Game 59, Mariners at Braves

Hisashi Iwakuma vs. Mike Minor, 9:10am (??)

Eaarrrrrly game here. Mike Minor’s a lefty with a FB that scrapes 90 mph, but who posts an above average K rate thanks to a good curve and change, along with what looks like some deception in his delivery. The change is good enough that he has extremely small platoon splits, and he’s able to pound the zone reliably and limit walks. He’s down to essentially two weaknesses. First, home runs. Pitching half his games in Turner Field, Minor shouldn’t have a 1.11 career HR/9. Second, the poor fellow underwent urinary tract surgery this offseason, which is why he’s only making his seventh start of the season. Baseball is unpredictable, and I like to think that each of these game previews can be different or unique in some way, but if I never have to read the phrase “scarring around his urethra” again, I’ll be a happy blogger.

1: Bloomquist 1bwhaaa?
2: Chavez, CF
3: Cano, 2B
4: Romero, RF
5: Seager, 3B
6: Zunino, C
7: Gillespie, LF
8: Miller, SS
9/SP: Iwakuma

Trevor Miller, Scott DeCecco start in the minors today. Tacoma’s got a rare day off.

Seems odd that Dave Valle is still doing his TV gigs on Root and MLB, while he supposedly is manager at Everett. This begs the question whether the Mariners are hiring serious baseball people to instruct their kids. I realize the Everett season doesn’t start until next week, but is he planning on showing up a minute before game time? In or out? Does Valle want to manage or not?

Gotta love 2 career replacement level players batting first and second.

    Lloyd is definitely trolling us.

  3. kfrei2 on June 4th, 2014 9:31 am

This lineup makes me want to puke.

Poor Iwakuma, he deserves so much better than this.

  4. JasonJ on June 4th, 2014 9:43 am

Forget the top two guys. Romero batting clean-up? What the hell is that?

  5. Dennisss on June 4th, 2014 9:59 am

That has to be one of the very few intentional walks in Willie’s career. If you’re Endy Chavez, you have to feel insulted.

Lloyd says “someone has to bat there.”

I had to look. Before today, Willie had 6 career IBB. Two came in his first stint with Seattle!

The last was in 2011, when he was with Arizona. He had 3 that year, half his career total. I assume he was hitting 8th and they walked him to face the pitcher.

  8. taylor.mariner on June 4th, 2014 10:43 am

Which must have lead to a lot of insulted pitchers.

  9. Westside guy on June 4th, 2014 10:45 am

    Oh snap.

  10. Adlerhorst on June 4th, 2014 11:01 am

Cannot begin to describe how hot it is here.

Was right behind home plate for a bit but have run for the safety of the aircon.

  11. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:05 am

I presume the regular rotation (Young/Elias/King/Kuma) will be pitching against the Rays, each starter with at least the normal number of days off in between starts.

But who will be pitching against the Yankees the first game? Erasmo?

  12. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:10 am

Pitchers duel. Kuma nice sac! Ugh the top of the order is back up.

  13. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:13 am

    That’s veteran grit for you.

  14. BoomBoom on June 4th, 2014 11:14 am

I see no reason to start Erasmo when Willie Bloomquist is on the roster.

  15. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:16 am

    Adler…NWS says its 85F 59% humidity. That’s not HOT.

  16. murphy_dog on June 4th, 2014 11:16 am

Dear God, thank you for not enabling me to watch or listen to this game today.

  17. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:17 am

I thought Willie is a backup catcher. Does he pitch too?

  18. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:19 am

Both teams are swinging at early pitches.

  19. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:25 am

Good job Kuma. Good job D.

    Stefen looking good today.

Zunino and/or Seager MUST get Romero home.

  20. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:25 am

Ahh…that would be sub Jones, and Seager gets it done.

  21. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:27 am

Kuma with 96 pitches. Will he get a complete game.

  22. Dennisss on June 4th, 2014 11:33 am

I doubt a complete game, but it would be nice to see him pitch the eighth.

  23. kfrei2 on June 4th, 2014 11:39 am

Nothing against Medina, but I really would have liked to see Iwakuma go back out for one more inning.

  24. Westside guy on June 4th, 2014 11:39 am

Kuma keeps getting Felix-level run support, yet somehow manages to keep winning because he is Awesome Incarnate.

But I suspect Lloyd doesn’t think “Kuma won with only two runs scored by our guys” – he thinks “Kuma won thanks to my amazing lineup pencil skills, man I am such an awesome manager!”

  25. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:40 am

Oh Medina. Since his stumble at Houston Yoervis has improved. Hope he continues that in June.

  26. Dennisss on June 4th, 2014 11:44 am

Westside, he is on the verge of beating Atlanta 2 straight because he got production out of Romero, Buck, and Gillespie. The man is an outright genius.

  27. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:44 am

Right-on Yoervis. So it will be Rollercoaster Rodney for the ninth.

  28. Adlerhorst on June 4th, 2014 11:45 am

85 degrees is hot if you are from England. ;)

If it goes above 80 I melt.

  29. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:49 am

Smoak batting for Medina. Why? Smoak don’t hit.

    See.

  30. Adlerhorst on June 4th, 2014 11:49 am

One thing, the organist here is awesome. Just had smoke on the water for Justin Smoak’s walk up music. Had Bloom for WFB.

  31. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:53 am

    Wish Safeco had an organist.

  32. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 11:55 am

Top of the lineup playing small ball, but Robinson unable to cash in the insurance.

  33. Dennisss on June 4th, 2014 11:56 am

Even making an out, Cano is so good.

  34. AssumedName on June 4th, 2014 11:57 am

I feel really good about Rodney facing Freeman, Upton, and Gattis.

    No. No, I don’t.

  35. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 12:03 pm

Besides the meltdown at home against Tampa Bay Rodney has had an excellent month. No jinx here.

  36. Paul B on June 4th, 2014 12:04 pm

A replacement level team definitely wins some games.

    3 games over .500.

With Endy Chavez as your starting centerfielder.

    Huh.

  37. naviomelo on June 4th, 2014 12:07 pm

    Sweet win!!!

  38. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 12:09 pm

I’ve quit trying to make sense of this team. That April 8-game losing streak continues to lurk in the shadows. Just need to enjoy the current ride for however long it lasts.

  39. Westside guy on June 4th, 2014 12:09 pm

The score was 2-0. Given that teams average around 4-5 runs a game, this would be a loss if it weren’t for Kuma being amazing – as was the case in several other Kuma wins this year.

The Mariners won in spite of McLendon’s lineup, not because of it.

  40. californiamariner on June 4th, 2014 12:09 pm

This 5 game winning streak is so unexpected. But that makes it fun. Off day tomorrow, just skip Erasmo in the rotation!

  41. Dennisss on June 4th, 2014 12:10 pm

A replacement-level lineup with Iwakuma pitching will definitely win some games. I almost want to have some hope for this team again…

  42. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 12:10 pm

But who pitches first game against the Yanks?

  43. Dennisss on June 4th, 2014 12:11 pm

Well Westside, if I had seen your comment first, I wouldn’t have bothered.

  44. LongDistance on June 4th, 2014 12:14 pm

If we’re going to be all whatever and still win, let’s see what Willie can do as a closer.

  45. HighlightsAt11 on June 4th, 2014 12:20 pm

Of AL teams, Toronto and Houston have went 8-2, and Seattle 7-3, in the last ten games. I have no idea what this means.

But then I don’t understand Toronto playing in the “American” League.

  46. naviomelo on June 4th, 2014 12:26 pm

Let Erasmo pitch that New York game and hopefully by the next time his turn rolls around, Walker will be ready.

  47. Westside guy on June 4th, 2014 12:28 pm

Dennisss, your comment was from a more positive place than mine was, so I’m glad you said it!

  48. groundzero55 on June 4th, 2014 12:32 pm

Highlights, Canada is part of America. As is Mexico, and for that matter, Brazil.

  49. naviomelo on June 4th, 2014 1:27 pm

Just saying: this team is 4-11 when Erasmo, Maurer, or Beavan starts, and 27-17 when someone else does.

  50. bookbook on June 4th, 2014 4:40 pm

Mardervhas a .948 OPS over the past 30 days.
Next Mariners AAAA second baseman ™, coming right up…

  51. MrZDevotee on June 4th, 2014 4:44 pm

Do my eyes deceive me, or are we tied for 5th most wins in ALL OF MLB at the moment?

    WTF? (oops… excuse my initialling…)

  52. MrZDevotee on June 4th, 2014 4:49 pm

    bookbook-
Just saw on CBSSports the stat that Iwakuma and King are 38-19 the past two seasons, while everyone else who’s started for the M’s are a combined 60-101.

Wow. McClendon was also quoted, about our offense, as saying “We have our bb’s… We dodge the bullets and then try to hit ‘em between the eyes.”

Best description of the M’s offense ever…?

  53. MrZDevotee on June 4th, 2014 4:55 pm

whoops, above comment was response to naviomelo… Not bookbook… (Hope you enjoyed it too? *laugh*)

  54. Sowulo on June 4th, 2014 8:00 pm

    “Adler…NWS says its 85F 59% humidity. That’s not HOT.”

It was 95°F with 96% humidity at 8am here today. Had to take the dog out for a walk and she stayed locked in my shadow the whole way.

  55. naviomelo on June 5th, 2014 7:32 am

    MrZ – Loved that quote!
