Game 153, Mariners at Astros

Taijuan Walker vs. Brad Peacock, 5:10pm
Wildcard odds – Fangraphs.com: 34.2% Baseballprospectus.com: 33.7%

The development of Taijuan Walker’s split-change has certainly helped him boost his GB%, but it hasn’t turned him into an ace just yet. He’s struggled at times this year with wildness, with HRs, and, of course, with injury. But I think Paxton’s emergence (and all the time Walker missed, of course) have led people to overlook the top prospect. I’m not saying Walker’s going to be as good as Paxton’s been, but we haven’t seen what Walker can be just yet. His cutter’s intriguing at times, but his command of it hasn’t quite been there thus far, though his control woes of July seem to have subsided.

Brad Peacock…everything I said about him a few weeks ago remains true.

Line-up:

1: Jackson, CF
2: Ackley, LF
3: Cano, 2B
4: Seager, 3B
5: Morales, DH
6: Morrison, 1B
7: Saunders, RF
8: Zunino, C
9: Miller, SS
SP: Taijuan Walker

That’s the lead-off hit Ms fans have been waiting for.

  2. Jake on September 19th, 2014 5:29 pm

The lead-off hit M’s fans have been waiting for, and the subsequent double play that we’re all expecting.

  3. Longgeorge1 on September 19th, 2014 5:45 pm

Tried to input last night but was without internet for a time. I wonder if Saunders sitting last night was his health as much as Lioyds “ignorance”.

  4. Jake on September 19th, 2014 5:59 pm

    WOOO DUSTY

  5. zzyzx on September 19th, 2014 6:01 pm

Looking at the pitching rotation, Felix is scheduled to pitch the final game of the season. Here’s hoping we’ve clinched so we don’t need him that day.

  6. ivan on September 19th, 2014 6:02 pm

Terrific piece of hitting by Ackley on that HR. He had to supply most of the power and judge the break, but he hit it out with a nice smooth swing. Well done.

  7. Jake on September 19th, 2014 6:12 pm

Not making any friends here, Taijuan.

  8. ivan on September 19th, 2014 6:13 pm

He hasn’t gone inside on the hitters at all. He needs to back them off the plate. This is Houston. He needs to go all J.R. Richard on them.

  9. Jake on September 19th, 2014 6:18 pm

Great recovery, Taijuan. We can be friends again.

  10. Jake on September 19th, 2014 6:27 pm

    YAY Zunino!

  11. ivan on September 19th, 2014 6:27 pm

Holy sh!t. I would have been happy if Mike had got a good bunt down!

  12. djw on September 19th, 2014 6:28 pm

Thanks for being bad at bunting, Zunino.

  13. Sowulo on September 19th, 2014 6:29 pm

Big turn around–Houston with bases loaded and no outs and get nothing. Seattle comes right back with a bomb after two errors.

I also think that squaring around once in awhile helps the hitter see the ball better. Sure seemed to work for Zunino.

  14. HighlightsAt11 on September 19th, 2014 6:32 pm

Astros pay for their sins…err, errors.

  15. djw on September 19th, 2014 6:33 pm

    safe

  16. HighlightsAt11 on September 19th, 2014 6:35 pm

I’m not watching the scoreboard. Sorry that’s a lie. Tigers up 5-0 on Royals, top of the 5th.

  17. HighlightsAt11 on September 19th, 2014 6:44 pm

OK, good show. Give TWalk the win. Now its time to save some runs for tomorrow.

  18. HighlightsAt11 on September 19th, 2014 6:51 pm

Tigers now up 7-0 in the fifth. So if things stand Ms will be 1/2 game behind the Royals.

And depending on what the As do against the Phils tonight, the M’s could be tied with the A’s or a game behind. Prefer the former.

  19. Woodcutta on September 19th, 2014 6:51 pm

Did Dave Sims really just say he doesn’t know why “the Stars Wars phenomenon” is coming back?

  20. HighlightsAt11 on September 19th, 2014 6:52 pm

    I didn’t know it left.

  21. ivan on September 19th, 2014 6:53 pm

Haha, tonight they’re playing Earl Ball.

  22. HighlightsAt11 on September 19th, 2014 6:54 pm

Detroit is having as much fun tonight as the Mariners are. Tigers now up 10-0, still in the fifth.

  23. msfanmike on September 19th, 2014 6:59 pm

Sims like not wars star phenomena?

I’m 50 … and saw it all happen in living color … And yeah – did it ever leave? It should have died – but kill not what doesn’t you stronger makes you just only.

And no, I’m not really a fan. The first prequel put me to sleep with total green screen crap.

  24. msfanmike on September 19th, 2014 7:02 pm

Yoda is pretty cool, though. Gotta give it up for Yoda.

  25. HighlightsAt11 on September 19th, 2014 7:06 pm

    Indeed, Yoda is the man.

  26. JMB on September 19th, 2014 7:07 pm

Late to the party tonight — I actually like the 10pm ET starts, as it means the rest of the family is asleep and I’m a nightowl — but WOO offense!

  27. djw on September 19th, 2014 7:18 pm

    A’s up 3-0 dammit.

What happens if the A’s, Royals, and M’s tie for the two spots?

  28. JMB on September 19th, 2014 7:23 pm

    C’mon, Phills.

  29. JMB on September 19th, 2014 7:27 pm

He didn’t want to come out. It’s all good Taijuan. Great effort.

  30. msfanmike on September 19th, 2014 7:28 pm

There are apparently scenarios/solutions already thought out and in place in the event of 3 and 4 way ties. I can’t even hope to recite them, but there is a plan in place. Someone had a rundown of it within one of their posts at LL.

  31. JMB on September 19th, 2014 7:43 pm

Phillies on the board! 3-1 Oakland.

  32. HighlightsAt11 on September 19th, 2014 7:50 pm

Maurer was looking good when he came back up and joined the bullpen. Then his bottom fell out, literally.

But he gets the job done in the 7th.

  33. bookbook on September 19th, 2014 7:55 pm

No one looks good with no butt. Literally.

  34. msfanmike on September 19th, 2014 8:00 pm

“The Ackley” is locked in pretty well tonight. He had been struggling prior and subsequent to the injury – this month, but it didn’t feel like it was going to linger long. Those September numbers should even out over the next 10 games. It’s going to be a happy ending to the season if both he and Saunders are contributing.

  35. HighlightsAt11 on September 19th, 2014 8:02 pm

Why can’t the M’s play at home like this? At least against the Astros?

I’m not looking to far forward, but if the M’s make the playoffs (or a one game tie breaker), they should elect to play ALL games on the road.

  36. leon0112 on September 19th, 2014 8:05 pm

Will Seager get 100 RBIs this year? He is at 92 now. It has been a while since a Mariner drove in 100 in a season.

  37. Westside guy on September 19th, 2014 8:06 pm

I forgot this was an earlier start! Haha

Good to see them beating up on a team they should beat up on…

  38. msfanmike on September 19th, 2014 8:11 pm

Ell – Ohhhhh – Ell, Westy.

  39. Westside guy on September 19th, 2014 8:14 pm

So Saunders has walked three times… I’m not sure Lloyd is impressed with walks, but we’ll see what Lloyd’s Magic Pencil does tomorrow.

  40. msfanmike on September 19th, 2014 8:15 pm

I wish Victor Borge was still alive so he could combine his verbal punctuation skit with chat speak. Shhuuuu pppppt.

  41. msfanmike on September 19th, 2014 8:16 pm

Come to think of it, Victor Borge might just be Yoda.

  42. Westside guy on September 19th, 2014 8:16 pm

    I think he was safe.

  43. djw on September 19th, 2014 8:16 pm

Hmm. I think he’s safe, but is it clear enough to overturn?

  44. msfanmike on September 19th, 2014 8:17 pm

    Medina blows, regardless.

  45. Westside guy on September 19th, 2014 8:18 pm

    I expect djw is right.

  46. msfanmike on September 19th, 2014 8:18 pm

    Blows!!!

  47. Westside guy on September 19th, 2014 8:19 pm

Medina is the weak spot in an otherwise solid bullpen.

  48. JMB on September 19th, 2014 8:20 pm

    So…

  49. Westside guy on September 19th, 2014 8:21 pm

    Exhale…

  50. JMB on September 19th, 2014 8:23 pm

    OK.

  51. HighlightsAt11 on September 19th, 2014 8:28 pm

Can Saunders pull out another walk after going 0-2 in the count?

  52. Longgeorge1 on September 19th, 2014 8:29 pm

Was just thinking Medina won’t be on the postseason roster – LoMo wheels

  53. Longgeorge1 on September 19th, 2014 8:30 pm

    And along comes Jones!

  54. msfanmike on September 19th, 2014 8:31 pm

Pinch run for the guy who just stole a base. You don’t see that every day. No complaints here, it’s just kinda wonky.

    And … jones!

  55. Longgeorge1 on September 19th, 2014 8:31 pm

    There goes Jones!

  56. msfanmike on September 19th, 2014 8:32 pm

Need a fly ball. Hit a fly ball. Do not K

  57. msfanmike on September 19th, 2014 8:32 pm

    And, that.

  58. Westside guy on September 19th, 2014 8:33 pm

    Lloyd loves him some managing.

  59. JMB on September 19th, 2014 8:33 pm

Best M’s stolen base seasons? Jones is up there.

  60. msfanmike on September 19th, 2014 8:33 pm

    Okay, thanks Houston.

  61. Longgeorge1 on September 19th, 2014 8:34 pm

    Speed Kills!

  62. Westside guy on September 19th, 2014 8:34 pm

There’s the Zunino we’ve come to know and love.

    But Jones scores regardless!

  63. JMB on September 19th, 2014 8:35 pm

    Mike Cameron, 34 of 39 in 2001.
    Ichiro, 45 of 47 in 2006.

  64. JMB on September 19th, 2014 8:38 pm

Yes, he does love to manage. Let’s play matchups with a 5-run lead!

  65. Westside guy on September 19th, 2014 8:39 pm

Hahahahha! Sims thought he was off mic!

  66. Jake on September 19th, 2014 8:40 pm

    Missed it, what’d Sims say?

  67. Westside guy on September 19th, 2014 8:41 pm

(About Beimel I think) “I would’ve just left him in. If he hits 100, who gives a shit?”

It may have not been on ROOT, but it was on MLB.tv!

  68. Jake on September 19th, 2014 8:42 pm

    HAhahhaha!

  69. JMB on September 19th, 2014 8:43 pm

    oh for the love of…

I think he takes this “best bullpen!” “deep bullpen!” thing just a bit too far sometimes…

  70. Jake on September 19th, 2014 8:45 pm

    “Ackley has great speed”
    “Smoak plays gold glove defense”

  71. Westside guy on September 19th, 2014 8:46 pm

    Woo hoo!

  72. leon0112 on September 19th, 2014 9:09 pm

According to ESPN, the Ms magic number is 11. It looks like their magic number will go under 10 this season for the first time in a while.

  73. Westside guy on September 19th, 2014 9:17 pm

Wow, the Mariners actually have a magic number! ;-)

  74. HighlightsAt11 on September 19th, 2014 9:38 pm

Do the Royals have a makeup game to play?

  75. MrZDevotee on September 19th, 2014 9:45 pm

Highlights… They have to finish a game that was suspended… I believe it’s scheduled for Monday… And they’re down 2 runs in the 10th inning, with their 7-8-9 hitters due up… Their “win probability” is 7% for that game.

Unless they pull that out, we’re essentially tied with them at the moment.

  76. MrZDevotee on September 19th, 2014 10:43 pm

We’re the last team in the league to finally give up 500 runs on the season… 501 runs thru 153 games… That’s 3.27 runs per game.

Such a crazy good number. Barely 3 runs a game for our entire pitching staff. For an entire season (nearly).

    Wow.

  77. LongDistance on September 19th, 2014 11:54 pm

Really? I’m going to be rooting for Detroit for the next few days???

Where am I? Who am I?

    Go M’s!

  78. Jake on September 20th, 2014 1:25 pm

Joe Nathan’s about ready to blow a 1 run lead for Detroit. He got the first out, and just allowed two singles.

  79. Jake on September 20th, 2014 1:34 pm

Ibanez makes the last out! Royals lose again!

  80. Jake on September 20th, 2014 3:14 pm

Philly just took a 2-0 lead on Oakland in the 7th.

  81. bixthecat on September 20th, 2014 3:31 pm

Let’s go Phillies. Nothing like a playoff race.

  82. eddieranch on September 20th, 2014 3:51 pm

3-0 Philly. Looks like it could be a good night for the Ms.
