Game 82, Indians at Mariners

Felix Hernandez vs. T.J. House, 1:10 PM

Raise your hand if you had heard of T.J. House before this series. Okay, I can’t see that from here but I’m going to assume that nothing is happening. T.J. House, real name: Glenn Anthony House, has never been a top prospect and is the latest in a storied line of some guys who end up making major league starts for baseball teams. His pitch selection has been roughly 60% FB, 20% slider, 20% change, with the fastball clocking in around 91 mph. The slider appears to be his best pitch. He hasn’t been good overall and is significantly worse against right-handers, giving up more walks and extra-base hits. Seriously, his RH numbers are .314/.392/.529. This means we get a different looking lineup.

SS Willie Bloomquist
CF Michael Saunders
2B Robinson Cano
3B Kyle Seager
C Mike Zunino
1B Logan Morrison
RF Stefen Romero
DH John Buck
LF Cole Gillespie

To touch on the only real positive of last night’s game: Maurer in relief looks good. We’ve all been burned by the erratic nature of pitching and bullpen arms before, so I’m not making any long-term declarations as to what might happen, but he looks like what we thought we were getting with the first year of Carter Capps.

After the game, we also got confirmation that Taijuan Walker will be starting tomorrow. Hooray.

Happy Felix Day.

This looks like the kind of lineup that will give Felix the run support he deserves.

This takes us past the halfway point of the season and Felix is worth more WAR than 4 team pitching staffs.

I think we would all settle for a first half repeat with 88 wins. Dang!!!

I’ve wondered if Romero will be the next one down when Hart returns. Call me stu…..bborn, but I think Smoak’s more likely to stay in Tacoma following his rehab tour. Morrison’s sportin’ a .800+ OPS in June. Unless he goes hitless for two consecutive games, how does Llyod even consider replacing him?

  5. Eastside Suds on June 29th, 2014 1:39 pm

Morrison isn’t going anywhere No way he is sent down with the solid hitting as of late. Who else would watch the flight of Rodney’s arrows??

  6. Jay Yencich on June 29th, 2014 1:43 pm

I heard someone suggest that perhaps Romero would go down instead of Maurer in preparation for Walker arriving tomorrow. That surely would be interesting.

I mentioned that 3 days ago that the M’s may consider keeping 13 pitchers for awhile. It isn’t like they have a big bopper waiting to get in the lineup. WFB/Gillespie/Buck are probably enough right now given the options of Smoak/Montero/Romero.

  8. stevemotivateir on June 29th, 2014 1:56 pm

That is interesting, Jay. But they’d have to send Maurer or Medina down once Hart is ready, right?

  9. msfanmike on June 29th, 2014 2:13 pm

    Nice play Seager!

  10. stevemotivateir on June 29th, 2014 2:14 pm

    Smoak couldn’t make that stretch.

Well, not without another trip to the DL.

  11. msfanmike on June 29th, 2014 2:21 pm

Maurer probably has a better chance at making a positive contribution in the near term than Romero does, so why not keep him around. Just keep replacing unproductive position players with relievers.

The new market efficiency has finally revealed itself!

Is Jack unable to trade from a surplus or are other teams unwilling to deal with him/Mariner hierarchy? Any insight on that, Jay?

  12. Eastside Suds on June 29th, 2014 2:26 pm

All Jay’s fault here after asking if anyone had heard of this guy. This is ridiculous. Making this scrub look like Koufax. Let’s get the King some runs!!!

  13. stevemotivateir on June 29th, 2014 2:32 pm

The trick is to find relievers that can double as outfielders.

I look forward to seeing Maurer in left. Could he be any worse than Ibanez was?

  14. Jay Yencich on June 29th, 2014 2:35 pm

    Oh ye of little faith.

  15. Jay Yencich on June 29th, 2014 2:35 pm

    Also CAW CAW CAW

  16. stevemotivateir on June 29th, 2014 2:36 pm

They’re ruling that a hit and an error?

    Ok.

  17. Eastside Suds on June 29th, 2014 2:37 pm

I’m still wondering if Condor actually touched first base

  18. Eastside Suds on June 29th, 2014 2:37 pm

    Can-do Cano!!

  19. msfanmike on June 29th, 2014 2:38 pm

    There we go!!!

  20. Westside guy on June 29th, 2014 2:38 pm

    YEAH!!

  21. Westside guy on June 29th, 2014 2:42 pm

I’d love to see Morrison force the first base issue.

  22. Eastside Suds on June 29th, 2014 2:45 pm

I just like his confidence. He’s kind of a character, but I get a much better vibe from him than I do the mercurial Smoak. Is there a metric for “vibe”?

  23. Jay Yencich on June 29th, 2014 2:56 pm

Smoak’s performances are mercurial. Himself, I would say he’s boring in that way that a lot of players on recent Mariners teams have been boring.

  24. Eastside Suds on June 29th, 2014 3:04 pm

Yes. He certainly doesn’t show mercurial personality characteristics. I’d just like to see him get excited once in awhile so we know he cares or at least has a pulse.

  25. Jay Yencich on June 29th, 2014 3:04 pm

The date is June 29th, 2014, and despite all his advertisements, despite all his pestering, Buhner has still not succeeded in convincing Rizzs to switch to FIOS

  26. Westside guy on June 29th, 2014 3:06 pm

Smoak is coming up on 2200 plate appearances, and has generated a 93 wRC+ over 4+ seasons now (breakdown by season: 81, 103, 85, 109, 80).

Given he’s a first baseman, I’d say it’s time to end the experiment.

  27. Westside guy on June 29th, 2014 3:07 pm

I wonder if Buhner can spell FIOS.

  28. Jay Yencich on June 29th, 2014 3:50 pm

    Keeping Maurer
    Shannon Drayer ?@shannondrayer 2m
    Mariners option Romero to AAA.

  29. HighlightsAt11 on June 29th, 2014 3:57 pm

When does Hart return? And who then goes back to Tacoma, if Maurer keeps pitching well?

  30. HighlightsAt11 on June 29th, 2014 4:03 pm

With the All-star break approaching, would Mac consider letting Felix pitch the first CWS game and then the last game against Oakland series, on three days rest?

  31. HighlightsAt11 on June 29th, 2014 4:04 pm

If Felix is pitching in the All-Star game, probably not.

  32. skjes on June 29th, 2014 4:47 pm

I’m starting to think that all of those times Rizzs shot Junior aren’t an accident, either.
