Sooo, hidden here under the fold… it feels really weird to write this up, because most of my USSM posts have been watched and sometimes assisted by Maddie, the Haus Zumsteg cat (seen there looking at the 2006 site), who liked to hang out for Mariner games, and she died Friday of heart problems she started to have during the heat wave. USSM Labs is too quiet and empty today.

Oh, please Miggy, don’t Mesa this up…
Uhm, is DA hurt? Or has he pitched too much? I’m confuzzed.
Tonight is like an alternate reality where Batista was made the closer instead of Aardsma.
You show us, Batista!
Come on!
Yeah, we’re haters! Show us what shit we are!
’cause we really want to win this game. Shame us. Please.
Are we trying to make sure Batista is dead-armed for his next contract? There has to be a reason they keep running him out there.
I’m trying to figure that one out, too.
Apparently Mariano Rivera flew cross country to pitch in a Miguel Batista mask.
The game’s over?
I know I haven’t been paying attention, but boy that was quick.
Wakamatsu doing his best Hargrove/McLaren impression.
Oh dear, I’m drinking too much again. The game started an hour early.
And Batista, looking like the Second Coming of Lee Smith, proved us all wrong tonight!
Batista was pitching. You should be drinking.
Good one! 🙂
Aardsma pitched last night, he needs to be available tomorrow. There was no way he was going to pitch tonight, with Felix trying to lock up a Cy Young award when a “W” could pay some good divdends in that quest.
I paid my share of the season ticket seats I have for tomorrow. Please, I don’t want to see Griffy in center; just great DL ABs. And please no Batista throwing “flame”. And please minimize any gush moments — nothing ’95.
I want to see Felix pitch, Beltre field, Guti shine, and…Ichiro!
I want to see the Mariners continue to be winners.
I really can’t believe my eyes. That’s the old Miguel Bautista on the mound tonight. That was a final hurrah if I ever saw one. I wonder how he feels right now.
Wooo Hoooo Phightin Phils!!!! That almost made me shed a tear.
Batista. No ‘u’.
What is this about Jr in center? Did someone actually mention it, or is it just wishful/fearful thinking?
Derek,
I am truly sorry for your loss. Friends like Maddie are the hardest to lose.
May her memmory live long and strong for you and Mrs. Zumsteg.
*memory*
Damned edit button is still missing.
Congrats to Batista for having a good outing. Finally.
Goodbye Miguel! For your off-the-field community work, a sincere “thank you!” And for your on-the-field work, a less sincere “thanks!” for…umm, trying?
Back from freezing Safeco. We were in about the same seats we had the USSM/LL event in, only the weather could not have been more different (thought the pre-game “forecast” told us that it would be wet when there wasn’t a cloud in the sky\; great job, guys!).
With any other centerfielder, the M’s lose this game. Those two plays Gut made, one at a full run ending up almost on second base and the other at a dead run to the gap, absolutely saved this game. Seeing what is almost undoubtedly the last Griffey homer I’ll ever see in person was nice, but looking to a long future with Franklin in center makes me feel far better.
Shannon Drayer had a story on the postgame— and she turned the mike over to Chef Jeremy, who has been with the team since the Kingdome days, and has been a big Mariners fan for much longer than that.
According to Jeremy, he has been trying to get a Griffey HR ball for ever … at the Dome, at the Safe … he told Griffey that, and said he was going to keep trying this year, so during games he has taken to sitting out with the grounds crew.
Just before the HR tonight, the crew all left, and he was sitting out there by himself, when Jr hit the ball. He says he ran along the wall, got the ball, ignored all the fans above trying to get him to throw them the ball, and just took off running … he was even chased by security for part of the run, until they realized it was just Chef J. He ran all the way to the clubhouse, found Jr in the video room with Carl and said “got itâ€.
Junior didn’t believe it was number 630, but Jeremy said, why would I run all this way? and then handed him the ball.
Didn’t the Mariners remove Rowland-Smith from their 40-man roster earlier this year, and re-sign him when they noticed that he was still available ?
Derek,
I’m very sorry for your loss 🙁
He’s been on the DL, and was then optioned to Tacoma, but AFAIK he’s never left the 40 man this year.
My condolences to the Zumsteg household.
I’m not a huge pet person, but I’ve always enjoyed the company of cats. I had a great one when I was growing up. They’re not too needy and pet-like – they just like to hang out. I think that makes it even worse when they depart.
Condolences, Derek.
Condolences DMZ. My two cats and I mourn your loss.
