Cactus League Game 17, Cubs at Mariners

A mid-March battle between two underwhelming pitchers coming off serious injuries and trying to make their respective clubs on minor league/non-roster invites. Yeah. Certain games, even the occasional spring training game, just sell themselves. Selling this one’s going to take a lot more marketing savvy than I’ve got.
It IS on tv, and that’s cool. We could check in on Wolf’s progress in picking up a split-fingered fastball. Or, we could bask in the most gorgeous evening of the young year here in the Pacific Northwest.

3: Cano, 2B
4: Smoak, 1B
5: Morrison, DH
6: Ackley, LF
7: Saunders, RF
8: Zunino, C
9: Miller, SS
SP: Wolf
That line-up looks pretty close to what I figure we’ll see on opening day, with Corey Hart subbing in for Saunders or Morrison against lefties.

Brad is the starting shortstop, Blo. There is no competition with Franklin.
Agree that Miller is the SS, but I’m going to get real tired of Hart and Morrison if they don’t rake and Franklin is hitting .340 in T-town. I like Franklin and he needs a position (hint: he has enough arm for RF)
I certainly hope Miller bats at the top of the lineup and not the bottom. Almonte isn’t ready to be leading off.
Well, I’m already sick of Monterrible for 2014. Hilarious call though, asking if he’s coming out to get the pitcher or the first baseman!

Sorry folks. I was just reading today that McClendon considers Smoak to be his starting first baseman the same way he considers Seager to be his starting third baseman.
It’s quite possible Mac doesn’t have a lot of say regarding who his starting first baseman is.
I know Spring Training numbers don’t mean anything, but are we really going into 2014 with Abe Almonte as our leadoff hitter? This is still just an “experiment” phase right?
I don’t mind playing him, because defensively he’ll earn his keep (fingers crossed) but Miller or Seager makes more sense as the leadoff guy with the other batting 2nd… Almonte would seem to be a natural fit at 9th in the order.
Agreed. A lot of lefties at the top but I would think most days it should look something like this:
