so, I keep hearing that Todd Helton has ‘football mentality’ … what would ‘baseball mentality’ be, and would you ever tell a football player he had it?

I’m not sure how many more times I can stand hearing about how sparkling Asdrubal is, and how valuable he is to the Indians.
Years ago, three or more, I asked Dave if there was a defensive wizard at SS in the Minors. He answered “Cabrera”, although he was light hitting.
Then came Yuni and Lopez. Cabrera appeared to be expendable. Even then I don’t believe we got like talent in return. It is certainly proving to be true.
And Dave was correct many years ago the kid is a defensive wizard.
Is there a switch to 2B in Yuni’s future?

That was a sweet play.
While I generally dismiss all misscalls as a “falls both ways” luck thing, but that call at second was purely the result of seeing the ball beat the runner and not properly focussing on the play. The game should be tied.
~340 games between the two teams and its a one run game in the 5th inning to get to the World Series. Always amazing how thinly the razor slices.
listening to Buck pimp the Fox lineup– have I just missed the obligatory Fox Celebrity(s) in the stands, or are they saving that treat for the WS?

I love baseball. I love the rookie Pedroia going deep over the green monster, but more than that, I love it that the next half inning starts with a leadoff bunt hit. As soon as Pedroia hits it deep, I’m saying “Oh, man, that’s trouble.” And as soon as Sizemore lays down the bunt, I’m immediately saying, “Ohthatwasgood-he’sgonnamakeit-he’sthere, YES!” It’s not like the effect on the game is any different from a line drive to right, but successful bunt-to-hit attempts are exciting. I hate FOX, but there ad campaign is right. There’s only ONE October.

McCarver gave a mini-lecture on how when a pitcher throws 97, the only way to pull the ball if it’s down in the strike zone, and if it’s up, you have to go to center, and at the shoulders, you– I guess your head explodes or something. It made absolutely no sense at all, contradicted itself, and made me want to cry.

Unfortunately, its going to be a sox-rox world series. I was starting to really like the tribe too. I wonder how the fox execs were able to pull off this comeback.
I can only imagine how much better te performaces of Pedroia, Ellsbury, and Okajima would have been tonight if they were veterans.
I wanted the sox to win, but now i feel bad for the indians.

I have to say, as much as I was hoping the Indians would get there — the way the Sox have been playing, they look like they’re going to destroy the Rockies.
Ellsbury needs to work on his play by the wall in left field;last night he missed a sure catch by erantlly thinking he was closer to it than he actually was.
The Rockies have only won 21 of their last 22;Sox will sweep.
I just don’t see that as predictive: the Red Sox played much better all season in a tougher division in a tougher league.
I love the fact that the Sox have three credible ROY contenders and the question to Varitek is whether the veteran leadership is what got them there.
How can McCarver still have a job? It’s not like this is even his tenth season of being stupid.
Ellsbury is going to fun to watch for a long time. It’s hard to get out of of Madras, but he sure as hell did it with style.
Much as I want the Sox to win the Series, remember games 2-4 in this series. Who knows which team will show up in the World Series. Of course, I gave up on them tonight when they were up 3-2. A few more games like this, I might have to become an optimist.
I realize it’s not a big part of the event for him, but I think it’s too bad (or maybe it felt good) that Ellsbury had to be on the field with that horrible caricature on Cleveland’s unis.
Of course, I also think it’s too bad spectators have to look at the stupid pair of socks in the Boston infield.

This series was something of a coming out party for Asdrubal Cabrera. That guy is only 21.
Fortunately, the Mariners have no need for young talent like him, what with their proven veterans and all.
McCarver is there to remind us that there’s still worse than Brent Musberger out there.
Interesting that the Bosox grounded into 16 DPs, an all-time record for any playoff series, and yet still managed to win.
This Red Sox team feels like the Bash Brothers era A’s. Two huge bats, deep pitching, and lots of youth.
I want to say that the Rockies feel like the ’90 Reds, but that’s a little too hopeful.

With snow in Denver today, the question may be, how many days will it take to get a winner? I’m just hoping they don’t play on Halloween, since I can’t get out of trick or treating.
Boston doesn’t have rookies. Pedroia’s scrappy and plays the game the right way. Okajima’s already a crafty veteran. Matsuzaka threw 1000 innings at the age of 5. Ellsbury…doesn’t count. He plays like a veteran, he’s the rare rookie who forgets he’s a rookie- but he’s yet to really accumulate enough experience earn regular playing time- Crisp’s veteran presence must be helping him.
40: One thing that might be encouraging to remember about those “Bash Bros.” A’s teams of the late ’80’s is that they crashed two out of three years in the WS (and got lucky the other year due to the quake).

With how badly the M’s management probably wants to get rid of Jose Lopez… kind of makes you wish we had a young guy like that Asdrubal Cabrera to stick into that slot for ’08. Ah well, you can’t have everything…
I was at the game last night and sat next to an Indians fan who works for Baseball Info Solutions. We both agree that Rafael Perez was a huge problem. He didn’t pitch. He’d been used in the previous game, a rout, but had pitched poorly against the Sox. It left the Indians with just Bettancourt for relievers that Wedge really trusted. As sketchy as the Sox bullpen was, at times, they had 2 guys, Okajima and Papelbon, who seemed trustworthy.
Fantastic loud crowd, especially the first 2 innings and from the 6th inning on. A couple times I could shout as loud as I wanted and barely hear my own voice.
About 15 minutes after the game was over, Wedge apparently went over to the Sox clubhouse to congratulate Francona. All 38,000 fans were still there and when Wedge emerged from the Sox dugout to go across the field to the Indians dugout (and clubhouse) everyone in the area close to the infield gave him a strong round of applause. He tipped his cap.
I was very happy that Daisuke Matsuzaka had a good outing. He’s pitched in horrendous luck this year, at times.
