run rate and nearly last in walk rate as well.

Even the fluke stuff is against them, with the second lowest strand rate and an insane .419 BABIP. It’s not just a last two weeks problem either, as they’ve been sliding backward for the last month. This is why I don’t put stock in bullpens being strengths or weaknesses before the season begins, they’re far too variable to rely upon.

The Athletics pen has not been disintegrating of late, but they do exhibit a lack of strikeouts.

What’s the timetable for Pryor’s return?

Lack of strikeouts? The Mariners can fix that.

I noticed Seattle is third worst in RS/RA, with a run difference of -59. Only the Astros and the Marlins are worse, and they knew what they were from the start. The Mariners thought they were good; of course we knew better, but really, I didn’t know we were essentially facing relegation.

    After 74 games…

2013 Mariners, chock full o’ veteranny goodness:
    RS 261, RA 320 (diff -59)

2012 Mariners, AKA “We don’t have any veterans to provide leadership in the clutch”:
    RS 307, RA 332 (diff -25)

I had no idea we’d be on a 68-win pace at this point in the season,

    Perfect Title for the post!

Even though we not only get kicked, but kicked repeatedly when we are down, a post with numbers assessing the “state of” with a tenuous hope for the future needs to be read. Not only getting abused but also self abused.

I have long since transitioned from Mariners fan to Mariners blog fan.

Mathew (or posters)-does anyone have a link to the introduction that Mathew made on this pre-games series when he first started writing for USSM?

I know the M’s are bad-but I am still learning the terminology to describe how bad they are.

I think Pryor is not coming back before ASB
