Game 97, Mariners at Angels

King Felix vs. Garrett Richards, 7:05pm

Happy Felix Day!

Hisashi Iwakuma’s subtle improvements have been impressive to watch, but Felix’s have been even more surprising. It’s not like you doubt someone with Felix’s talent, but regression’s supposed to apply to everyone. Felix has been so good for so long, that you naturally wonder when he’ll start to taper off. I don’t really wonder about that any more – I just wonder what he’s going to do next. Watching Felix every five days is an absolute joy.

Garrett Richards has gone from struggling swing man, to Mike Scioscia’s doghouse, to emergency starter to near-All Star. The final all-star slot for the AL came down to Fernando Rodney and Richards, with the former getting the nod. The Angels weren’t terribly happy; now we’ll get to see how Richards responds to that slight.

Line-up:
1: Jones, CF
2: Romero, RF
3: Cano, 2B
4: Seager, 3B
5: Morrison, 1B
6: Hart, DH
7: Ackley, LF
8: Miller, SS
9: Sucre, C
SP: El Cartelua

    Go King Felix! Go M’s!

  2. Longgeorge1 on July 19th, 2014 5:56 pm

I do not expect Felix to regress in the foreseeable future, but it would not surprise me if Iwakuma just quietly outpitches the King for the rest of the season.

  3. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 6:10 pm

    Mike Trout is pretty good.

  4. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 6:12 pm

I wonder what the Angels are thinking about when the Mariners posted their line up today. Probably something along the lines of

“Hey if we can just get one run off Felix, we should win pretty easily”

  5. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 6:14 pm

Richards is already showing he is on a mission tonight. Has some piss and vinegar. Wants to show the M’s that he should have been in the AS game instead of Rodney. Could be a rough offensive night for the M’s, but what else is new?

  6. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 6:19 pm

Unless we get some offensive help soon, this little lead we have in the WC spot is going to disappear quickly.

We have at least 4 teams right on our tails and they all have better offenses than us and they are all within 2 games of our spot.

  7. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 6:23 pm

Can anyone tell me what the “injury delay” was? i only have gameday cast at the moment.

  8. camerod on July 19th, 2014 6:25 pm

I’m going with the Bizarro world prediction,
Richards gets shelled by our 2nd team(kinda) lineup!

  9. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 6:27 pm

By next midweek, our leads in the WC race will likely be gone. We can stand pat and continue with Z’s slow but steady accent, which will likely remove us from this year’s playoff race, or make a few moves and give up some possible future starters to give us a chance. Glad I am not Z.

  10. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 6:28 pm

Nice little 7 pitch inning for Richards, this is going to be an ugly night, but I hope i’m wrong.

  11. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 6:28 pm

I’m watching on Root. No injury delay that I noticed.

  12. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 6:30 pm

Yeah, we are going to struggle more than usual tonight which is really frightening.

  13. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 6:45 pm

They hardly give Felix a chance to sit down and have some gatoraid before he has to go back out there to pitch.

  14. Dennisss on July 19th, 2014 6:51 pm

Eastside, all this negativity is harshing my buzz. The Angels are a good team. Losing to them is not a disaster (and it’s still tied.)

  15. msfanmike on July 19th, 2014 6:55 pm

    Jones just got “worked”.

  16. msfanmike on July 19th, 2014 6:56 pm

    Romero just got “worked”.

  17. Westside guy on July 19th, 2014 6:56 pm

Good to see that Romero hasn’t missed a beat – he’s picked up right where he left off!

  18. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 6:57 pm

Losing to them is not a disaster, but losing right now is not a good thing in terms of what the standings are.

  19. msfanmike on July 19th, 2014 6:57 pm

    At least Cano swung.

  20. Paul B on July 19th, 2014 6:58 pm

This is a bad lineup, but it is probably the best Lloyd could do.

  21. Dennisss on July 19th, 2014 7:00 pm

Yeah, nothing says “Felix can beat you no matter what” quite like batting Romero second.

  22. Dennisss on July 19th, 2014 7:02 pm

Doesn’t really seem to matter who is batting where tonight.

  23. Dennisss on July 19th, 2014 7:05 pm

The only way to contain the Angels is to have Trout come up with no one on base.

  24. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 7:18 pm

just another easy 10 pitch inning for Richards.

  25. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 7:21 pm

I’m not a Debbie downer, just realistic. This lineup we have tonight is so offensively challenged. And, against a really good pitcher (the Angels best this year) who is trying to prove something tonight. I really thought a no-hitter was a possibility tonight. Now I’m thinking maybe a perfect game.

There, now I said it. Reverse Mojo go to work!!

  26. Paul B on July 19th, 2014 7:21 pm

Tweets going around pointing out Richards has pine tar on the bill of his cap.

  27. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 7:22 pm

    Interesting. Thanks for the info.

  28. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 7:23 pm

Beauty. Gotta love the reverse Mojo!!

  29. Westside guy on July 19th, 2014 7:23 pm

    Hey there, Ackley!

  30. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 7:24 pm

Everything I’ve learned about reverse Mojo came from Westy. He is my mentor!

  31. Paul B on July 19th, 2014 7:25 pm

Pujols plays on the line all the time, doesn’t he?

  32. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 7:26 pm

Sorry John Buck. Me loves me some Sucre!

  33. Westside guy on July 19th, 2014 7:29 pm

I have no more to teach you, my son. You have learned well.

  34. Paul B on July 19th, 2014 7:32 pm

How can his breaking ball be slipping out of his hand, with the pine tar? He just went to it when the pitching coach came out.

  35. Paul B on July 19th, 2014 7:34 pm

Sims: a sweet moment for Sucre.

  36. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 7:38 pm

anyone seen this pine tar? or is this just speculation.

  37. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 7:50 pm

Well, it is not illegal unless he is putting a foreign substance on the ball. There is no rule against using said substances to place on your fingers to get a better grip. Obviously, with how he is throwing right now, no one will complain. If the ball has a bunch of gunk on it, ala Gaylord Perry, then that is a different story.

  38. Dennisss on July 19th, 2014 7:54 pm

Hart is making the case for Montero at DH.

  39. Woodcutta on July 19th, 2014 7:54 pm

He definitely has something on the top of his bill. There is a dark spot but I don’t know enough about pine tar to know if it bleeds through or would look like that 7 innings into a game.

  40. Westside guy on July 19th, 2014 8:00 pm

I brought up “Montero as DH” over on LL a week or two ago and was told that there were considerable clubhouse-related issues with him, reported by Divish and others.

But I would prefer a jerk who is actually able to hit. Reggie Jackson didn’t make friends in the clubhouse, and even got into fist fights with his manager – but he could hit the crap out of the ball.

  41. Woodcutta on July 19th, 2014 8:05 pm

    WTH was THAT!

  42. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 8:06 pm

wow felix forgets how to throw stRikes.

  43. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 8:07 pm

    nice Rad Miller!

  44. bookbook on July 19th, 2014 8:08 pm

the Jerk who probably can’t hit is the guy who doesn’t get called up.

  45. msfanmike on July 19th, 2014 8:08 pm

    Miller, wow.

  46. Dennisss on July 19th, 2014 8:09 pm

Making the case for picking up Zobrist then.

Montero can’t field, can’t run, strikes out a lot. Power is his only thing. He doesn;t have the luxury of being a jerk. Reggie did – he was a boyhood hero.

  47. Dennisss on July 19th, 2014 8:15 pm

Man, that could have been much worse.

  48. Westside guy on July 19th, 2014 8:21 pm

Zobrist would be fine by me. But the Hart experiment needs to end.

  49. Westside guy on July 19th, 2014 8:22 pm

Nice throw to nail Jones. Not sure I like him trying for two though.

  50. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 8:23 pm

Zobrist would be fine by me… but what about our other holes? I dunno if 1 Zobrist really pushes us forward enough to take the wild card spot the way the rest of the team is.

  51. Dennisss on July 19th, 2014 8:27 pm

The Mariners are going to have holes. Their hope is to get enough offense to let their pitching carry them.

You know, so that when Felix only gives up one run to one of the best offenses in baseball, they actually win. Or when Iwakuma only gives up two runs…

  52. msfanmike on July 19th, 2014 8:29 pm

Nice throw LoMo! That was a tough play to make.

  53. Dennisss on July 19th, 2014 8:43 pm

Another 16 innings would be bad.

  54. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 8:43 pm

By throwing Street out there in the ninth, I’m taking this as kind of an insult, like the Angels think they are going to walk off on us in the bottom of the ninth.

  55. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 8:46 pm

We were 1 Miller error away from a Rodney experience, that’s the most frustrating thing about this game tonight.

  56. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 8:53 pm

at least this will end early

  57. msfanmike on July 19th, 2014 8:54 pm

Well, there was a play that should have been made by Miller.

A probable out turned double. How many shortstops don’t make that catch?

  58. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 9:04 pm

    GO AWAY HART!!!!!!

  59. Dennisss on July 19th, 2014 9:08 pm

Apparently not being a jerk is enough for Hart to keep his job. didn’t help Buck though.

  60. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 9:14 pm

    Waving the white flag.

  61. WTF_Ms on July 19th, 2014 9:26 pm

As soon as we find a decent DH, we’ll be a bit more solid. Right now, it’s a nail biter every night.

  62. juneau_fan on July 19th, 2014 9:27 pm

    Who pitches next?

  63. WTF_Ms on July 19th, 2014 9:32 pm

Beimel(sp?) wasn’t in the game last night was he?

  64. WTF_Ms on July 19th, 2014 9:34 pm

Why is it every time Miller gets hit to, it seems like he’s struggling to get the throw accurately to 1st? Seems like he has an odd throwing motion.

  65. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 9:34 pm

    We need this win badly.

  66. juneau_fan on July 19th, 2014 9:34 pm

Hasn’t he already pitched? Or are these games just blurring together?

  67. WTF_Ms on July 19th, 2014 9:38 pm

I guess so…I must have given up a bit when he and Medina went.

  68. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 9:39 pm

Sucre is good. As we already knew.

  69. Dennisss on July 19th, 2014 9:40 pm

I’m starting to become a Sucre fan. Pretty throw.

  70. msfanmike on July 19th, 2014 9:41 pm

He sure does a nice job – blocks everything – gets out of the chute quickly – good footwork – great arm.

His bat is feeble, but he can throw the leather.

  71. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 9:42 pm

So….27 innings in 27 hours and only 3 runs scored. Look for something to happen this week on the trade front. Or not.

  72. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 9:43 pm

Sucre will be in this league for a long time and make a few million just because he can control a game with his defense. If he hits, he will become a multi millionaire.

  73. G-Man on July 19th, 2014 9:46 pm

    LoMo!

  74. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 9:46 pm

    What is happening!!

  75. Westside guy on July 19th, 2014 9:47 pm

    Wow!

  76. msfanmike on July 19th, 2014 9:50 pm

    Sweet … Come on Ackley!

  77. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 9:50 pm

We need a couple more runs! Let’s go boys!

  78. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 9:52 pm

Man he sucks. Most of the time.

  79. msfanmike on July 19th, 2014 9:52 pm

    Dammit

  80. juneau_fan on July 19th, 2014 9:53 pm

Now who pitches? The Bartender? Mauer?

  81. G-Man on July 19th, 2014 9:53 pm

Oh heck, I was hoping they’d try a suicide.

  82. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 9:53 pm

That was the proper move. Let’s go Justin.

  83. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 9:54 pm

    Bartender shut down tonight.

  84. G-Man on July 19th, 2014 9:54 pm

Mauer was used. Maybe Leone again, maybe Bartender.

  85. msfanmike on July 19th, 2014 9:54 pm

Good call to have a pinch hitter, here. That’s the good news.

Need another damn run. Warning track power time, Justin.

  86. Longgeorge1 on July 19th, 2014 9:56 pm

We could very well be 1-1 against the hottest team in baseball, in their park and all I hear is bitching. I don’t know “stats” but this is great MEANINGFUL baseball. Can’t we just have fun. OH NO NOT SMOAK Oh well

  87. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 9:56 pm

    Furbush backs up Leone.

  88. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 9:57 pm

Better to be lucky than good any day. We will take it!!

  89. Grayfox3d on July 19th, 2014 9:57 pm

lol, bout time that happens to someone else.

  90. msfanmike on July 19th, 2014 9:57 pm

    Now I’m bitching.

  102. Westside guy on July 19th, 2014 10:04 pm

Has anyone heard anything about Saunders at all? I know we’re still inside the 15 day window, but initial reports were it might be somewhat longer than that.

  103. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 10:05 pm

I miss Charlie as well Mike! LOL

  104. Longgeorge1 on July 19th, 2014 10:05 pm

  109. dougman on July 19th, 2014 10:07 pm

  120. Longgeorge1 on July 19th, 2014 10:14 pm

I think Lloyd told Charlie if he gets the save he gets to shoot the arrow. Now he is doing his Rodney imitation

  121. Eastside Suds on July 19th, 2014 10:15 pm

BIG win for the M’s against the hottest team in baseball. Well done!!

  122. msfanmike on July 19th, 2014 10:15 pm

Yay! we did it!!!! Nice job guys, sloppy at times, no one can hit, but we pulled one out! thank god.

  128. Dennisss on July 19th, 2014 10:25 pm

Those were a couple of intense games. Great win!

  129. Westside guy on July 19th, 2014 10:33 pm

A nine inning game would be nice, guys – I’m just sayin’.

  130. Sowulo on July 20th, 2014 5:59 am

If the M’s lose on Sunday they will have gone 3-3 against the top two teams in all of baseball. If they win they will have won back to back series against them–one against the hottest team in baseball in their own yard. There is a lot to feel good about right now.
