Mariners Player As A Volcano

Volcano
South Sister

The South Sister rises prominently within a crowded volcanic field, and it’s known to be relatively young. A few years ago, there were signs of unrest, as geoscientists detected uplift just west of the peak. It was unknown whether the area might be on the verge of a destructive eruption. However, the rate of uplift has since slowed down, such that now it’s hardly noticeable. Though the area is closely monitored, there exists no present threat of activity.

    Pretty much yeah.

So would Raul qualify as Mount St. Helens? Gigantic eruption, followed by a huge crater?

  3. GhostofMarinersPast on August 13th, 2013 2:59 pm

And that would make Wilhelmsen Pompeii. Had a horrific eruption, killing everyone in range

HAHAHA good one Ghost! That gave me a good laugh and helped me prepare for another Mariners game.

Many players have defected from Cuba and signed with a MLB team the past couple of years. Why aren’t the Mariners ever involved in any of those signings? Is it because Betancourt experience didn’t quite work as planned?

You gotta admit, though, it is a very good-looking mountain.

Re: Cuban ballplayers, I’ve always figured that those guys are much more familiar with the teams in the East and South, and so it takes a much more compelling (read: above market value) offer to induce them to come to a town three thousand miles away and without either a strong Cuban community or a recent tradition of winning.

Last 40 plate appearances, .282/.300/.385. It says alot about Ackley that I’m thrilled with those numbers.

    Shots fired!

Was just at Shasta and Lassen over the weekend. Beautiful.

I have a picture of myself on top of South Sister, I’d trade it for a picture of me standing on top of Ackley.

High chopper to 1B and they don’t send Ackley in from 3B? Or, he just didn’t get the read and go, himself?

    COME ON!!!

Nice game with the bat so far, but COME ON!!!

  12. jordan on August 13th, 2013 6:54 pm

Of course he gets 3 base knocks the same day this is posted.

Ackley has improved his contact and power noticeably since his return from Tacoma. He is showing the ability to drive the ball to the opposite field consistently, which wil keep him in the line up. He is well over .300 since the All Star break. Retry good for the 8 spot!

What percentage of the actual attendance at the Trop tonight was “friends of Brad Miller”?

  15. Westside guy on August 13th, 2013 7:43 pm

Ackley’s second half ISO of .093 isn’t really flashing much power – it just means he’s no longer hitting for less power than Brendan Ryan. 🙂

Looks like 2% Bread. That had to be a blast for him and his posse!

  17. Eastside Suds on August 13th, 2013 8:09 pm

Not a bad slash line for the kid post-ASB hitting in the 8 spot. He’s listening to someone and beginning to adjust as he should if he wants to be successful at this level. Almost doubled his ISOP from the first half which isn’t saying much!!!

    .300/.335/.394

Ackley is starting to get the look in his eyes I remember when he first came up. Which is to say he doesn’t look like a deer staring into headlights.

Re: Cuban ball players: see puig, cespedes, chapman..or
    LA, Oakland?!, Cincinnati?!!

Not exactly east or south.. Not to mention none of those teams were very good before they signed a Cuban player.

Hint: maybe jack Z should think about trying it.. Only problem is the new guy is 1B/DH. Oh wait! Perfect fit!

  20. SeattleSlew on August 14th, 2013 9:43 am

I wasn’t thinking the M’s should sign Jose Abreu but if they had an OF like Cespedes or Puig in the middle of the lineup it could have a huge impact on the team.

  21. SeattleSlew on August 14th, 2013 9:46 am

Maybe Ackley read this post and decided he doesn’t want to be the “South Sister” anymore.

  22. murphy_dog on August 14th, 2013 11:40 am

SI article a couple months ago about how much time the A’s spent watching Cespedes; going to every game they could, asking about him, etc. Lot of time and energy to invest in someone who may never be able to play in the US.

  23. Eastside Suds on August 14th, 2013 12:19 pm

It obviously paid off. Forward thinking Mr. Beane at his best. It’s why the small market A’s are almost always competitive.

  24. Eastside Suds on August 14th, 2013 1:01 pm

Amended slash line for Ackley since the break. 16 games.
    .328 .355 .448 .803
More like Alaska’s Redoubt. Steady rumbling with moments of belching steam and ash.

The old nickname for South Sister, was Mt. Charity.

Ponder the irony of where, in 2011, Ackley was hitting above .300 on the road. He has been absolutely flat-line, at around .230 at home, for the past three years. With the additional irony of his road ERA plummeting quickly, last year, to join the home ERA).

Flat line. At home. Where Charity ought to begin?

Personally, I think pitchers just figured him out by the end of 2011, and he’s now where he is…

But, hey… South Sister’s nearest neighbors are called Faith and Hope.
