2013 Rawlings Gold Shoe Award Finalists

Jeff Sullivan · October 25, 2013 at 6:49 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Finalists for the 2013 Gold Glove Awards were announced Friday, and the Mariners didn’t have anybody included, because they weren’t good. They did, however, have a pair of finalists for the 2013 Gold Shoe Awards.

Raul Ibanez, outfield

  • -20.5 UZR/1000 innings, t-2nd-worst in baseball
  • -22.8 DRS/1000 innings, 2nd-worst in baseball

Michael Morse, outfield

  • -20.5 UZR/1000 innings, t-2nd-worst in baseball
  • -27.6 DRS/1000 innings, worst in baseball

Congratulations, Raul Ibanez and Michael Morse. Even if you don’t end up golden, your cleats were certainly made of some kind of metal.

I went to the last game Aaron Harang started, and Ibanez started in LF and Morse in RF. I believe Harang went 3 nearly perfect innings, and then the opponents started hitting fly balls to the outfield, mostly RF. I swear, if competent outfielders had been playing, he might have pitched a shutout. As it was, I think he left in the 5th after giving up 7 runs and was released before he could make another start.

I watched Joe Saunders get beat up all year with many starts from the Bondermans and Harangs of the world. After my experience at the game I just described, I spent the rest of the year wondering just how good or bad the Mariners pitchers were with that kind of defense behind them, and ranted and raved every time I came to Safeco and watched Raul in LF and Michael Saunders on the bench. For that reason alone, I am glad Wedge is gone.

No Gold Shoe for Kendrys Morales?? I’m outraged!

Pity dingers and veteran presence were also accompanied by soul distressingly bad defence. Great club you put together Jack Z; what wondrous surprises do you have in store for us in 2014 ?

Sadly, I think Kendrys didn’t get enough time in the field to be considered.

Personally, I would loved to have see the M’s go from broke, and field an outfield of Morales, Ibanez, and Morse.

Oh, I didn’t know they’d hadn’t a category for DHs. (After all, gold shoes matter for DHs.)

That was good! I wonder if the M’s could turn a profit with the sales from a blooper reel?

    D is for DHfence.
This topic ties in well to DMZ’s post.

    Cleats of clay.

Saw it with my own amazed eyes. By pure accident, last summer, I happened to trip across a Bellingham Bells game… and saw more ability to run, jump and throw.

Please explain: Are we still rebuilding the rebuild, or are we going to now rebuild the rebuild of the rebuild?

I, for one, am on pins and needles…

But, hey, that Family Fun Environment at Safeco sure makes up for the thing the Mariners call baseball.
